007 stunt driver and three times British Rally Champion, Mark Higgins, is taking time off from filming in Italy for the latest Bond movie, in order to take part in Deja vu Ireland West this weekend. Donagh Kelly has stepped in at the last minute and has kindly lent Mark the Nissan Almera in which Mark's rally career almost came to an end!
Mark began in motorsport in karting aged nine and made his rally debut in 1991 aged just 16, driving an Opel Manta. His exploits earned him his first ‘works’ drive with Vauxhall Dealer Sport at the wheel of the legendary Nova GSi, where in 1992 he finished sixth in the British championship. His first title success came in 1997, in a Nissan Sunny GTi, which he clinched with victory on the Ulster Rally. In 1999 Mark signed a works deal for Volkswagen and finished sixth in the standings with two podium finishes, with a World Rally Championship win in F2 on Rally GB.
In 2000 Mark returned to the Vauxhall works team, winning three rallies to finish runner-up after two retirements and his first of five Manx Rally wins. His next full season came in 2005 with the Eddie Stobart team, driving a Ford Focus RS WRC, where four wins in a row allowed Mark to win the title for the second time.
His third crown followed in 2006 and wins on the Jim Clark and Manx Rallies earned him the accolade of becoming the third most successful driver in British history in terms of championships won, following Jimmy McRae (5) and Roger Clark (4). Double runner-up in 2007 and 2008, Mark came close to equalling Clark’s tally in ’09, but disaster struck on the Yorkshire Rally after the most close-fought season in history, when he crashed out on the final stage, within sight of the title. Four-time Autosport National Rally Driver of the Year, Mark has been equally successful on the International stage, winning numerous events in the Rally China Championship, where national regulations prevent him from being awarded the overall driver’s crown. He has also secured several top positions in World Rally Championship including outright win in Mexico PWRC.
Mark also holds the record as the fastest man on four wheels around the iconic Isle of Man TT Mountain Course lapping the 37.73-mile course in 17min 35.139 sec, equating to an average speed of 128.73 mph.
Away from the rally stages Mark has a long history as a stunt driver in a number of feature-length films including the last three James Bond films; Quantum of Solace, Skyfall and Spectre, and the Hollywood blockbusters Avengers: Age of Ultron and Fast and Furious 6.

There will be plenty of opportunity to “fire up your memories” of the glory days of rallying past and present, when the 130 car cavalcade of historic rallying and supercars set out from Westport’s Mall on Saturday 1st October at 10.00 am.
After the start, where RTE’s Michael Lyster will be chatting to rallying legends such as Austin MacHale, Jimmy McRae, Andrew Nesbitt, John Lyons and Dermot Carnegie, they will climb over Partry Mountain, a former Circuit of Ireland stage, and then down to the western shores of Lough Mask.
From there they head west to another famous COI and Galway Rally stage, Lough Nafooey (approx. 10.45). Many crews are likely to stop for a coffee at Maum Cross (11.00 – 12.30) before continuing south to another former COI stage at Camus.
Then its west again via Derryrush, another famous stage, and on to the lunch halt in Roundstone (12.30 – 14.30). After lunch at the picturesque fishing port they make an about turn and retrace their steps to the Ballinahinch Lake stage with its backdrop of the famous Twelve Bens Mountain range.
Then they join the main road to Clifden (13.30 – 15.00) and from there its all main roads through Letterfrack, past Kylemore Castle and down along Killary Harbour and into Lennaun (14.00 – 15.00).
The final part of the 130 mile route brings the Déjà vu cavalcade back to Westport’s Quays for a ceremonial finish at 16.00pm where there will be time to meet the stars and marvel at the cars before they depart to their overnight parking area.

Donagh Kelly, the 2015 Irish National and Irish Tarmac Rally Champion is the latest rallying name to join a glittering array of the legends during Déjà vu Ireland West.
And if the names are special so are the cars, as Donagh will be driving the Ford Fiesta WRC that eight times World Rally Champion Sebastien Ogier used to win the Portuguese, Mexican, and GB Rally Wales. This ex- M-Sport car helped the French driver to gain his two World Rally Champions in 2017 and 2018 and is now part of Donagh’s exhibits at his fabulous rally museum in his homeland at the Fosses in Donegal.
This great motoring re-union of 130 historic rallying and supercars, will leave The Mall in Westport at 10am. on Saturday 1st October 2022 on a non-competitive 130-mile run through Connemara. Spectators are in for a treat as the fabulous array of World Rally, Group 4, and Group A cars travel over some of the special stages that were used on the Circuit of Ireland and Galway International Rallies in the past.

