Although it feels like the dust has barely settled after the Dunoon Presents... Argyll Rally, this weekend will see the KNC Groundworks Scottish Rally Championship return to the forests of the South of Scotland for round 2, the RSAC Scottish Rally. The event has attracted a bumper entry of almost 140 crews as competitors in the Scottish Rally Championship are joined by those contesting the BTRDA championship. Expect a battle between the 2 series for bragging rights.
SRC winner in Argyll Freddie Milne is adjusting to the idea of being a championship leader for the 1st time. Adopting a policy of trying not to think about it too much Freddie is concentrating on adapting to a different co-driver for the next 2 rounds. The experienced Jamie Edwards stepping in for Patrick Walsh who has other commitments.
Having learned a lot in Argyll Jock Armstrong & Cammy Fair are stepping things up further for the Scottish. Jock having his own custom seat fitted to the Fiesta and looking to have a couple of pre-event tests to get up to speed on the gravel.
Defying the seeding committee in Argyll with a fantastic podium Richard Hill already has experience on gravel in 2021 having competed on the Nicky Grist Rally in Wales. Another driver adapting to a new co-driver he knows the Scottish could prove to be a tricky event.
Stepping up to challenge the podium finishers from Argyll is another incredibly strong entry. Here are just a few names to watch out for:
Returning to the MINI WRC with which they won the 2019 Galloway Hills, perhaps the biggest attack will come from 6 times winner David Bogie & John Rowan. They have form with this car and David will be looking to add to his tally of wins and move ahead of British rally legend Roger Clark in the number of outright victories on his home event.
Garry Pearson & Niall Burns will be out in an R5. Garry looking to turn his luck around after a disastrous Argyll.
Another to suffer in Argyll, Michael Binnie & Claire Mole have found some more performance with the new car since Argyll with a different engine map. Michael really looking forward to battling with the BTRDA Evo crews.
With the Impreza still poorly after Argyll Ian Forgan & Chris Lees have stepped up into their Fiesta R5 earlier than they planned. A test run at Mach 1 went well, now it's time to see how the gravel goes.
On top of this the entry list is full of big names, Hugh Hunter, Rory Young, Bruce McCombie & John Wink to name just a few.
In the 2wd race, Mark McCulloch & Iain Wilson sit at the top of an impressive list in their big Escorts. Both drivers remarking on the strength of the field with names like Steven Wood, Keith Riddick & the junior drivers Ewan Tindall & Johnnie Mackay all looking to score big SRC points.
Added to that there are also big names from the BTRDA 2wd scene and further afield. Including Escort legend Frank Kelly, someone both Iain & Mark are really looking to try and do battle with.
Subaru Cup winner in Argyll, John O'Kane is looking forward to getting back on the gravel on his 1st ever attempt at the Scottish Rally. John really pushing the boat out and investing in the Imprezas' 1st ever set of brand new tyres. The other Cup crews had better watch out....
The current spell of dry weather looks set to continue into the weekend meaning that the crews will have to contend with hot and dusty conditions on the fast and challenging forest tracks. Unfortunately, due to ongoing Covid restrictions the organisers have confirmed the event will be a non-spectator event.

The RSAC Scottish Rally will make a welcome return to the British rallying calendar on Saturday (24 July) as the popular motorsport event marks its 75th anniversary.
As one of the longest running motorsport events in the country, the Dumfries and Galloway based gravel rally will take place for the first time since 2019, having been forced to cancel due to COVID-19 restrictions last year. Its return will see a bumper list of entries from some of the most highly-regarded rally championships in the UK, head for the event to enjoy its biggest entry since 1977.
Backed by Dumfries & Galloway Council and part of the Council’s seven ‘signature events’, which cover everything from Burns Suppers to arts festivals and World Championship Ice Hockey, the rally has attracted around 140 crews who will tackle 44 miles of classic forest stages in the region.
The event is proud to be a round of the KNC Groundworks Scottish Rally Championship, MRF Tyres BTRDA Rally Series and Mixed Surface Challenge and event organisers RSAC Motorsport have been working tirelessly to ensure the event can safely go ahead, carrying out a wealth of additional measures to overcome the challenges presented by the current pandemic.
And whilst the competitors are able to compete in some of the finest special tests in the country, sadly rally fans will have to enjoy the action from home as due to current restrictions imposed by the authorities, spectators will not be able to attend the event.
Clerk of the Course, Jonathan Lord explains;
“The organising team have been working very hard behind the scenes alongside the local authorities, regulatory bodies and governments to ensure the event can go ahead.”
“We have the perfect backdrop for yet another sensational motorsport event which our competitors can enjoy but sadly we cannot permit spectators to attend this year. We are extremely lucky to be able to host the rally, but the current guidance from Sport Scotland, landowners, Motorsport UK and the Scottish Government means we simply could not go ahead with the rally if we allow fans to attend. Restrictions are more relaxed for gated events which of course forests are not as they can be accessed from a variety of locations.“
“We are of course as disappointed as they must be and we hope they can still enjoy the action online across our social media feeds. If they ensure they abide by this requirement, we are confident we can return to a more traditional Scottish Rally in 2022.”
The action from the stages will be broadcast live on social media thanks to the Scottish Rally Championship and whilst spectators are not permitted, the cars will traverse the road section through the town of Moffett, the planned host of the start and finish ceremonies, twice during the day (approx.11:15AM to 1:30PM and 4:30PM to 6:30PM).
With previous winners of the event including World Rally Championship legends such Colin McRae, Ari Vatanen, Hannu Mikkola and Stig Blomqvist, the battle on the stages are set to be scintillating as six-time event winner David Bogie leads the field away in his John Cooper Works MINI WRC with co-driver John Rowan.
For the twenty-fourth time, the rally will be supported by Dumfries and Galloway Council. It’s understood to be the longest-running partnership between a rally and a local authority anywhere in Britain, with the Council supporting nearly one-third of all the Scottish Rallies run since the first in 1932.
Councillor Adam Wilson, the Council’s Events Champion expresses the Authorities support for the event.
“The high number of entries for the Rally show the esteem in which it is held and the drivers and their crews desire to get back to the sport they love” he said.
“Dumfries and Galloway is the perfect stage for world class motorsports – our forests and wonderful environment really lend themselves to high quality Rallies. It is hugely disappointing that spectators cannot take in the action this year but the foundations have clearly been laid for a fantastic Scottish Rally for 2021 and 2022.”

The current restrictions and variances in infections rates across the country have affected our planning with respect to spectator attendance at the 2021 event.
We have therefore taken the reluctant decision to have the event this year as a 'non-spectator' rally.
We would ask therefore that spectators stay well clear of the forests over the rally weekend and not to make travel arrangements into the area.
Any spectator activity in the stages will affect the running of the event.
We will monitor this decision regularly in discussion with colleagues at Forest and Land Scotland and Dumfries and Galloway Council.
If the situation improves we will advise spectators via our Facebook and Twitter feeds.
Regardless of any spectator availability over rally weekend, the service park will be off limits to everyone except competitors, registered service and support personnel and authorised rally officials and marshals.

"Following a meeting of the organising committee, we are happy to announce that the delayed 75th running of the RSAC Scottish Rally will be taking place on Saturday 24 July 2021 in and around Dumfries & Galloway.
The event is still subject to COVID restrictions, national guidance and regional levels arrangements. All things being equal however we look forward to welcoming competitors to the region in July.
We will keep everyone updated via the website (www.scottishrally.co.uk), Facebook & Twitter.
Regs will be published in due course on the site but registration for Marshals and Radio crews is now available."
