The 2022 British Rally Championship moves to the Scottish Borders region this weekend for the second of its seven rounds, the Jim Clark Rally, based in the historic market town of Duns. For four-time champion, Keith Cronin, it marks a return to an event he won in 2012, on the way to his third BRC title. Similar to the opening round in Essex last month, the rally is an all-tarmac affair run on closed public roads. Two stages, one after dark, await the field on Friday evening, with a further seven to be tackled on Saturday.
“It’s hard to believe that was ten years ago”, recalls Cronin of his previous success on the Jim Clark. “The regulations were very different that time, we were all in two wheel drive cars, I had a Citroen DS3. The brake pedal broke on one stage, so we were lucky to make the finish at all. The pace is a lot hotter now with the four wheel drive Rally 2 machines”.
Having initially led in Essex, Cronin and his co-driver, fellow Killarney & District Motor Club member, Mikie Galvin, were later overhauled for the win by Osian Pryce and Noel O’Sullivan, and thus lie second in the BRC points. Cronin expects a strong battle again this weekend in Scotland, where the top four seeds are all in Volkswagen Polo GTI R5s. “Osian went very well the on the Rally Tendring & Clacton, he’ll be hard to beat again. Meirion Evans is joining the championship too, he hasn’t been far away from an overall win in Ireland recently. James Williams was close to Osian and myself last time out, and Ruairi Bell was quick too before he had problems. It’s a strong field and I’d say we’ll all be closely matched”.
The event is named after 1963 and ‘65 Formula One World Champion, Jim Clark, who grew up near Duns. The ultra-adaptable Clark also tried his hand at rallying, entering the 1966 RAC in a Lotus Cortina. He shocked the established stars of the era, taking three fastest stage times and running in the top ten, before an off resulted in retirement. Former Ladies World Rally Champion, Louise Aitken-Walker, is also a Duns native, as was the late Andrew Cowan, winner of two London-Sydney Marathons, and later manager of the Mitsubishi world rally team.
Cronin will have a new tyre supplier in Duns after the conclusion of his alliance with Hankook Tire. He expressed his gratitude to the firm for partnering with him in the BRC: “I want to thank Hankook Tire and the teams in Daejeon and Neu-Isenburg for all of their assistance and efforts over the past year and a half. I have very much enjoyed working with Hankook Tire on the development of its products, I hope that my contribution has assisted the company and that it will bear fruition for them”.
The British Rally Championship will provide live updates from the Jim Clark Rally on its facebook page, @brcrally.
Cronin and Galvin’s British Rally Championship campaign is supported by M O'Brien Group of Companies, Keohane Seafoods, Cremin Coach & Mini Bus Hire, Inver Energy, Cronin’s Homevalue Hardware and Cronin’s Centra (Ballylickey, Leap and Union Hall). Their Volkswagen Polo R5 is prepared and run by Tom Gahan Motorsport.

The Motorsport UK British Rally Championship heads to Duns this weekend [27-28 May], as the Beatson’s Building Supplies Jim Clark Rally makes a welcome return to the action-packed roster after seven years away from the Scottish Borders lanes.
In fact, the last time the UK’s premier rally series was blasting down the unforgivable Berwickshire closed roads, it was in the era which saw only two-wheel-drive cars eligible to compete for the prestigious title.
But now, a blistering array of top-flight BRC1 crews in a variety of Rally2, four-wheel-drive, turbocharged machinery will line up to do battle over the two-day event, as will a dynamic and impressive line-up of ultra-rapid Junior and Academy drivers, each aiming to take the spoils at the last asphalt round of the series until September.
Taking the opening round win, 2021 championship runners-up Osian Pryce and co-driver Noel O’Sullivan secured a thrilling victory in the Essex lanes, overhauling four-time BRC champion Keith Cronin in the final throws of the event and will wear the coveted number one on the doors of their Melvyn Evans Motorsport run Volkswagen Polo GTi.
Driving the Michelin shod machine for the second successive season, Pryce is in no mood to play second fiddle again and will be looking for another maximum point haul to keep his dream alive. But Cronin has form on the Clark. A previous winner of the rally in 2012, the Irishman knows what it takes to master the Borders lanes and will be charging as hard as he dares in the Hankook backed Volkswagen Polo GTi with Mikie Galvin on the notes.