Shortly after 10am on Saturday 1st October, JYC 450 N will leave The Mall in Westport and head for Partry Mountains to cover the sinuous piece of road leading down to Lough Mask. Partry is a stage that the gleaming Porsche Carrera’s former owner, Ken Shields, has great memories of as Ken drove it with great aplomb on the Circuit of Ireland Rally in the 1960’s and ‘70s.
The fully restored 911 will be in the hands of its new English owner Nick Vince, who has brought his gleaming red machine back to its old battle ground at Ken’s request. And the equally well preserved Ken Shields will be in Westport to witness his old cars progress on the 130 mile run.
JYC 450 N had one of its finest hours on the Connemara stages in 1976 when Ken and his co-driver Peter Lyster drove it to the runner-up spot on the Galway International Rally. Ken shared JYG 450 N with the Lisburn garage owner John McClean and rallied it in a wide variety of events. In addition to the international rallies like Galway, the Circuit of Ireland, Ulster, Donegal, and the Cork 20 events, he also enjoyed many solo outings.
There are numerous class awards on the Shields sideboard from the popular sprints in Barnetts, Ormeau and Wallace parks and the historic Croft and Craigantlet Hillclimbs. Ken only non-finished twice in the three years that he competed in the Porsche, so here’s hoping that Nick can add to the 911’s reliability record in Ireland.
The Déjà vu Ireland West entry, which is open until Friday 9th, September, has now passed the 105 entry mark. This leaves you just six weeks to get your entry in and join the stars and their cars on this 130-mile run through some unsurpassable scenery and over some historic stages as as Lough Nafooey. Online entries and Gala Dinner reservations can be made at www.rpm-motorsport.com/tours - Link below

One of Ireland’s most successful co-drivers, Ronan McNamee, will be taking the driving seat of a Ford Escort on Déjà vu Ireland West on the 1st, October 2022.
Ronan spent almost six seasons alongside the ‘flying Finn’ Pentti Airikkala and their big win was on the 1989 Lombard RAC Rally in a works backed Mitsubishi Gallant VR4. Their other win was on the 1989 Welsh Rally, a round of the British Rally Championship and again they were in a Mitsubishi, a Starion Turbo on that occasion.
Ronan, who hails from Crossmaglen, gained his navigational experience with some of Ireland’s fastest drivers - Winston Henry, Brendan Fagan, Austin MacHale and Andrew Nesbitt. And it was Ronan’s company Cuisine de France that backed Andrew enabling him to become a two-time Irish Tarmac Rally Champion, a Circuit of Ireland Rally winner, and a five-time Donegal International Rally winner.
Ronan will have another co-driver turned driver, Vincent Meade, reading the tulip diagrams for him in Mayo and Connemara. Vincent partnered the Malahide Ford dealer Ritchie Healey to multiple wins before changing seats to drive Ford Escorts and an Opel Ascona 400 and Manta 400 with considerable speed, on National and International events.
The Déjà vu Ireland West entry, which is open until Friday 9th. September, has now passed the 100 mark. This leaves you just six weeks to get your entry in and join the stars and their cars on this 130-mile run through some unsurpassable scenery and over some historic stages as as Lough Nafooey.

