Irish Rallycross Championship finally set for the green light

Posted: April 6, 2018 11:26 AM

The 2018 Rallycross season will finally get underway this Sunday, April 8th, having lost its original season opener to snow. This weekends Round 1 is an addition to the calendar so the championship will still have its full six round schedule.

April will be a busy month for the sport as the season opener is followed two weeks later by one of the biggest events for Irish Rallycross in many years. On April 21st & 22nd the Parts for Cars Irish Rallycross Championship will join with the Irish Drift Championship for 'Showdown' and exciting new event with an exciting new track layout, which is not to be missed.

Just over one month after its originally scheduled start date, the 2018 Parts for Cars Irish Rallycross Championship will finally get the green light at Mondello Park this Sunday, April 8th. The weather put paid to the original season opener, but the season will still have a six date calendar with this weekends rescheduled event.

Sunday's season opener will run on the familiar clockwise Mondello Park Rallycross Track which is the first of four different circuit layouts to be used this season. Following the opening round the drivers will be back in action at Mondello Park unusually quickly, as the championship returns to the Kildare circuit on April 21st & 22nd to race on a completely new circuit as part of 'Showdown', a combined Irish Drift Championship and Irish Rallycross Championship event.

This weekend's entry list is headed by multiple Irish and former European champion Derek Tohill with his Parts For Cars Fiesta. The reigning champion's main opposition in the 4WD Supercar division will come from the Mitsubishi of Noel Greene, the Escort Cosworth of Derek Jobb and another Fiesta driven by Declan Kelly.

The 2WD Modified Division remains the most popular class in Irish Rallycross with a quality eleven car entry headed by the Lotus Exige of Lloyd Spendlove and Michael Coyne's Vauxhall Nova. There's plenty of variety in the Modified ranks with both front and rear wheel drive represented on a grid featuring everything from a rare Vauxhall VX220 to a Honda Civic.

A strong Production Class entry, the one make Fiesta class, an increased grid of Junior Rallycross drivers, Rallycars and Rallycross Buggies will round out the very varied entry list for what should be a great start to the new season

Sunday's event begins with practice from 09:30 followed by three runs of heats and the decisive finals where championship points will be won and lost.

Tickets are available to buy on-line form the Mondello Park web site at the discounted price of just €12.50, or €15.00 at the entrance gate.