But the BRC is not known for being predictable and any one of the front-runners could well take the spoils in Scotland. James Williams and Dai Roberts kicked off their first full BRC1 campaign in superb style in Clacton, taking their Hyundai i20 to a stellar podium spot after a progressively improving pace over the weekend. Going one or even two better this time around is a distinct possibility.
Ruari Bell and Max Freeman made a huge impression on the BRC leader board at round one, challenging Cronin for the lead before being forced into retirement with a damaged radiator. Their Pirelli-shod Skoda Fabia could well be suited perfectly to the bumpy tar in Berwickshire and a maiden BRC win is not far away.
Garry Pearson will be calling on all his local knowledge to right the wrongs of the opening round after ending his rally in a ditch. The Duns driver will be driving the roads just a few miles from his home but will still need to dig deep in his Ford Fiesta Rally2 to take it to the front of the pack. Dale Furniss returns to the co-driver’s seat and the pairing will understandably be playing their Joker for a potential points bonus.
Jason Pritchard and Phil Clarke endured a difficult season opener and will be looking to find some much-needed luck as they take their Polo GTi to the Jim Clark for the very first time. Pritchard has tackled the event previously, although he will need to draw from the distant memory banks as it was during his last BRC campaign back in 2011.
Elliott Payne is a self-professed gravel man but the nineteen-year-old proved his ability on any surface with fourth place on the sealed surface season opener in Essex. With Tom Woodburn in the co-driver’s seat, Payne was beaming after his closed road debut and that confidence could well net a good result this time around.
Instrumental in securing Melvyn Evans Motorsport the BRC Teams title in 2021, Meirion Evans makes his BRC1 debut at the Jim Clark Rally, driving a Polo GTi. Announced only this week, Evans and co-driver Jonathan Jackson have a blistering asphalt pace as proven during their Irish Tarmac campaign and could well disrupt the podium.
Clacton would prove a tough BRC baptism for Andy Davies, who was gaining confidence with every stage on his debut in the Fiesta. Along with co-driver Rob Fagg. Davies was climbing the leaderboard until a heavy crash put them out of the rally on the spot. Whilst the Ford won’t be ready for the Jim Clark, the team are hoping to utilise another steed for the event.
Equally as enthralling as the battle for the topflight BRC1 honours, the Junior British Rally Championship crews will also offer up some breath-taking action in the lanes.
It would be Norway’s Ola Nore Jr with British co-driver Jack Morton that took the spoils in round one but with the duo being forced to miss the Jim Clark, all eyes will be on 2021 JBRC runners up Eamonn Kelly and Conor Mohan as they play their Joker card this weekend.
Like many of the latest generation of BRC contenders, they will be making their Jim Clark Rally debut and will need to be on top form to keep their rivals at bay in their Ford Fiesta Rally4. Kyle White and Sean Topping briefly led in Clacton and showed signs of getting to grips with their all-new Peugeot 208 Rally4. Once bedded into the Scottish roads, they could well show their hand once again.
Ioan Lloyd and Sion Williams enjoyed an impressive Junior BRC debut run in their Peugeot 208 Rally4, taking fourth on their first-ever closed road asphalt event in Essex, but they will be chased hard by Johnnie Mullholland and Eoin Treacy and Academy Trophy leaders Kyle McBride and Liam McIntyre, both using Fiestas.
The National Rally Champion top spot was eventually decided on the final stages in Clacton as Craig Jones and Ian Taylor nailed the handling in their Ford Fiesta to overhaul leaders Mick O’Brien and Mark Glennerster in their Focus WRC, putting their Joker and bonus points nomination to effective use.
Jones will have new challenges on the horizon as the series welcomes back Alan Carmichael and Arthur Kierans in their Hyundai i20. The ultra-experience Ballymena driver finished runner up in the BRC National category in 2019 and fourth in 2021 so will undoubtedly be looking for that elusive title this time year. William Mains is joined by Emily Easton-Page this time around and will be aiming for another solid result in his rapid Vauxhall Nova.
In contrast to Clacton, the Jim Clark Rally offers vastly longer stages and Friday night kicks off with two runs across the infamous Longformacus test. At around twelve miles, and in darkness for the second pass, it could well shape the rally.