Jimmy McRae, the five-times British Rally Champion and seven-times Circuit of Ireland Rally winner, will be returning to the place where his international rallying career kicked off, when he lines up to start Déjà vu Ireland West on Westport’s Mall on October 1st. Jimmy who is a major supporter of our Déjà vu events, will be driving one of Connor McCluskey’s exotic WRC cars.
That Henley Forklift Galway win in 1980 wasn’t plain sailing for the Scottish driver and his Northern Ireland co-driver Frank Main, in their Vauxhall Chevette HS. They were led throughout the first night by the Cork husband and wife team, Mick and Anne O’Connell, in their privately entered Ford Escort RS 1800, before clutch and gearbox problems put an end to their run. Ger Buckley came home five minutes behind the visitor in his Escort RS 1800, but a year later the Kanturk Driver, with Con Murphy beside him, reversed the tables during the O’Malley Construction Galway International. Jimmy had complained of a ‘soft brake pedal’ throughout the 1981 event, but when he returned in ’82, in search of European Championship points and with Ian Grindrod in the passenger seat, the pendulum swung again in McRae’s favour. Jimmy’s car headed an Ascona 400 one-two on the BP Galway International Rally, with his old rival Ger Buckley second in the other Opel.
With a few weeks to go before the closure of registration, already 100 entries have been received. The entertainment package for the Gala Dinner has been finalised, and the permissions granted to give the event a spectacular start and finish in Westport. The Mayo Motor Club have thrown their weight behind the event and all the profits from the event will be going to local charities

It is with great regret that we have to inform you that once again Covid has taken it toll on our Déjà vu Motorsport plans. On our recent visit to Westport, despite exploring all options, it became evident that it has become impossible to run an effective event, within the current or even projected Covid rules in the Republic of Ireland.
Three things have been against us:
Posted: April 2, 2021 9:58 AM
Due to unprecedented demand we have had to close the entry list and we are now taking reserves. These will be collated on a first come first serve basis. Those who are not allocated a starting number will receive total refund of their entry fee.

Two rallying legends from two different eras, Paddy Hopkirk and Rory Kennedy, will team up again on Déjà vu Ireland West on the 17-18 September 2021. It is the second time the former Rootes Group and BMC works driver will be guided by the Letterkenny co-driver who has over fifty victories in his CV.
So what will these two rallying mega stars talk about as they take their spirited drive through the Mayo and Connemara countryside in a Paddy Hopkirk Special Addition Mini Cooper’S’? ‘Crumpet’, I have no doubt knowing Paddy! Faraway places perhaps, such as the countries Paddy visited on the 1986 London to Sydney Marathon, in which he was second in a BMC 1800 MkII. Or his trip through the Americas in a Triumph 2.5 Pi when he was fourth on the London to Mexico Rally in 1970.
Rory can certainly match him on internationalism as he has competed in Finland, Latvia, France, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Corsica, Cyprus, Turkey, China and the USA.
If the conversation leads to the home rallies Paddy has five Circuit of Ireland wins to Rory’s four, but the territory that they will be covering should be more familiar to the Donegal man as he has five Galway International Rally trophies on his sideboard.
If they talk about their favourite events, Paddy’s 1964 Monte Carlo Rally win must come up as must Rory’s years with the late Bertie Fisher. That partnership netted them four Irish Tarmac Rally Championships.
As Rory enthused “Without doubt Titanic Ulster Déjà Vu Ulster was the highlight of my year in 2018, and I am honoured and privileged to be sitting with Paddy again in the West. To have a day to ourselves will be a golden opportunity to hear about some more of his extraordinary experiences”
Entries for the Westport based event, which will support the Roscommon and Mayo Hospice, are now in their nineties, and are still available at: www.dejavumotorsport.com and www.rpm-motorsport.com/tours, link below.

Eighty-five of you have already signed up for the magnificent run through the Mayo and Connemara countryside. it will be well worth waiting for as the quality of the entry indicates. Expect to see at least sixteen Porsches including a fabulous 911 RSR; eight Minis and Mini Cooper S’s; nine Escorts of all varieties; four Subarus; three Toyota Celicas; Opel Mantas; Sunbeam Lotus, Tiger and Avenger models; a Fiat 131; a Ford Focus WRC and much more.
And as always on our Déjà vu events you will be rubbing shoulders with legendary motoring personalities such as Paddy Hopkirk, Jimmy McRae, Rosemary Smith and Austin MacHale.
Déjà vu Ireland West will herald the grand re-awakening of historic motorsport in Ireland, a time to celebrate and to meet those old friends that we haven’t been able to see for many months.
Registration, dinner and hotel bookings will automatically roll over to the new September date and prices are frozen apart for a small increase in the Hotel Westport room rates. If the change of date doesn't suit, don’t worry, we will refund your registration and dinner payments minus a small percentage to cover our PayPal dues.

