Craig Breen’s busy weekend off.

Even though Peugeot Rally Academy Driver Craig Breen is effectively on a break between rallies he has been busier than usual this weekend.

On Friday morning Craig was announced as the March winner of the “Park Hotel Sports Star of the month award” in recognition of winning his first European Rally Championship round last month when he took his Peugeot 208 T16 to victory on the Acropolis Rally in Greece. Craig is now a four time winner of this prestigious Waterford sports award having received it twice in 2011, one of which was when he won the World Rally Championship Academy. In 2012 his monthly award when he took the WRC Super 2000 title saw him go on to claim the Supreme Sports Star award at the end of the year. On receiving the award this time Craig said
“it felt fantastic to be honoured with the Park Hotel Sport Star of the month award again” and he thanked the judging panel for continuing to recognise his achievements as his career has progressed.

Later on Friday evening Craig was guest of honour at two separate functions, the first of which was in Piltown, Co. Kilkenny where the press launch took place for the forthcoming “Festival of Motorsport” which will take place on Sunday July 13th at the Iverk Showground’s in Piltown. The show, a joint venture between Carrick-on-Suir Motor Club, Piltown Community Enterprise Board and (SERT) Southeast Radio Therapy Trust, not only hopes to raise some much need funds for the three organisations but will be an excellent display every type of vehicle from every era and above all promises to be a great family day out.

From there Craig went straight to New Ross, Co. Wexford where the launch night of “The Five Counties Marshals Club” was held. The Club is set-up completely by volunteers and is the only marshals club recognised by Motorsport Ireland which will offer people professional training and the chance to help out at events around the country as part of a rewarding team. Addressing the attendees Craig stressed the fact that he simply could not do what he does without marshals and he urged people to get involved if only in a small way even so that the sport he loves so dearly doesn’t fade away.

On Sunday Craig got back to what he does best, behind the wheel of a car by competing at the Tipp Rallysprint in Clonmel Racecourse. The sprint run by the Tipperary Light Car & Motorcycle Club was a last minute decision by Craig and his long time sponsor James Coleman of Suirway Forklifts & Farm Machinery who had already planned to compete on the event in the same Mk2 Escort that Craig drove in Killarney and Donegal last year. Craig didn’t disappoint the fans that turned up to watch him and he showed why he is a Peugeot Rally Academy driver by dancing the rear wheel drive escort through the course to win the event outright.
