After a 20 year sabbatical the Annual Birr & District Motor Club Car Stages Rally makes a welcome return to Birr Town. In the intervening years the rally was based in Portlaoise, Roscrea, Abbeyleix, Nenagh and Templemore. In 2002 when it was last in Birr the rally was a Single Stage format and over the years it has evolved into Multi Stage Rally and a round of the Triton Showers National, Hugo Loonam Motors Cloghan Midlands East, Top Part West Coast and Sligo Pallets Border Rally Championships.
So for 2022 what can we expect? The rally has grown to be one of the most popular one-day rallies on the Irish Rally Calendar and it reflects this in the entry with over 180 entries received but only 150 cars are permitted to start. The HQ will be Garahys Garage in Fortal where Kieran and Eithne are the most splendid hosts, the Garahy’s are well known in the Transport Sector with Kieran’s Brother Michael operating a successful Tractor Sales business nearby at the Miletree.
The event main sponsor is Pat Horan Motors, the Camper Centre of Ireland based in Aglish near Borrisokane. Pat is one of the Club founding members and is married to Nuala who is a Birr Native. Pat’s Daughter Noelle is currently our very efficient club secretary and son Tristan is Assistant Clerk of the Course whilst Pat’s Brother in Law Michael Parkinson is our current Club President. In addition the Stages are being sponsored by Sola Energy Solutions and RAE Auto Factors along with the Service Park being sponsored by Transpec Truck & Trailer Spares.
The event format is two stages being run three times. The first stage is located in the Ballyboy, Knockhill, Money and Cooke areas whilst the second stage is in the Clareen, Longford, Glenafelly & Aghancon areas. Both stages provide the crews with an interesting mix of roads and terrain. The Service Park will be located in J.Grennan & Sons in Rath. Spectators intending to spectate in Service are asked to use the Parking Provided in the vicinity of Rath Village and not to park on the Household Verges or Entrances in the vicinity of the Service Park. Any illegally parked vehicles will be towed away.
Marshalls are required to run the event safely and all enthusiasts are asked to assist if possible. Contact the Chief Marshall on 087 6931369 / +353 87 6931369 for further details.

Birr & District Motor Club are excited to announce details of their upcoming Tarmac Stages Rally, a rally that will be centered on you the competitor ensuring friendliness and homely hospitality!
This year we are delighted to welcome a new title sponsor on board – Pat Horan Motors Camper Centre of Ireland. Pat is a founding member of Birr & District Motor Club and the club is very grateful for his longstanding support throughout the years. We are also thrilled to welcome onboard club members Eoghan Fogarty from RAE Autofactors and Paul O’Brien from Sola Energy Solutions as our stage sponsors.
This year we have a new Clerk of the Course, Eoin Longworth – a rallying stalwart. Eoin has taken over the reins from longstanding COC Bill Ryan and we wish him every success in the venture.
To add to the newness of the event we are using a new location. We will have a Super HQ located at Garahy’s Garage, outside of Birr, this will be our hospitality hub. A new HQ location also means new stages, some parts which have been used before throughout the years but we know competitors will relish the chance to drive the new terrain.
This year the event will be a counting round of four championships: Triton Showers National Rally Championship, Top Part West Coast National Rally Championship, Hugo Loonam Motors Midlands East Rally Championship and for the first time we welcome along Sligo Pallets Border Rally Championship.
Lastly with the new elements of our event we announce that we also have a new date – Sunday 3rd April, mark the calendars and keep an eye out for Regulations to go online very soon, we hope to open entries on Monday 7th March. Keep an eye on our website www.birrmotorclub.com or our Social Media for updates.