Saturday sees seven more stages for the BRC contenders with classics such as Westruther and Eccles bringing an air of nostalgia to the event. The Jim Clark Rally was often regarded as a flagship event in the BRC calendar, and we can be sure that it will not disappoint on its return.

The Beatson’s Building Supplies Jim Clark Rally will welcome a dazzling list of rally crews to Duns this weekend [27-29 May] as the best drivers in the UK and beyond head to the Scottish Borders for the revitalised event.
Over two hundred and forty drivers will tackle the closed public roads in Berwickshire across three days of motorsport action, bringing the sport of rallying into the heart of the community. The Jim Clark Rally will play host to the top-flight Motorsport UK British Rally Championship for the first time since 2014, as well as the Protyre National Asphalt Rally Championship and a host of regional series.
Sunday’s Reivers Rally will see contenders in the KNC Groundworks Scottish Rally Championship make their first foray onto asphalt this season in the Borders and will once again be joined by an impressive list of popular regional rally championships.
Sponsored by leading construction merchants Beatson’s Building Supplies, the rally returns after a two-year sabbatical due to the pandemic but enjoys a fresh look, more akin to past events. On offer, will be three days of competition of over around 115 miles of special stages, using classic tests from previous editions, coupled with new twists to challenge the crews to the limit.
Centred around Duns, the market town hosts the Rally HQ and service areas, and the Town Square will see the Ceremonial Rally Starts and Finishes take place on the famous cobbles. Crews will be flagged away from the town on Friday at 19:00 with two passes of the Longformacus stage ahead of them, the latter of which will be under the cover of darkness.
Day two sees a move to the southwest of Duns with Eccles, Westruther and the Scott’s View tests being run twice throughout the day with the British Championship crews tackling Eccles for the third time. The popular rally ceremonial town centre finish celebrations, presentations and champagne spray, will take place from 16:00.
Sunday’s Reivers event is a shorter but no less impressive blast and once again enjoys a ceremonial start at 10:00 from Duns and heads northeast for the popular Fogo, Ayton and Edrom stages before the finish celebrations at 14:00.
Steeped in history, the Jim Clark Rally first ran in 1970 and has remained one of the most prestigious stage rallies in the country. Names on the winner's trophy include Roger Clark and Ari Vatanen and aiming to stamp their name alongside the legends of rallying are number one seeds, Osian Pryce and Noel O’Sullivan.
The British Rally Championship heavy hitters join the Jim Clark Rally on Friday and Saturday, and Pryce was the runner up in the series in 2021. The Welshman is looking to go one better in his Volkswagen Polo GTi R5 this season and is on track after a round one win in Essex but has a former Jim Clark winner hot on his heels in Irishman Keith Cronin.
Cronin and co-driver Mikie Galvin will look for their first BRC win since 2017 and will also be in a Polo R5. Making it a top-four Volkswagen affair, Meirion Evans and Jonathan Jackson start the event at number three, making their BRC1 debut in a Polo, whilst teammates Jason Pritchard and Phil Clarke join them at car four.
Duns is strongly represented too with local ace Euan Thorburn contesting his first event since 2020. Driving his familiar Ford Focus WRC, the Scottish Champion has Paul Beaton on the notes and will also tackle Sunday’s Reivers. But the fight for bragging rights will be on between him and fellow Duns driver Garry Pearson. Driving a Fiesta Rally2, Pearson will be putting all his local knowledge to the test and could well secure his first BRC win on home soil. He has Dale Furniss in the co-driver’s seat.
James Williams and Dai Roberts round out the top five in their Hyundai i20 R5 and will be searching for more BRC podiums after a Clacton third overall. Behind them, a blistering array of crews and cars all eager to sample the Border roads as it returns to its May slot for the first time since 2014.
The Reivers Rally also sees a sensational entry thanks to the Scottish Rally Championship, headed by 2011 rally winner David Bogie. Driving a fan favourite Mini JCW WRC, Bogie and John Rowan will be using the machine on asphalt for the first time, as they resume their SRC bid. Currently, joint leader of the series, Bogie will hope to pull out a lead on nearest challenger, Cornhill’s Michael Binnie in his Mitsubishi who starts at four with Duns co-driver Claire Mole.
