Motorsport Ireland’s Junior Rally Series is returning after a break due to the coronavirus pandemic. After a very successful 2019, plans were in place for a bigger championship in 2020 which would cater for more classes and give more competitors a chance to develop their motorsport future.
Speaking ahead of the 2022 series, Co-Ordinator John Quill outlined some of the main points
“This dual surface series is again aimed at Junior drivers using J1000 cars (Class 21), J1600 cars (Class 16) and JR2/ Rally4 cars (Class 2) (running in their respective classes within each event). 2020 was set to be a big year driving the championship forward but COVID abruptly applied the brakes, so attention now turns to this year and already interest has been fantastic, the recent influx of J1000’s at events and the acquisition of R2/ Rally4 cars looks set to rise entries considerably and it is shaping up to be a big year for competitors. We have a fantastic prize fund on offer to the successful drivers, with training, coaching and support to the value of a massive €45000 on offer through the Team Ireland Foundation as a result of support from John Coyne. Added to this a Billy Coleman Award nomination for the J1600 R2/Rally4 winning driver, It’s all designed to help young driver’s progress in the sport.”
The 2022 series will be run on selected rounds on a rotation basis from both the National Tarmac and Forest Rally Championships for J1600 and JR2/ Rally4, the best performance in 5 out of 8 events will count, using two best Gravel results, two best Tar results and the best other result will be counted. The series age limit for 2022 is Class 16 Under 25 and R2/Rally4 Under 25.
For J1000, the best performance in 4 out of 6 events will count, using three best Gravel results and one best Tar result. The J1000 tarmac rounds will consist of tarmac Rallysprint events. The series age for J1000 is the driver must be over 14 and under 19 years of age at the date of first event.
