Wilton Recycling Donegal International Rally - Press Release Four
Posted: June 19, 2024 10:43 AM
Excitement is building as one of the most highly anticipated Donegal Rallies in years is set to start this weekend. The entry list is extremely competitive predicting the overall winner, as well as the winners in each class, is no easy task. The starters list includes multiple Donegal, Irish Tarmac, and British Rally champions.
On Thursday, the cars will arrive for scrutiny at McGinley Motors in Letterkenny, starting at noon. Following this, there will be a ceremonial start on Port Road, a lively event for the whole family. The event will feature live music, a display of past and present rally cars, and a wide range of rally-related merchandise. Drivers and co-drivers will also be present. An opportunity for fans to get autographs and take selfies! The ceremonial start will kick off at 6 pm, after which the crews will proceed over the ramp and park their cars for the evening. Additionally, there will be a safety briefing for all crews at the An Grianan Theatre.
Last year's winners, Callum Devine and Noel O’Sullivan will lead the 160+ starters on Friday as they head to tackle six challenging stages in the Inishowen Peninsula. There will be two service stops during the day in Carndonagh.
On Saturday morning, an additional 32 crews will start the historic section of the event and take on all the tests on Saturday and Sunday.
Saturday will feature eight demanding stages for the crews. It will start with the challenging Knockalla stage, followed by Garrygort, which will be repeated. After lunch, Glen and Lough Keel will be on the agenda, providing another tough test of pace, the two stages will be repeated. Crews will visit the service area four times on Saturday, located in Kiltoy on the outskirts of Letterkenny, which will also serve as the service area for the Sunday stages.
Get ready for an exciting Sunday drive! The upcoming rally in Donegal will feature three challenging stages: Gartan, Atlantic Drive, and Fanad, each to be traversed twice. These stages are considered classics, making this Sunday a super day for Irish Rallying. The Junior Rally will join for the six Sunday stages and will see an additional 14 crews start the event.
It's anyone's guess which crews will claim the prizes, but one thing is for sure: the winners will have taken on one of the greatest challenges in the rallying world. The winning crew will be awarded the Jim Kennedy Cup, and the winning driver will receive the Manus Kelly trophy. Additionally, a new trophy this year will be presented to the co-driver in the leading 2WD car in remembrance of Austin Frazer, who played a significant role in the rally's history.
Live coverage of the event will be provided by On The Pacenote and On the Limit Sports Via their Facebook pages and they will both have a full round up show after the event.

DONEGAL TO BE PIVOTAL TO CRONIN & GALVIN'S TARMAC TITLE CHALLENGE
Posted: June 19, 2024 10:41 AM
Of all Irish rallies, the Donegal International is regarded by most competitors and followers as 'The Big One', not only in terms of competitive distance, but also in relation to difficulty, and prestige. At least some of this status is borne from the fact that it was, for a long time, the only three-day event in the Irish Tarmac Rally Championship calendar, and also because its traditional mid-summer date usually sees it attract the largest spectator numbers of the year. The current leaders of the 2024 series, Keith Cronin and Mikie Galvin, are all too aware of the pivotal role that this weekend's edition can play in determining the destination of the Tarmac crown.
The Killarney and District Motor Club crew won the first two rounds in Galway and West Cork, but then lost out to Matt Edwards and David Moynihan on the Circuit of Ireland when the latter outfoxed them on tyre choice late in the event, while a near-certain victory on the Killarney Rally of the Lakes was foiled by a puncture. Cronin and Galvin have a 13.5 point advantage at the head of the Tarmac leaderboard in the M O’Brien Group of Companies/Lyons Motor Group/Shane Casey Electrical Services Ford Fiesta Rally 2, from Edwards and Moynihan, while Killarney winners, and reigning champions, Callum Devine and Noel O'Sullivan, are third, a further 17.5 points back.
