Motorsport Ireland Rally Academy driver David Kelly believes his season has reached a “turning point” as he heads to the fourth round of the Junior British Rally Championship this weekend, Trackrod Rally Yorkshire [24/25 September].
Kelly, 25 from Donegal has endured a tough season behind the wheel of his Glebe Builders backed M-Sport Ford Fiesta Rally4 but a recent outing at the non-championship Bushwhacker Rally has seen an uplift in fortunes, taking a class win and top-twenty result in the process.
“It’s certainly has been a difficult year in the Junior BRC but sometimes these things just make you stronger,” says Kelly.
“I`ve been focusing on making sure our results on paper don’t have an impact on the next event and you do have to be resilient in this sport. There has been a lot of disappointment and many things out of our control, but we have kept on persevering and our Grampian [Forest Rally] result and last weekend’s class win back home was, I believe, a turning point”.
Kelly and co-driver Dean O’ Sullivan have shown impressive form on rounds of the hotly-contested Junior BRC this season as the race for the title gathers pace. The pairing were in the fight for a top result at the opening round at Oulton Park before a stage maximum put them out of contention.
A non-score in Wales would also add to the frustration but a blistering performance at the Grampian Forest Rally in August, saw a career-best second place in the Junior BRC, bettering his third spot at the Cambrian Rally in 2020. The podium place would also keep his title hopes alive thanks to the two dropped scores available, and now the progressive youngster has his sights set on another top result.
With seven points-scoring opportunities in total, the series heads into the second half of the year and the Trackrod Rally marks the first visit to the Yorkshire Forests for the BRC tour since 2013. Its ultra-fast and narrow stages are likely to be unfamiliar territory to most of the Junior BRC contenders and an 11-mile blast through the iconic Dalby Forest on Friday night offers an additional challenge.
Kelly is eager to continue his run of form in the English forests this weekend.
“I’m really looking forward to this one and I hope all of our run of bad luck is over with,” he says.
“With each passing stage the pace is getting quicker and quicker and I`m feeling more at home in the car than I`ve ever done. The Grampian and Bushwhacker results show we have the pace, we just need to keep that going into the weekend.”
“It's going to be a tough opener to the rally as I`ve never done a stage in the dark before but I`m certainly up for the challenge. It won’t be an easy battle as the Junior BRC pace is so intense, but we will give it our all from the word `go’. I must thank Brain Bonner Painting, Donegal Hardware, Cherry More Kitchens and Gortlee Tool Hire for all their work behind the scenes to make this happen for us. It should be a good one”.

Motorsport Ireland Rally Academy driver William Creighton will head to this weekend’s Trackrod Rally Yorkshire [24-25 September] with the aim of revitalising his Junior British Rally Championship title hopes.
After winning the opening round of the season at Oulton Park in May, the Moira driver has endured mixed fortunes in the hotly contested series in which he has twice been runner-up.
A non-finish on round two in Wales and having been forced to skip the third encounter in Scotland due to his Junior World Rally Championship commitments, means the Ford Fiesta Rally4 ace will need to secure a maximum haul of points if he is to remain in the fight for the coveted title.
“I don’t think there is any denying that Rally Yorkshire will be a pivotal event in our Junior British Rally Championship campaign,” says Creighton.
“We always knew that it would be a tough ask to contest both the World and British Junior championships this year and of course our focus has primarily been on the JWRC. But the BRC does mean a lot and the competition there is just as fierce, so winning a round is certainly not an easy task. With our two zero scores already this year, we need to make the most of the remaining rounds, starting with this weekend”.
Creighton and co-driver Liam Regan have been dovetailing the two Junior programmes in 2021 and has seen his experiences in the World Rally Championship net him success on the world tour.
His season has been blighted by technical issues, but despite this, Creighton has scooped fifth and sixth spots over the four events of the season. Ypres Rally Belgium would show Creighton’s pure pace, taking seven fastest stage times and stamping his mark at the top of timesheets during each leg of the rally.
But now his focus is on the iconic Yorkshire Forest stages which he will head to for the very first time and is looking forward to returning to the series on the world-renowned stages.
“I`ve never been to the Yorkshire forests before and I`d say most of the Junior’s haven't either as the last time it was in the BRC was 2013. They look very fast indeed and when you add in the eleven competitive miles in the dark on Friday night, it looks like it's going to be a real challenge. I don’t think my approach will change at all and whilst I know it’s important to get a good result, I`m not going to put any additional pressure on myself.”
Creighton has a busy schedule of events planned across Europe over the coming months, with the fifth round of the Junior BRC taking place just two weeks later on the island of Mull in Scotland. Creighton will then have to travel straight to Spain for the final round of the Junior World Rally Championship, before tackling the penultimate British Championship points counter in Wales.
“It’s crazily busy but that’s a really nice problem to have” remarks Creighton.
“We have been working hard to bring it all together and technically we have very different goals in each championship so of course there is a huge value in making both happen this year. It’s a very exciting prospect but I`m taking one event at a time at the moment, a win in Yorkshire is certainly my first goal and then we will take it from there”.

