Our joint title sponsor FAAC simply automatic has generously offered a contribution towards the entry fee to each of the MIJRS entries starting Sligo this year, to be presented to each driver immediately before Driver briefing on Sunday morning.
Ciaran Phelan as a competitor himself and father of Cormac who during his progression became a nominee for the Billy Coleman award. This recognition gave the then young competitor the impetus to pursue his dreams even further.
The current Motorsport Ireland Junior Rally Series is a platform to encourage and promote and assist junior competitors focusing on developing their motorsport future. Their entrance into motorsport at an early age with the support of the Rally Academy give young drivers every opportunity reach the highest pinnacle of their motorsport career. Connacht Motor Club are delighted to be included as a Tar round of the championship particularly as Leitrim driver Keelan Grogan is a registered entrant and only recently was chosen as a nominee of the Billy Coleman Award. The field of juniors are seeded as a group in the mid forties.

This weekend is set to be an exciting one for a number of Ireland’s rising Rallying stars, as the Motorsport Ireland Junior Rally Series heads to the northwest for the Sligo Stages Rally, the sixth round of the race for 2023 glory.
Ireland’s National Mix-Surface Rally Series, the MIJRS is quickly becoming a vital step in the development of a host of upcoming and exciting Irish rallying talent and already this season its clear just how close and enthralling the battles have been for the 2023 crown, as we already head to the penultimate event on Tarmac for many of the registered competitors.
Designed for future stars under the age of 25, the Rally4/R2 class is the spearhead of the Championship, and the winners here are competing for some incredible prizes that are designed specifically with their development in the sport at the core. Not only will the winner receive a Training & Coaching program to the value of €15,000 through the Motorsport Ireland Rally Academy, but they will also receive a nomination for the Billy Coleman Award. 2nd and 3rd place in the Class will also receive support packages.
With the Championship standings calculated on a bases of ‘Best 2 Gravel Scores’ plus ‘Best 2 Tarmac Scores’ plus ‘Best Other Score’, many have taken the opportunity to try and build a score early as the series transitions between both surfaces.
Chief amongst those is current points leader Dylan Eves, the Donegal native showing really strong stage times on both surfaces this year so far, culminating in a maximum haul of points on Round 3, the Tipperary Forest Rally. Remarkably we have had four different round winners from five, with Kyle McBride claiming the ten points on the Killarney Forest Rally to kick off the season.
Aoife Rafferty took an impressive win on the most recent round of the series, the Moonraker Forest Rally, but like McBride their season’s have seen them compete outside of Ireland under the guidance of the Motorsport Ireland Rally Academy meaning they don’t feature amongst the head of the leaderboard, but this weekend in Sligo is followed by the loose-surface speed fest that is the Cork Forest Rally in August and the finale on Tar at the Clare Stages in September.
On our two sealed-surface visits so far, on the Midlands Stages and Cavan rallies, Keelan Grogan has been the class of the field, reeling off a pair of victories against strong fields of registered crews, but having not appeared on Gravel yet this year he sits two points behind the consistently fast Ryan Caldwell who has had a very strong start to the campaign.
For others in the MIJRS Raly4/R2 class, 2023 has been a year of learning and getting up to speed with a whole new class of car. For both Ryan McHugh and Mossie Costello, they have stepped up from the J1600 class to homologated FWD machines, while for Shane Quinn & Dan Nash the year to date has been focused on getting seat time in their Rally4 machines.
In the J1600 class, Jack McKenna has been in a class of his own, recording victory on both Tarmac rounds contested to date, as well as a really impressive result on the recent Moonraker Forest Rally in what was his very first event on Gravel. Getting young drivers to experience different surfaces over the course of a season early in their career is a key part of the MIJRS, and the pace shown by Jack, and other debutants this year, has been really exciting to watch.
In the Rally5 Class, Jack Brennan has been the sole entrant in the MI Academy liveried Renault Clio. Having stepped up from the J1000 ranks, Brennan has used this year so far to get experience of both surfaces, longer events and achieve some remarkable stage results in what is the very first step of the Homologation Car ladder of opportunity designed by the FIA.
While the crews above will be aiming for victory on this weekend’s Sligo Stages Rally, for the J1000 crews their focus instead is set squarely on the final two events for them, the Cork Forest Rally and Carrick-on-Suir Rallysprint which both fall a week apart on the 20th & 27th of August. The battle for the title there is reduced to a shootout between Tommy Moffett and Tommy Cronin, with the latter knowing anything but victory on both events will hand the title to Moffett.