"We've finished every round so far, which is always a plus," said Cronin, as he made final preparations for the long trek from his Ballylickey base to the North-West. "We're leading the championship at the moment, although we could have been in a much stronger position points-wise if the Circuit and Killarney had gone our way, but you're never going to get a year where every rally goes perfectly, it just won't happen," he added. He and Galvin did return to winning ways on the British Championship-counting Jim Clark Rally at the end of last month, and will hope to continue that good form into this weekend. "It was great to get our BRC season back on track, we had had a bad start on the first two rounds there, so the win was badly needed," noted Cronin.
His most recent outing in Donegal was in 2016, the year of his and Galvin’s previous Tarmac Championship victory. On that occasion, he lost out to the late Manus Kelly by just 0.5 of a second for the rally win, following a final stage showdown, so Cronin could be forgiven for regarding the event as unfinished business, but he is under no illusion regarding the task in hand. "It's a long, long, rally up there, 275 stage kilometres, there's so many opportunities for things to go against you, so we may perhaps take a more gradual approach than we have for some of the other rounds so far," he predicted. "Matt and Callum, and Josh Moffett, have much more recent experience there, Callum and Josh have won the last three between them, Matt finished second last year and led the year before. It'll be a tall order to get the best of any of them. Whoever the winners turn out to be, they'll have a good weekend's work done," said Cronin.
With just the Ulster Rally and Cork '20' International rounds remaining after Donegal, Cronin will be mindful that dropped scores will start to come into play, as the best five from seven results count towards a competitor's final Tarmac points tally. "We're the only crew with two wins so far, but if Matt or Callum was to draw level in Donegal, it would be very tight to stay ahead over the last couple of rounds, so there's no doubt that the outcome this weekend is important," he notes.
The Donegal International Rally gets underway on Thursday evening, with the Ceremonial Start taking place in Letterkenny Town Centre. The crews will tackle six stages during Friday, followed by eight on Saturday and six on Sunday. The 2024 Donegal winners will spray the victory champagne at the Mount Errigal Hotel in Letterkenny at 6.35pm on Sunday evening.
Keith Cronin and Mikie Galvin are supported by M Group of Companies, Lyons Motor Group, Shane Casey Electrical Services, Molson Equipment, Pirelli, EARS Motorsport Ireland, Cronin’s Centra (Ballylickey, Union Hall, Leap, Millstreet and Dundrum), Cronin’s HomeValue Hardware, Westlink Service Station and Daybreak Shop, Cremin Coaches, Keohane Seafoods, M-Sport and Wurth Ireland. Their Ford Fiesta Rally 2 is prepared and run by Tom Gahan Motorsport.

Stellantis Motorsport Rally Cup ready for Donegal duel
Posted: June 16, 2024 3:39 PM
The Stellantis Motorsport Rally Cup IRE & UK resumes its battle for a €75,000 prize fund next weekend, as the Wilton Recycling Donegal International Rally plays host to the fourth round of the epic new series [21-23 June].
Promoted by Race & Rally, the new-for-2024 championship for both Peugeot 208 and Opel Corsa Rally4 machinery allows drivers to compete across eight, top-class events in Ireland and the UK.
An on-event cash pot of €6,000 is available to the first five crews’ home at each event, with the winner collecting €3,000, sliding down to €500 for fourth place. The fifth-placed driver receives one Michelin Motorsport tyre from distributors Protyre Motorsport Ireland. Plus, the Junior champion at the end of the season will receive registration to the 2025 FIA Junior European Rally Championship, entry fees to six rounds of the Junior ERC and twelve tyres per round contested in the series, worth almost €40,000.
With three rounds complete, it’s Welshman Ioan Lloyd who sits at the top of the standings and heads to Donegal in the pound seat. He and co-driver Sion Williams are the only pairing to have taken two maximum scores this season thanks to wins at West Cork and Rally of the Lakes, but the Peugeot 208 crew ended their Severn Valley Stages off the road, meaning the battle for the top spot is still wide open.
Eleven other contenders are bidding to hunt them down, and it's Keelan Grogan who sits just nine points shy in second. Co-driven by Ayrton Sherlock, Grogan has improved his score on every round contested with runner-up spot in the Lakes a highlight; a win surely is just around the corner for the Irishman.