James Wilson returns to British Rally Championship action this weekend for the Trackrod Rally. Yorkshire’s gravel event is BRC's fourth round and marks the halfway point of the season.
Wilson had been hoping to prepare for the Trackrod by gaining some gravel miles on last Saturday's Bushwhacker Rally. Unfortunately turbo trouble meant his Hyundai i20 R5 was lacking power from the first stage.
With such a short space of time before his next BRC round, Wilson decided to retire the car in service after the first three stages.
“We think it was the waste gate on the turbo,” explained Wilson. “That will have caused the pressure loss and not having enough boost. The guys at Dom Buckley RSC will get to the bottom of it though.”
This weekend's Trackrod Rally is yet another new event for Wilson this year. Along with co-driver Arthur Kierans, he's determined to take as much from his year rallying throughout the UK as possible.
“I have no previous knowledge or experience of the Trackrod stages so my aims for it are like every other event this year - focus on getting the seat-time while enjoying my driving as well.
“Of course we want to increase our pace all the time but I still need much more mileage and experience of these BRC events.”
As well as adapting to new championship battles, stage locations, and surface conditions this year Wilson has been getting more comfortable behind the wheel of his R5 Hyundai. Coronavirus stopped his R5 campaign after a single outing last year so he has been enjoying his time behind the wheel in 2021.
Three exciting rallies will finish off the British Championship after the Trackrod Rally, making it a busy Autumn for Wilson to look forward to.
“The Mull Rally will be completely new for me and a lot of the other drivers. It’s definitely going to be an exciting and tough challenge on the island’s asphalt roads.
“We won the Junior BRC section of the Cambrian Rally a couple of years ago and then the Ulster Rally is very close to home which is a nice way to end the year.
“We have a couple of events coming up that I have experience of which is promising.”
Wilson is seeded eighth for the six-stage Trackrod Rally. The gravel event kicks off with a stage in the dark at 20:06 on Friday before five more tests on Saturday.

The Trackrod Rally Yorkshire this weekend is a vitally important event for 25 year old Kyle White and co-driver Sean Topping in their Junior British Rally Championship (BRC) quest. So far this season the pair have made their mark on the BRC with a sensational second position on their debut in May, followed up by a superb third place in the Welsh forests in July. This left Kyle at the top of the Junior championship table. However some ill-fortune followed on the third round in Scotland last month, when a final stage puncture rendered the Peugeot 208 incapable of making it home to the finish. A possible second place finish, disappeared like the air in the right front tyre, leaving Kyle now fourth in the title race. However when dropped scores come into play Kyle is still very much still in contention.
“The last round the Grampian, was a bit of a blow at the end, and also we had some niggling issues with the car too, which we have now focused on solving. I wasn’t happy with the way the engine was running and we discovered this past few weeks some faults in the throttle system which was giving us inconsistencies. We have put that right and the car felt really much better when we tested it last weekend on the Bushwhacker Rally” said the County Antrim driver.
Indeed Kyle and Sean in the familiar 208 R2 were leading their class after two stages on the Omagh based, Bushwhacker event. On stage three they stopped for a red flag situation, but disappointingly the nominal time awarded for that test by the organisers left them out of contention for class honours, the team headed back to the Dunmurry garage early. “We were there to test primarily, and the car really felt sharp again after the new throttle pedal and rheostat was fitted, along with the new clutch. There was no point in risking the car anymore when we could achieve nothing in the class, so it was best to head for home and save the car for this weekend.”
Once again the team are facing all new terrain for this fourth JBRC round which includes the famous Yorkshire forests such as Dalby, Cropton, Gale Rigg and Langdale. There is the added challenge of the opening eleven mile Dalby test on Friday night in darkness. “It’s almost a quarter of the mileage, and it’s been about six years since I rallied in the dark, so that really will be interesting! We need a good result this weekend but it’s hard to know if the rally will suit our car or not. The stages seem to have square corners and a lot of long straights which may suit the more powerful Rally 4 Fiesta’s in our class, but we honestly don’t know until we get out there. One thing is for sure we will be trying our best, and our car feels in the best condition it’s been in all season.”
Not to be forgotten is the big prize on offer of a drive in a four-wheel drive Hyundai i20 Rally 2, making the Junior BRC title race all the more prolific this season. The team are thankful for the assistance to date from Finaghy Cleaning & Support Services, LA Distribution NI Ltd, Gilmore Engineering Services, Jetvent Limited, Snap-On Tools and Gary White Car Sales.

The British Rally Championship moves to the north east this weekend for Trackrod Rally Yorkshire, where Keith Cronin, seeded at number five in the Hankook Tire Ford Fiesta Rally 2, hopes to be among the leading challengers on an event he previously won in 2009. It will be the first two day round of the BRC season, as the action gets under way on Friday evening with a single stage to be run after dark. Five further stages await the field on Saturday.
The route layout reads like an extract from the itinerary of the World Championship counting RAC Rally of the 1980s, featuring familiar locations such as Dalby, Gale Rigg and Langdale, and it will be the Dalby Forest test that opens the competition shortly after 8pm on Friday.
"The element of darkness certainly bring an additional challenge to all the crews, especially since most of us will not have done any night stages for some time, the most recent I did was in 2017 on the Ulster Rally," Cronin noted. "Dalby is over eleven miles in length, so there's a lot of time to be gained or lost depending on how well it goes. Some of the other stages on Saturday are also longer than those we have had so far this year, so it will be a stern task throughout. We had a test earlier in the week and made some progress, I'm hoping that will be reflected in our result at the weekend."
Despite not having won any of the rounds held to date, consistent points scoring sees Rhys Yates head the BRC leaderboard, one point ahead of Osian Pryce, with Matt Edwards having dropped to third following his retirement from the Grampian Rally with an engine misfire.
Trackrod Rally Yorkshire, which was last part of the BRC calendar in 2013, is based in the coastal town of Filey, where the Start and Finish cermonies will take place on the seafront. The event's special stages total 56 miles/90 kilometres, and following two British Championship rounds held 'behind closed doors', spectators will be admitted to the Friday night stage and some on Saturday.
Four-time champion Cronin will be guided as usual by co-driver, Mikie Galvin, in the NPL Rally Hire & Preparation tended Fiesta, which, in addition to the primary support of Hankook Tire, is also backed by M. O'Brien Group of Companies, Rentokil Initial, Cremin Coaches, Cronin's Centra, Cronin's Homevalue and M-Sport.