Austin MacHale, six-time winner of the Galway International Rally will lead the mighty parade of historic rally cars and other fascinating motors out of Westport this year. Hotel Westport will be the Rally Headquarters. Over one hundred crews will take part and there will be a hundred and thirty mile route and Gala Dinner.
Déjà Vu Ireland West will take place this year but whether it will be on the 21-22 May as currently planned, or on the 17-18 September, we will have to wait and see.
Like all organisers we do not get the final say in these turbulent times, as Covid-19 makes all the shots. The safety of all is our paramount consideration. When we postponed from September 2020 to May 2021 it was more than reasonable to assume that the pandemic would have subsided enough to finally get Déjà vu Ireland West underway. But now, with four months to go there are doubts that the vaccines will have been sufficiently distributed to warrant the safe running of our highly social event.
We have therefore taken the precaution of reserving a further date on the 17-18 September, 2021. We will make the decision by March, 1st .
If we have to change to 17-18, September 2021, don’t worry as registration and dinner prices will be frozen and all registrations and dinner bookings will roll over. There will be a small increase in Hotel Wesport rates but bookings will automatically roll over to the September date.

Jimmy McRae, the Circuit of Ireland Rally supremo and twice Galway International winner will return to the West in 2021 for the great Déjà Vu Ireland West party on the 21-22 May.
The Lanark native and five-time British Rally Champion, is loved by the Irish and loves the Irish stages on which he has won 7 Circuits of Irelands; 3 Ulster International Rallies; the Donegal and the Cork 20 International Rallies, and the Galway International in 1980 and 1982.
Jimmy will be joined by two other former Galway winners, Austin MacHale and Gareth MacHale who are amongst the sixty-five crews that have already registered for the 130-mile route through the Mayo and Galway mountains. A route that incorporates many miles formally used by both the Circuit of Ireland and Galway International rallies.
The West has a special place in Jimmy's heart as the 1980 Henley Forklift Galway Rally was his first international win and one of the Dealer Team Vauxhall early successes with their HS Chevette. Ger Buckley followed him home that year in an Escort RS 1800, but the Cork driver returned in 1981 in a Chevette HSR to beat Jimmy’s Opel Ascona 400.
The McRae/Buckley rivalry continued in 1982 when both had Ascona 400s but on that occasion the Scottish driver, despite early contact with a telegraph pole, headed the Corkman home.
Déjà Vu Ireland West’s non-competitive run will revive many motoring memories at a pace that will allow the entrants to enjoy the West’s unsurpassable scenery and the onlookers to wonder over a cavalcade of glorious rally machinery from the last fifty years.
Déjà Vu Ireland West, which will support the Roscommon and Mayo Hospice, will be based at Hotel Westport in the historic town and will use part of the grounds of Westport House, the magnificent manor that was designed by Richard Cassels and James Wyatt in the 18th. Century.

Dessie started his rallying at Queen’s University Belfast where he was a medical student. He won the QUB Motor Club Championship on several occasions and his first major success was to win the Northern Ireland Rally championship outright in 1976.
Due to a fine result in the 1976 Galway International in his Vauxhall Magnum, Dealer Team Vauxhall kindly gave him a works engine and gearbox and arranged sponsorship with Castrol. Unfortunately the car was quicker than the brakes and it ended its career against a wall in Ramelton in the Donegal Rally in 1977.
After a hiatus he decided to take up Historic Rallying and bought Mervyn Johnson’s own Mini Cooper S, AIL 3300, and went on to win the Dunlop Tarmac Historic Championship in 1994. This car was replaced this with his current rally car, a 2 litre yellow Porsche 911 built by Francis Tuthill. He won the Irish Historic Tarmac Championship five times in succession and decided to move to the British MSA Championship which we also won five times in succession.
Over the years he has been navigated by Derek Smyth, Austin Fraser and Rory Kennedy. His current co-driver Geraldine McBride has co-driven for 25 years. In recent years he has been navigating for his son Michael and they won Class 1 in the Northern Ireland Rally championship.
Combining his medical degree with Motor Sport he has acted as Medical Officer during the East African Safari Rally.