Another Duns driver Dale Robertson tackles his first rally since 2019 and has World Rally Championship co-driver Stuart Loudon in the co-driver’s seat for both the Jim Clark and Reivers Rally. They will use a Fiesta R5, as will Freddie Milne and Patrick Walsh would round out the top five.
Spectators will be well catered for across the rally weekend with plenty of opportunities to catch the action on the stages and get up close to the stars and cars during event formalities.
The Town Centre of Duns will host the Start and Finish celebrations with commentary by Knockhill’s Duncan Vincent and a big screen showing the action from the stages. Mid-event regroups will also take place in the centre, meaning cars will never be far away throughout the weekend.
Spectator access to watch the action is available on many stages in the rally, with full information available on the rally website and in programmes which are available throughout the town of Duns during the rally week.
The Jim Clark Rally is also a round of the AS Performance North of England Tarmac Championship, ANECCC SG Petch Rally Championship, HRCR Motoscope Northern Historic Rally Championship and the Armed Forces Rally Championship. The Reivers also welcomes the Burnside Piling Scottish Tarmac Championship and Fuchs Lubricants RACRMC Asphalt/Rally2 Mixed Surface Rally Championship.

After 2 exciting rounds on the gravel in the forests of the north, the KNC Groundworks Scottish Rally Championship moves onto a sealed surface for the next 2 rounds, starting with the Jim Clark Reivers Rally next Sunday, May 29th.
Heading up the field, 5 times champion David Bogie is reunited with regular co-driver John Rowan, free from his WRC commitments for a weekend. With the new Escort still under construction David is out in the McGeehan prepared MINI WRC that's brought him so much success in the forests and he's interested to see how the car handles the tarmac.
Michael Binnie, Freddie Milne & Jock Armstrong have all taken the fight to Bogie on the 1st 2 rounds. Taking the Snowman win, Michael & co-driver Claire Mole are determined to do well on their local event and will be match fit by the Sunday having already completed the 2 day rally on the Friday & Saturday.
Freddie Milne & Patrick Walsh showed their tarmac prowess, taking maximum SRC points on the 2021 Argyll Rally. Back in their familiar R5 after a run in a Rally 2 car last time out they will be ones to watch.
Jock Armstrong & Cammy Fair's return to the old faithful Impreza continues. Having found some suspension amongst the collection of bits he has, who knows how Jock will go. The Reivers does hold some bad memories for him, having been excluded in the past for an issue with the Impreza's diff....
In the mix with the top SRC seeds, 3 times Scottish champions Euan Thorburn & Paul Beaton are out for a run on Euan's home patch, as well as local man Dale Robertson in a Fiesta R5 with Stuart Loudon alongside, fresh from his run on the WRC Portugal rally.
The rest of the big players from the opening rounds are in attendance. Bruce McCombie & Michael Coutts will be making their tarmac debut in the WRC Focus & Scott Macbeth & Dan Forsyth have already shown tarmac form in the past.
Mark McCulloch & Michael Hendry will begin the tarmac development of the Satria Evo and hopefully continue their Speyside battle with the i20 of John Wink. Fresh from a strong run on the Border Counties John has Neil Shanks back in the hotseat.
Donnie Macdonald returns after missing the Speyside, the Fiesta just ahead of Barry Groundwater's Impreza WRC. They'll be chased down by John Rintoul & Ross Hynd. The FCE crew switching to their MINI WRC for the tarmac.
Angus Lawrie & Paul Gribben head up the Albyn Garage Challengers crews, chased by team mates Willie Paterson & Tom Hynd.
Autoshop 2wd winners on the Speyside, Stuart Egglestone & Brian Hodgson top the 2wd entrants in their Historic MK2, chased by fellow Escort legend Steve Bannister with Callum Atkinson alongside.
Both will need to watch out for Peter Stewart's 208 R4, navigated by Dave Robson, and the local Tuer brothers making their 1st SRC appearance in their Clio R3T. French cars on tarmac could be a potent combination.
Justin Gunning & Robert Proudlock have 1 win apiece in the Moates Offshore Junior standings. Both come into this round with new navigators, Keir Beaton steps into the Fiesta while Lewis MacDougall jumps in the Adam's passenger seat.