Recovering from a shaky start to the season, Kyle McBride is on fine form of late, taking the non-championship Jim Clark Rally Junior BRC win in emphatic style last month. His asphalt pace is proven and with Darragh Mullen alongside and will be a strong bet to be in the race for a win this time out.
But everywhere you look in the Stellantis Cup, there are rapid young chargers who are more than capable of being in the mix. Casey Jay Coleman/Lorcan Moore have found themselves fighting for podium positions on many occasions, and consistency pays in championship fights, and those contenders who can regularly rack up points could well be in line for the top prize at the end of the season.
The Scottish crew of Robert Proudlock and Steven Brown scooped an impressive Severn Valley win as they revelled on the gravel, but two other non-finishes put them down the leaderboard. Joseph Kelly and Killan McArdle are on an upward trajectory with their points accumulation, so will be hoping for more in Donegal, whilst Matthew Boyle and Gary Byrne enjoyed a strong if not late start to their campaign in the Lakes.
Youngster Kalum Graffin and co-driver Richard Crozier continue to learn their Peugeot and as the season progresses, could well start troubling those higher up the order. John O’Rourke and William Nolan uphold Opel Motorsport honours in their Corsa Rally4 and will be eager to banish their Rally of the Lakes impact from their minds.
Three days of classic Donegal lanes await with a gruelling schedule which begins with six stages on Friday. Super Saturday sees over 106 kilometres on offer although Sunday’s final leg is no walk in the park, with six tests and ninety-one kilometres in store, bringing the total to over 275 competitive kilometres and twenty stages during the weekend. A true test of the Stellantis Motorsport Rally Cup IRE & UK contender's resilience and skill.
Irish Tarmac battle set for three-day Donegal showdown
Posted: June 16, 2024 3:37 PM
Samdec Security International ITRC
Three days and 20 magnificent stages await the Irish Tarmac Rally Championship’s contenders as the all-asphalt series heads to the Donegal International Rally.
A maximum entry of rally cars will tackle renowned stages like Malin Head, Knockalla, and Atlantic Drive across the three days of jam-packed action.
Callum Devine and Noel O’Sullivan are top seeds and will defend their maiden Donegal victory from 12 months ago. Their Irish Tarmac Rally Championship campaign suffered blows in West Cork and the Circuit of Ireland but a much-needed win in Killarney has put them back in the mix.
Seeded second, Keith Cronin has been the man on form so far in the Irish Tarmac Rally Championship. The 2016 Irish Tarmac Champion is looking for his third win in this year’s series.
Success in Donegal would go a long way in his bid for a second Irish Tarmac title but he faces stiff competition from a string of Donegal winners.
Those include Monaghan brothers Josh and Sam Moffett who are both seeded within the top five and Declan Boyle and Garry Jennings who are running either side of tenth seed Cathan McCourt.
Matt Edwards and David Moynihan are hoping it will be third time lucky after an accident and mechanical issues scuppered their previous two Donegal assaults. They showed their pace in both years and victory on the Circuit of Ireland proved Edwards’ speed has carried through to 2024.
Cronin holds a 13.5-point lead over Edwards in the Irish Tarmac Championship with three rounds still to go with Devine a further 17.5 points back in third. Dropped scores will benefit Cronin’s rivals with the title all to play for heading into the summer rounds.
ITRC 4 leaders Ryan MacHugh and Declan Boyle are the top Rally4 seeds in Donegal. They will be challenged by second-placed Keelan Grogan and Rally of the Lakes winner Ioan Lloyd who is making the trip from Wales.
Dylan Eves and Kyle McBride complete Rally4’s top five entries although close to ten crews could challenge for Rally4 victory.
McEvoy Motorsport Modified ITRC
Kevin Gallagher and Ryan Moore will man the first two-wheel-drive car through Donegal’s opening Malin Head test on Friday. The Darrian T90 crew, who won the modified section and finished 10th overall last year, are seeded 22nd for this year’s event ahead of the Toyota Corolla of Kevin Eves and Ford Escorts of Damien Tourish and Mark Alcorn.
A trio of Toyota Starlets will be eyeing up Donegal’s modified prize in Declan Gallagher, Richard Moffett, and David Moffett.
