Hot on the heels of the recent Sean Conlon Memorial Tipperary Forest Rally, the Motorsport Ireland Junior Rally Series makes the swap to Tarmac solely for our J1000 field this weekend as they tackle the Wexford Motor Club Rally Sprint.
Ireland’s National Mix-Surface Rally Series, the MIJRS is quickly becoming a vital step in the development of a host of upcoming and exciting Irish rallying talent and already this season its clear just how close and enthralling the battles are set to be for the 2023 crown. Now that we’ve seen the opening pair of rounds on Gravel, we now get to see our youngest stars tackle Tarmac for the first time this year.
The New Ross based event will see drivers tackle a minimum of four runs over the 3.2km course, and its an exciting opportunity to build on skills honed at the recent J1000 Tuition Day held on the tarmac at Tynagh, Co. Galway.
As has been the case for quite a while now, the entry list boasts a huge cohort of J1000’s with 13 crews heading to the South-East. The standout names are the duo of Jack Kennedy and Tommy Furlong, both having tasted victory so far this season and aiming to build a strong MIJRS points score, but they have plenty of competition to deal with!
Ross Ryan currently sits second to Moffett in the Series standings and will be aiming to push his great rivals hard, while the likes of Tommy Cronin, Jack Harris and Danny Brady will be hoping to reduce the impact of dropped scores already accrued in their title bids. One to keep an eye out for on the times though will be David Travers, while it may only be his second J1000 event, the youngster has a lot of Tarmac knowledge having spent time circuit racing at Mondello park.
Newcomer Callum Graffin has shown incredible pace so far this year and is set to compete on a sealed surface for the first time, similar to other MIJRS debutants this year such as Ryan Caldwell, Ciara Duggan, Tommy Furlong, Conor Ryan & Charlie Browne who will all be out to gain vital experience on a new type of rallying environment.
The action kicks off at 10am on Sunday with an action packed day in store for the youngsters, but then its sure to be a frantic fortnight as cars will be back in Gravel spec as the MIJRS moves on the Moonraker Forest Rally on June 25th, where the J1000 field will be joined once more but the Rally4/R2, Rally5 and J1600 crews as we get loose once more in the Ballyvourney forests.