The MacHale family will be a centre of attraction during Déjà Vu Ireland West on the 21-22 May next year when the great rally reunion comes to Westport, County Mayo. Both Austin, who comes from nearby Louisburg and who holds the record number of wins, and Gareth will join the host of other rally celebrities taking part.
Déjà vu Motorsport’s sixth charity event will support the Roscommon and Mayo Hospice and will take in in many of the famous stages which were used on the Galway and Circuit of Ireland rallies. Although it is a non-competitive run, spectators will have the opportunity to see many of the classic rally cars that took part in those rallies over the years as they negotiate their way over many of the famous special stages such as Lough Nafooey.
They will include the ex-works Toyota GT4 Celica ST185 with which Austin won the 1998 Galway International Rally. Mark Doyle of KD Cars in Lurgan has completely restored the ex-Didier Auriol Toyota for the event and thanks to Mark's generosity Austin will be reunited with it for the 130 mile run through the magnificent Connemara scenery.
Austin will also drive a selection of other cars including Joey O'Shea's fabulous Opel Manta.
Gareth will be navigated by Brian Murphy who shared so many of Austin's victories in the hot seat and will drive the Ford Focus WRC with which he won in 2010.

Trevor Agnew and Angus Watt liked Déjà vu Donegal so much that they are making the return journey from the south of England to Ireland West. It's a homecoming for Trevor since he was born and bred in Markethill in County Armagh. He is one of a long list of Ulster co-drivers who have made their mark on the world stage, such as Derek Johnston and Terry Harryman who both won the Monte Carlo Rally. The list also includes Fred Gallagher, twice winner of the East African Safari rally, Chris Patterson, the 2006 Production World Rally Champion, Rory Kennedy, Stephen McAuley, Allan Harryman, Bobby Willis, Gordon Noble and Aaron Johnston.
Trevor has co-driven for Mark Higgins, Neil Wearden and Martin Rowe with whom he won the 2003 Production World Rally Championship. After hanging up his crash helmet he has become a very successful performance coach and facilitator. He currently hosts the podcast The Stage by Stage Way
?
Angus is a Porsche aficionado and owns Greatworth Classics which restores classic Porsches. They will of course be driving a classic Porsche.
Trevor said: - “We’ve all been through a lot since Déjà vu Donegal so it’s nice to be able to look forward to another fantastic weekend’s reminiscing along with some amazing cars on the Emerald Isle, providing it’s safe to do so. The recent news is certainly positive, so fingers crossed we can all meet up and have a bit of craic. I’ve no doubt the event will be oversubscribed so Angus put the pressure on to get the entry in early and the accommodation booked. We’re mad for it!”
Angus has fond memories of his first Déjà vu “The welcome I got in Donegal was simply fantastic. I had been there before visiting customers when I used to sell rally cars at Prodrive, so it was great to catch up with some old friends as well as make lots of new ones. The entry of cars was phenomenal, the stages we drove were spectacular and the black stuff tasted great too!”

Six-times Galway International Rally winner, Austin MacHale, will head the parade at the sixth Déjà Vu Motorsport event when the cavalcade of mouth-watering rally cars leaves The Mall in Westport County Mayo on Saturday 26th. September.
?
Austin, who is a native of Luisburgh, which is just down the road from the Déjà vu Ireland West start, first won his ‘home’ international rally in 1985 with Christy Farrell as his co-driver in the Shell backed Manta 400. By 1990 Austin had acquired a BMW M3 and Ronan McNamee partnered him to his second Galway win. He kept the car but changed his co-driver to Dermott O’Gorman for his third win in 1991.
O’Gorman was still with Austin in 1993 when they topped the time sheets in a Toyota Celica ST165, but Kenny McKinstry’s Subaru Legacy proved to have the upper hand over the aging Toyota the following year. Austin again had to settle for the runner up spot in 1995 when Frank Meagher’s Ford RS Cosworth pipped him in a real cliff hanger, but two years later Austin sprayed the champagne for the fifth time in Eyre Square when Brian Murphy joined the team which had upgraded to a Toyota ST185.The ST185 proved to be Austin’s all-time favourite car as it not only brought him his sixth Galway win in 1998, (again with Brian Murphy co-driving), but also his fourth and record breaking fifth Irish Tarmac Rally Championships.
But that was not be the last time that the MacHale name appeared at the sharp end of the Galway International Rally’s result as in 2010 Austin’s sons took two of the three places in a pair of WRC Escorts. Gareth won with the old ‘family retainer’ - Brian Murphy by his side and Aaron was third with Eugene O’Donnell reading the notes.
Forty crews have already registered for the autumn event including Ireland’s first lady of motoring Rosemary Smith who will again be driving Andy Hennessy’s V8 powered Sunbeam Tiger over the 130 mile route through Mayo and Connemara which takes in many of the classic Galway International and Circuit of Ireland stages.
Registration details are on: www.rpm-motorsport.com, link below.
Profits will be donated to the Mayo and Roscommon Hospice.

