The Galloway Hills Rally - 1st December 200

The first round of the inaugural Peugeot 206 Winter Cup got away to a cracking start with fourteen starters, of whom no fewer than eight were competing in Peugeot 206’s for the first time.

The 45 stage mile event started from the hospitable town of Castle Douglas in South West Scotland under brightening skies, although heavy overnight rain had made the stages very slippery indeed.

MURPHY TESTS WORLD RALLY CAR

The inaugural Ford Ireland Focus Rally Championship, Colm Murphy from Athea, Co. Limerick has tested a World Rally Car Ford Focus at M-Sport in Cumbria.

This official test was part of the overall prize fund for winning the 2002 Ford Ireland Focus Rally Championship. The car utilised was Carlo Sainz's Ford Focus World Rally Car from the final round of the World Rally Championship, Rally GB, which Carlos drove to third position overall.

Irish Motorsport honoured its top performers of 2002 at a celebration lunch held in Dublin earlier today Monday 2nd December 2002. The "Awards for Excellence in Irish Motorsport" event which brought together the leading performers from all disciplines of Irish Motorsport was created by the sport's governing body Motorsport Ireland and sponsored by Alfa Romeo.


Gallagher wins 2002 Billy Coleman Award

Shaun Gallagher has won the 2002 Billy Coleman Award. The award, named after one of Ireland's most successful rally drivers, is presented by Motorsport Ireland to the best up and coming driver. This award tops off an outstanding year for the young Letterkenny man, a year that saw him move to the forefront of motorsport both at home and abroad.

IRISH MOTORSPORT AND VOLUNTARY WORK OVERSEAS BENEFIT FROM FIRST FISHER FOUNDATION AWARDS

Seven Irish Motorsporting Organisations will receive grants to improve motorsporting safety to the tune of £10,500 as a result of the first bi-annual distribution of funds from The Fisher Foundation and a further £7,500 is being allocated to send Garry Jennings on a winter rallying safety training scheme in Norway.

Date Set for Motorsport's "Awards for Excellence"

The third annual Alfa Romeo / Motorsport Ireland "Awards for Excellence" in Irish motorsport will be presented in the Conrad Hotel, Dublin on Monday 2nd December this year. These Awards have been created to recognise the achievements of drivers across the spectrum of Irish Motorsport both at home and abroad.

The centrepiece of this year's event will be the presentation of awards to the "Young Racing Driver of the Year" and the "Young Rally Driver of the Year". Each award will also carry with it a package worth E32,000 to the winning driver.

Killarney driver Johnny O Sullivan scored his fourth outright victory on last Sundays Kingdom Fast Fit/Yokohama Tyres single stage rally. Driving his Ford Escort World Rally Car he was fastest on the days three stages to finish seventeen seconds in front of Shanagoldens Ed Synan in a Manta. Another Killarney driver Donie Sullivan who was twelve seconds in arrears to Synan secured third overall.


Micra Duo Look For Sponsorship

Nissan Micra rallying duo, Colin Britton and Kenny Hull, are looking for new sponsors to be able to continue their successful rally campaign. Consistent drives throughout the 2002 season saw the pair earn a well deserved third position in class three of the M.E. Crowe Northern Ireland Rally Championship. Now the time has come to look further afield and, if enough sponsorship can be found, next year Colin and Kenny hope to compete in either the Peugeot 206 Super Cup or class one of the N. I. Championship.

Double For Dessie!

After an eventful day at the Galway West International Rally, the final round of the Toshiba Championship, it was celebrations all round as Dessie Keenan with navigator Enda Sherry brought the 106 home to take first place in his class in the Toshiba Irish National Championship and for Dessie to win the ‘Peugeot 106 Bonus Scheme’ sponsored by Peugeot Sport UK. Dessie was also named as one of the finalist for the 2002 Billy Coleman Award earlier in the week.