Mike Moates & Gary McDonald are the sole 5 Star Vehicle Deliveries Subaru Cup crew while the Haddo Energy Super Seniors will be a 4 way fight between Ernie Lee, Alistair Brearley, Gordon Murray & Jim McDowall.
All 4 protagonists in the Ladies battle are back for the 1st run on the tarmac. Aileen Forrest heads the seeding and the championship battle. Ashleigh Morris, Nikki Addison & Meghan O'Kane will all be chasing the Evo driver down.

Ruairi Bell heads the Protyre Motorsport UK Asphalt Rally Championship into Round 2 of the BTRDA’s sealed-surface series, the Beatson's Building Supplies Jim Clark Rally (27/28 May) – and like the vast majority of drivers it will be the first time he has contested the Scottish closed road event.
But that’s unlikely to worry Ruairi or any other driver in fact, as all are well accomplished in tackling new stages and rising to the challenge of driving flat-out over previously unchartered territory.
And to prove the point, Bell had never been to Epynt before, yet he and co-driver Max Freeman led the Nigel Ferguson Fabricators Tour of Epynt from start to finish to win and score maximum Protyre Asphalt points in their Pirelli-shod and Inspira-backed Škoda Fabia R5.
All the Protyre Asphalt rallies were new to Mark Kelly last year, yet that didn’t stop him from challenging for the title and eventually finish runner-up either. He and co-driver Neil Colman have moved up to another level this year and after finishing second on Epynt they will be looking to keep the early momentum going in their Michelin-shod and Roccia/Tile Master-backed Ford Fiesta R5+.
James Williams has quickly mastered his Hyundai Power Products-backed Hyundai i20 R5 and with Dai Roberts on the pace notes will be looking for his first overall victory in the car.
John Stone has got his Legend Fires Volkswagen Polo GTI R5 working to his liking, so much so that he’d never been so quick over Epynt and recently scored a magnificent victory on the Compbrake Motorsport Stages at Three Sisters, co-driven by his son Alex. John will be looking for another strong textbook points-scoring finish to strengthen his Protyre Asphalt Championship challenge, as he’s partnered this time by co-driver Laura Connell on the Jim Clark.
Stephen Simpson is one of the few with past Jim Clark Rally experience, having finished eighth when the event last ran in 2019. Co-driven by Neil Shanks, he returns to Berwickshire sixth in the Protyre Asphalt points table and hoping to use his knowledge of the roads to good effect in his CA1 Sport-run Tudor Glass Ford Fiesta Rally2.
Neil Roskell also contested the Jim Clark in 2019, finishing 17th overall in a Subaru Impreza. He’s gained a lot more speed and experience since then, as his drive to third overall on last year’s Protyre Asphalt Championship highlights. He wasn’t entirely happy with the set-up of his ND Civils/Collins Construction Ford Fiesta R5+ on the opening round of the 2022 series on Epynt, but he and Andrew Roughead will arrive in Scotland on the back of winning the non-championship Manx Rally and full of confidence.
Steve Wood was hampered by a handbrake issue on Epynt, but he was still the first non-R5 finisher in his City East Ford Fiesta RS WRC. Co-driven by Dale Bowen, the Welshman will be aiming to put all his closed road rallying experience to best use and continue his good start to the season in Scotland.
Craig Jones scored some wonderful results last year in a Mitsubishi Evo 9 and now the Brecon man is back in an RHL/CMJ Motors Ford Fiesta 4x4, with Ian Taylor on the notes.
Others to look out for include Dale Robinson/Stuart Loudon in their Ford Fiesta R5, Chris Ford/Matthew Daniels in a Ford Fiesta Rally2 and Paul Kirtley/David Jones in their Subaru Impreza WRC.
The Jim Clark must be one of the few UK asphalt rallies that Roger Moran hasn’t contested before, so there is no doubt that he’ll be looking forward to a new challenge. Co-driven by Den Golding he’ll be fast too, as he wheels out his Škoda Fabia R5+.
Mark Holmes set the 11th fastest time on the opening stage of last year’s Ford Parts Cheviot Stages Rally. Co-driven by Mark Perryman, he’ll be eager to keep that momentum going on his first Protyre Asphalt appearance of 2022 in his rapid Ford Fiesta S2000.