Phil Short won the Circuit of Ireland in 1973, co-driving for Jack Tordoff in a Porsche 911. He has remained a big fan of Ireland ever since and has taken part in all Deja vu events since the Paddy Hopkirk Gala. He will be navigated by his wife Lyn. He is seen in this photo co-drivng for Dai Llewellin.
His international co-driving career started in 1970 and he enjoyed considerable success alongside the likes of former world champions Hannu Mikkola, Björn Waldegård and Walter Röhrl. He also partnered Pentti Airikkala, M-Sport boss Malcolm Wilson and David Llewellin, twice winning the British international series alongside the Welshman and claiming 17 international victories.
Short switched to team management and oversaw nine world drivers’ titles and seven manufacturers’ crowns during his time at Audi, Toyota, Mitsubishi and Ford.
Short has guided more than 100 promising young drivers and co-drivers through the early stages of their WRC careers and witnessed the likes of Ott Tänak, Hayden Paddon, Craig Breen and Elfyn Evans progress to the sport’s top level.
?
For the last 11 years, Short has held a key management role in various incarnations of the series, including the Pirelli Star Driver, WRC Academy and the current FIA Junior WRC. He stepped down as sporting supervisor after the final round at Wales Rally GB.

Nobody is sure where the phrase “Go West Young Man” came from. Some say John Babsone Soule invented it in an editorial in 1851, but it was the American Horace Greeley, author and newspaper editor who put it into popular parlance.
We will be celebrating a young man who “Came out of The West”, Louisburg, County Mayo, to be precise, during Déjà Vu Ireland West. That young man is the six-time winner of the Galway international Rally - Austin MacHale.
Austin will lead the classic car cavalcade out of Westport and into the Mayo and the Connemara mountains on the 26th September on a 130-mile route that will pass over famous Circuit of Ireland and Galway International Rally stages and through some of the most breathtaking vistas on the Wild Atlantic Way.
EXPERIENCED PLANNING
The route for this sixth Déjà vu charity event has not evolved by chance but through years of rallying experience, as one of the organisers Dr. Beatty Crawford will be literally going over old ground.
It was Beatty who guided another young man Adrian Boyd to victory on the 1973 Galway International Rally, so some of the territory will seem familiar even though that was forty-seven years ago.

Déjà vu Motorsport is going west in 2020 to fire up memories of some of the great Galway and Circuit of Ireland stages. Our rally re-union will centre on Westport. This Georgian architectural gem, with its tree lined malls and stone bridges over the river Carrowbeg, designed by William Leeson in 1780, will host Déjà Vu Ireland West this September.
The popular tourist destination was first put on the map in the 16th century by the pirate queen Grace O’Malley who plundered the seas from her base on Clew Bay. Déjà Vu Connemara will be setting out to rediscover famous stretches of road like the Lough Nafooey and Sky Road stages that were used on the five-day Circuit of Ireland and Galway International rallies.
Our weekend will have a familiar feel to the Déjà vu’s run in Killarney, Belfast and Donegal. Arriving in Wesport on Friday, entrants will register and enjoy a welcome reception. Then on Saturday morning they set off on a 100 + mile run through the spectacular Connemara scenery.
On their return there will be time to change before the gala dinner featuring big screen footage of historic rallying action; personality interviews; and top class entertainment.
The cavalcade of mouth-watering motors will be a travelling museum of rallying history and the entry will be sprinkled with former champions and some special international guests.
As on all Déjà vu Motorsport events, all the proceeds will go to a local charity, shortly to be announced. Registration, limited to the first 120 crews, will open on the 1st, February 2020.