Scotland’s David Bogie, and National regulars Dessie Keenan and Jonathan Pringle are further two-wheel-drive contenders while Killarney Rally of the Lakes’ modified winners Colin and Kieran O’Donoghue are gunning for Donegal glory.
Frank Kelly and Kevin Eves hold third and fifth respectively in the McEvoy Motorsport Modified ITRC standings. They will be looking to make the most of the three-day event as fellow championship frontrunners Damian Toner, Kevin Kelleher, and Conor Murphy have opted out of the challenging classic.
Sherwood Engines Historic ITRC
Michael McDaid and Declan Casey top a 31-car-strong historic entry list as the historic rally begins on Saturday morning’s opener, Knockalla.
Casey is two points adrift of Anthony O’Sullivan at the front of the Sherwood Engines Historic ITRC Co-Drivers’ standings. O’Sullivan will co-drive for Meirion Evans in Donegal - Evans hoping to get his second win of the season after an impressive win in Galway with O’Sullivan.
Tomas Davies holds a strong 30.5-point lead over Craig MacWilliam in the drivers’ standings with Ray Breen just behind in third. All three will take on this year’s Donegal Rally amid a stunning historic entry featuring drivers like Tommy O’Connell, John O’Donnell, and Vivian Hamill.
Paul Browne Plant Hire & Civil Engineering Junior ITRC
The Class 16 crews will take on Sunday’s six stages - repeated drives of Gartan, Atlantic Drive, and Fanad Head.
Kyle McDaid and Shane Maguire top the 14-strong entry ahead of Jason Wilkinson and Ciaran McGinley.
Ronan Dorrian and Jordan Jervis are seeded third and fourth respectively with Paul Browne Plant Hire & Civil Engineering Junior ITRC leaders Barry McIntyre and Brian Keohone seeded sixth.

Wilton Recycling Donegal International Rally - Press Release One
Posted: May 13, 2024 5:14 AM
The 2024 Wilton Recycling Donegal International Rally is already in the advanced planning stages. The rally will start on Thursday, 20th June and finish on Sunday, 23rd June.
On Thursday, the participants and their cars will arrive in Letterkenny for scrutiny and a ceremonial start. On Friday, the crews will compete on roads that haven't been rallied for 13 years. Saturday and Sunday will feature more traditional areas with a twist.
Eamon McGee, a Gweedore man, has returned as the Clerk of the Course for the premier motorsport event in Ireland. Eamon and his team have been working hard to provide an exciting, challenging and rewarding rally for its participants. McGee expressed his gratitude towards his team for putting their shoulder to the wheel and pushing to develop the rally. "This year, they have some exciting developments that will be announced over the coming weeks. Entries for the rally closed on Monday, the 6th, and we have been overwhelmed by the number of crews who have placed an entry. A record number of entries have been received for the main field, plus a strong Historic and Junior entry.
On Friday, we will make a long-anticipated return to the Inishowen Peninsula. Saturday's schedule will feature a mix of traditional stages with a twist, plus a stage that has never been used before in the international rally. On Sunday, the remaining crews will face a real challenge with three classic stages, each with a few surprises".
Eamon continued by expressing his gratitude towards all the outside agencies who supported their efforts and thanked Rodney Wilton from Wilton Recycling for being a supportive sponsor.
The Wilton Recycling company is happy to announce that they are returning as the title sponsor for the upcoming rally. Rodney Wilton, the CEO, expressed his delight with the feedback from last year's rally. He said, "The Donegal Rally gave them an ideal opportunity to increase brand awareness. Eamon and his team exceeded their expectations. The company is excited about their participation in the rally in 2024".
Brian Brogan, the chairman of the Donegal Motor Club, is eagerly anticipating the arrival of everyone to Donegal in the next few weeks. "With record numbers entering the event, we expect record crowds. It is impossible to find accommodation across the whole county for rally weekend. The rally brings a boost to the county and kick-starts the summer season. They use some of the best roads in Ireland, which provide an epic backdrop to the best rally in the country".
More details in the coming weeks, be sure to subscribe to the Donegal International Rally social media pages to stay updated with the latest information.