With less than three weeks to go until the actual date of July 16th for the Faac simply automatic /Sligo Park Hotel Stages rally, entries have hit the close to the 200 mark with time still remaining until the closing date of July 5th and still a number of championship contenders expected to sign up. Competitors are reminded that only fully paid entries at the closing date are deemed valid and when they will then receive an email confirming entry.
Amongst those in the mix so far are many interesting pairings, including Donagh Kelly with Rory Kennedy on the notes in a BMW M3, both crews having visited Sligo on a number of occasions, and indeed Rory finishing on the podium as far back as 1988. Another interesting pairing entered are the Doherty brothers Daniel and Michael in a R5 Fiesta making a return to Sligo having won the Rally back in 1999. James Leckey entered also in a Fiesta, having been on the starter list back in 1993 is destined to hit the Sligo stages again this year.
Some competitors with possible sights set on a leaderboard finish, would most likely be Jonny Greer with local Niall Burns on the notes, two times winner Declan Boyle or indeed three times winner Niall Maguire. An array of others with potential to be in the mix include Gareth Sayers, Aidan Wray, Steve Woods from Wales, Frank Wray or Tim Mc Nulty with local navigator and former CoC Paul Kiely on board.
More than 120 Marshals required to cover Stages.
Chief Marshall Jarlath Barry is currently recruiting support from neighbouring clubs in the region to cover the requirement across the three stages. He is encouraged by the support received from clubs which our membership would have supported to date this year in varied roles, and from clubs with events planned for later in the year which the club would have committed to. Jarlath has appealed to any additional experienced marshals who would wish to lend their support to make contact and their help will be gratefully accepted. In recognition, title sponsor FAAC simply automatic have generously provided a goodie bag to be raffled, one for each of the nine stages, which will include a collection sought after merchandise and a 50 euro note, which will be drawn from the marshal list signed on in the morning. A number of other prizes will be added to the draw over the coming week.

Now with the publication of Regulations on Sunday last, Sligo’s mid-summer event is ready to accept entries online from Monday next June 5th at noon. No doubt within the current motorsport climate, with most events to date this year being oversubscribed, a substantial level of entries will be received in the opening days. This will be especially influenced by the fact of being at a midway milestone within counting rounds of three of the premier rally championships, namely the Triton National, the Sligo Pallets Border and the Top Part West Coast series and also a round of the MI Junior Rally Series. Traditionally once neighbouring Donegal International is behind us, and competitors get through it unscathed, the floodgates of entries turn towards the Sligo event.
As part of the rescheduled Motorsport Open Day due to take place on Sunday June 11th at Sligo Park Hotel, the organising committee of Rally 2023 plan to host the event Photoshoot to officially launch proceedings in the run up to Sunday July 16th.

The organising team under the guidance of Clerk of the Course, Ultan Mc Gowan have been putting flesh on the bones of the 2023 FAAC simply automatic / Sligo Park Hotel Stages Rally in preparation for Sunday July 16th. The three-by-three stage format has been selected with communications already carried out with the residents on the event route. A very accessible central service area has been chosen and scrutiny will be hosted at a special venue with particular appeal to the general public in mind.
The committee are overwhelmed with the support from the loyal sponsors who have last been on board back in 2019, namely FAAC simply automatic and Sligo Park Hotel, but also the associate, stage, scrutiny , service and special award sponsors to be announced in the coming weeks .
The rescheduled date for the Connacht Motor Club’s Open Day on Sunday June 11th will be combined also as a platform to launch our 2023 Stages Rally, when the organisers, sponsors, personalities and the media come together to kick the event off.
The important forthcoming dates for competitors to keep in mind are, Regulations will be published on May 28th with entries opening online on Bank Holiday Monday June 5th at 12 noon.

Following a three year break due to, two years of the pandemic, and last year as a result of the introduction of twenty four month National Rally calendar, meaning Sligo slotted into year two.
The FAAC simply automatic / Sligo Park Hotel Stages Rally is scheduled to take place on Sunday July 16th and with some plans already in place from 2020 , Clerk of the Course Ultan Mc Gowan and his team has already begun preparation for mid-July.
Ultan taking on the mantle for the first time comes with vast experiences gained from different prospectives, both as a competitor and an organiser. His recent undertaking as Clerk of the Course for the Connacht Motor Clubs inaugural Hillclimb in 2021 and the successful two day Championship rounds last year was a true reflection of his organisational skills.
The club are delighted to the confirmed loyalty of title sponsors FAAC simply automatic and Sligo Park Hotel at this point giving the organising committee the confidence in planning and currently are seeking and securing further associate sponsors.
The event is Round 5 of the Triton National Rally Championship, Round 3 of the Sligo Pallets Border Rally Championship and Round 3 of the Top Part West Coast Championship as well as Round 6 of the Motorsport Ireland Junior Rally Series.