Richard Clews enjoyed a trouble-free run to class B14 victory on Epynt in his ITG Subaru Impreza STi. He’ll head to Scotland with Hamish Campbell alongside him on the pace notes. It will be an enthralling battle between them and Rob Tout/Terry Martin in their AJM Mitsubishi Evo 10 and the defending class B14 champion Adrian Spencer – who will be partnered this time by Ashley Trimble (the 2019 class B11 co-driver champion) in his RED Industries Subaru Impreza WRX.
Anth Eaton finished fourth in class and 25th overall on the 2019 Jim Clark Rally. He’s another driver who has gained a considerably more experience since then and will be hoping for an even better result when he and co-driver Ian Jackson team up in their Autotest Ford Fiesta R5+.
Darren Atkinson/Philip Sandham will be hoping to score their first class B13 and Ford Escort Challenge points of the year after retiring their Atkinsons Sandblasting/S&W Fabrication-backed Escort Mk2 on Epynt – as will class B11 stars Olly Hunter/Jonathon Kennedy, who put their Vauxhall-engined Ford Escort Mk2 off the road on Epynt.
Also aiming for Ford Escort Challenge points will be Brad Cole/Jamie Vaughan in their 2.5-litre Smith & Jones powered Hydroline Solutions Escort Mk2 and Antony Allery/Simon Dockray in their Escort RS.
Jonathan Stepney, who scored maximum B12 points on the 2019 Manx National and finished runner-up in class at the end of the season, returns in his 1.9-litre engined Griffiths/Gavin Griffiths Group-backed Peugeot 205 GTi – which is now equipped with uprated suspension and a sequential gearbox. The Perth-based Welshman will be co-driven by his stepfather Aled Davies.
It wouldn’t be a Protyre Asphalt round without Geoff Glover, who makes his 111th Championship start in his rear-wheel drive Vauxhall Astra Mk3. An oil leak in the rear diff on Epynt didn’t prevent him and co-driver Keith Barker from winning class B11, as they head to Scotland aiming to extend their advantage.
They’ll be pushed hard by the Doroszczuk brothers, as Paul and Julian make a welcome return in their self-prepared normally-aspirated Cosworth-engined Drockspeed Motorsport Escort Mk2. The 2018 class B11 champions contested the Jim Clark in 2019 and finished second in class and 37th overall – and will no doubt be pushing hard and on the rev-limiter this time too.
Lewis Gatt/Callum Young had an excellent run to class B10 victory last time out on Epynt. They had a few problems along the way, including no intercom for the first loop of stages, so will be hoping for a clean run this time in their Gatt Speed Ford Escort Mk2.
William Mains won class B9 on Epynt and will be partnered this time by Emily Easton-Page as he makes the long trip from west Wales in his WCS/Roy Thomas & Son-sponsored Vauxhall Nova.
The Jim Clark might appear to be Johnnie Mackay’s local Protyre Asphalt round, although it’s a five-hour drive from his home in Aberdeen! He did contest the event in 2019, albeit in very different cold and icy November conditions, and he and co-driver Michael Cruickshank will arrive full of confidence having won class N3 on their Epynt debut in their ISS/Kewtech Ford Fiesta ST.
Protyre Motorsport will take a large number of tyres to the Jim Clark Rally, including Pirelli, Michelin and Hoosier, and operate an on-event fitting service for all registered Championship contenders.
Special Stage TV will be live streaming the action from the event on its Facebook page. Commentary will come from former WRC reporter Mark James, who will be accompanied by the 1990 FIA Ladies World Champion, Louise Aitken-Walker MBE.
Duns Square will host the ceremonial start of the Beatson's Building Supplies Jim Clark Rally with the first car leaving the ramp at 19.00 on Friday 27 May. Crews will go straight into the 11.84-mile Longformacus moorland stage, which is tackled twice before the overnight halt back in Duns. The Jim Clark Memorial Motor Club organised event restarts at 10.00 on Saturday 28 May and whilst the day contains a further seven stages, competition in the Protyre Asphalt Championship will end at the finish line of SS8 – after two runs through the Westruther (6.22 miles), Scott’s View (6.28 miles) and Eccles (8.75 miles) stages.
