JCR Rally Kart Championship 2014

2014 is a landmark year for the JCR Rally Kart, as it marks the fruition of JCR Rally Kart Championship. This is a very unique championship that takes place in a diverse range of events throughout Ireland. It is also special, as it is the only championship in Ireland that offers prize money for the top three places in the final standings.

The first round is the Co. Kildare Rallycross in Mondello Park on the 16th of February. For many competitors, this will be their first foray into Rallycross and it will be an exhilarating experience, as the wheel to wheel racing is sure to produce close battles throughout the day. Round 2 will have a change of venue and event type, moving from Rallycross to Autocross at the Co. Cavan Motorclubs Latton Quarry venue. The event takes place on the 23rd of March and uses the very difficult 2.7km, part-tarmac, part-concrete circuit. A cool head and controlled drive is required to win in Latton, the neatest driver should take maximum points away from the slippy track.

The championship takes a short break, returning again on the 11th of May for Mayo and District Motorsport Club's loose surface autocross. Unlike Cavan, the Mayo event is exclusively gravel and the 2.7km course is one of the trickiest in Ireland. This change in surface is one of the pivotal aspects of the championship, as it levels the playing field between competitors. Some drivers may excel in the sealed surface of Cavan but struggle on the loose in Mayo. This challenge is going to add to the competition and hopefully bring the championship down to the wire at the final round.

Round 4 marks a return to the Mayo Autocross event in Harringtons Quarry Kilkelly on the 8th of June. From here, the crews go to Tralee on the 19th of July for the Kerry Rallysprint. The Kerry Rallysprint is based in Tralee racecourse and is organised by the Co. Kerry Motor Club. It runs on a mixture of tarmac, concrete and gravel and is a very demanding track on man and machine. This marks the half way point in the season, when the crews get a month-long break before returning to action for the final five rounds.

For the third and final time of the year the JCR Rally Kart Championship returns to the Mayo Autocross on the 24th of August. The tough quarry event is deemed as one of the best tracks in Ireland, hence its inclusion three times. After Mayo it is another trip to the Co. Cavan Autocross on the 28th of September followed by Wexford Autocross on the 19th of October.

The penultimate round is the Carrick-on-Suir Rallysprint on the 2nd of November. This event, organised by the Carrick on Suir Motorclub, is held within the confines of a business park. Hence there is a multitude of unusual obstacles to hinder the competitors, such as curbs and concrete bollards that are not found on any other event. The championship comes to a close in Mondello Park on the 23rd of November for the Co. Kildare Rallycross. We hope to see the championship winner decided at this event after a year of close competitive racing.
