This weekends 2nd Round of the 2022 Motorsport Ireland Forest Rally Championship see’s a quality field of crews ready to take on six high-speed Gravel Stages laid on by Carrick-on-Suir Motor Club with the Willie Loughman Forestry Rally.
The day kicks off with a short and snappy burst over the 4.2KM opening stage of the event, followed by two longer stages running very close to each other with an incredibly short distance from Stage 2 to Stage 3. Following service in the Mill River Business Park, Carrick-on-Suir, the crews will head out and complete the three stages again.
The field will be led away by the Skoda Fabia R5 of Patrick & Stephen O’Brien, while the Ford Fiesta R5 pairing of Jordan & Paul Hone as well as Niall McCullagh & Ryan McCloskey follow next on the road. Jordan Hone is the highest placed Championship contender on the entry, as he sits 3rd in the Standings after Round 1.
The rest of the top five 4WD crews includes Gerard Lucey & Donagh Crowley in their Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 8 as well as Conor McCourt & Caolan McKenna in a Skoda Fabia R5. A total of 19 all- wheel-drive crews will tackle the event.
The 2WD section of the Carrick-on-Suir based event is chock full of some of the fastest Forest Rallying regulars in Ireland, with the leading five crews taking to the stages in Class 14 spec Ford Escort MK2’s. Mickey Conlon & Ernie McPhillips lead the field, but David Condell & Paul Kelly will be hot on their heels from the start.
John Gordon & Ben Taggart lead the points standings in the 2WD section of the Championship and are seeded third, while Steven Corey & Ella Ryan as well as Thomas Gray & Harry Marchbank round out the top five seeded crews.
Another battle sure to be one exciting to watch will the battle for leading front-wheel-drive honors, with Kyle McBride & Darren Curran and Casey Jay Coleman & Adam Coffee in Rally 4/R2 Ford Fiesta’s, while Ciaran McCullagh & Michael White leading the Class 11F charge in their Honda Civic.
The J1000 class, for competitors aged from 14-18 years old, is absolutely booming in 2022, and this continues on the Willie Loughman Forestry Rally, with 17 crews entered for the event. Jack Brennan/ John McGrath (Skoda Citigo) lead their section of the rally away, while the rest of the top 5 includes Tommy Moffett/Gary McCrudden (Toyota Aygo), Jack Kennedy/Mark Kennedy (Nissan Micra), Mossie Costello/Tom Murphy (Peugeot 107) and Letisha Conn/Stephen Conn (Skoda Citigo).

Time is getting short, and cars are entering final preparation stages as the Motorsport Ireland Irish Forest Rally Championship returns next Sunday, April 10th, with the Carrick-on-Suir based Willie Loughman Forestry Rally.
A long-standing round of the Championship, this year the Carrick-on-Suir Motor Club event is the second stop on an exciting year for Irish forest rallying, and a welcome return to stages last seen over two years ago.
The 2022 Willie Loughman Forestry Rally will take place over a route of approximately 45.38 stage kilometers and will comprise of 6 Forest stages with two services, one after Parc Ferme out before SS1 and one after SS3 in Mill River Business Park, Carrick-on-Suir. The town center business park will be a central hub for the event, with Scrutiny taking place there on the Saturday evening.
Entries have been flying in, with a sizeable number of competitors having signed up for the high- speed thrill that the Carrick lanes have in store, and the system remains open for all those still looking to get on the start list. Entries are €700 for Main Field & €450 for Junior 1000, and can be completed online through www.shannonsportsit.ie.
After Round 1, the Killarney Forest Rally, Desi Henry & Paddy Robinson lead the Driver & Co-Driver standings, ahead of Sam Moffett/Keith Moriarty & Jordan Hone/Paul Hone. In the 2WD section, John Gordon & Elaine Ní She sit atop the championship leaderboard.
Sadly, the Killarney Forest Rally on February 20th 2022 was halted after three stages following the tragic accident which saw competitor Eoin McCarthy lose his life competing in a sport he loved. On behalf of the Motorsport Ireland Forest Rally Championship, we wish to offer our sincere condolences to the McCarthy Family, as well as Eoin’s numerous Friends and extended Family.
