Sheahan and Tierney Crowned 2008 McAree Engineering Border Rally Champions

Mark Sheahan and Mark Tierney were crowned McAree Engineering Border Rally Champions for 2008 at a gala awards ceremony at the Four Seasons Hotel in Monaghan on Friday night.

Driving his Renault Clio Super 1600, Mark Sheahan from Limerick had a faultless season on his way to clinching the driver’s title, taking class 6 victory on each of the five rounds he entered. Meanwhile Mark Tierney made it two Border titles in a row, the Monaghan man having claimed the title last year with Gary McPhillips.

Receiving awards for Border Championship runner’s-up were Donegal driver / co-driver pairing Daniel Conaghan and James Gallagher. Last year’s champion driver Gary McPhillips finished third overall in 2008, while Donegal navigator Gary McNern picked up the award for third overall co-driver.

Over 250 guests packed the Hillgrove Hotel to celebrate another exciting Border Rally Championship, which, under the enthusiastic sponsorship of McAree Engineering, continues to go from strength to strength. Among the evening’s highlights was a special cake presented by series sponsor Brendan McAree to rallying stalwart Niall Maguire in celebration of his 50th birthday.

Among the competitors receiving class awards were Kenneth McHale and Derek McCarthy in class 1, Adrian Gannon and Conor Comack in class 2, Pakie and Calum Duffy in class 3, and class 4 victors Fergal Costello and Shane Gilhooly.

Eamonn McCafferty and Jackie Donaldson took the class 5 awards, Ruairi Maguire and Kieran McGrath were winners in class 6, Roger Kennedy and Wendy Blackledge won class seven, with Niall Maguire and Paul McLoughlin first in class 8.

Class 9 went to Thomas Carolan and Declan Smyth, Aaron McQauid and Barry McGill won class 10, John Ward and James O’Reilly claimed class 11, and Eamonn McGuigan and Michael Moran were first in class 12.

Manus Kelly and Donal Barrett were the winners in class 13, Trevor Mulligan and Lisa Roe took class 14 while in class 15 Jack Maguire and Richard Cassidy were the respective driver and co-driver victors.
