Livery Unveiled As Callum Prepares To Conquer Rome

Callum Devine has unveiled the livery of the Hyundai i20 R5 he will use ahead of his assault on the 2020 FIA European Rally Championship. Like many others, the 26 year old Derry driver has had to wait later than planned to get his season underway with events being rescheduled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Rally di Roma Capitale in Italy will now open the series next week.

Having shaken the establishment on his R5 debut at this level on Rally Hungary last year where he took a podium finish, Devine is determined to show that that result wasn’t a once off. “We’re really looking forward to this event”, said Devine. “Obviously it’s been quite a wait to get out competitively again so little things like getting a test in the car last week and unveiling the livery all add to the build up more than usual. The car looks great and I’m extremely thankful to all our partners. We showed in Hungary last year some of what we are capable of but this will be a very different challenge with a very strong entry. With a curtailed championship too it means more than ever we’ll have to on it from the word go.”

Devine’s involvement with the Motorsport Ireland Rally Academy and Hyundai’s Junior Driver programs has kept him busy over the last number of months as the start of the season was delayed. “Being involved in those initiatives has been a great help at keeping focused over the last while and will hopefully stand to me when we cross the start line”, Callum said. “At this level it can be those small things that make the difference. Hyundai have also carried out a lot of development on the i20 R5 too and that will be great, not just for me, but for the competitiveness of the championship.”

Callum as usual, will be partnered by Brian Hoy and the Hyundai will be run by Irish rally preparation firm, PCRS. The all Irish team will also be entered officially under the Motorsport Ireland Rally Academy banner making them eligible to score points in the ERC Teams Championship too. However, it’s another championship that Callum is eyeing up. “The ERC1 Junior Championship is undoubtedly our focus this season because of the prize fund on offer, there aren’t many prizes like that in rallying.”

Rally di Roma Capitale will begin on Friday July 24th with pre-event practice and shakdown before the event properly gets underway on Saturday which will see Callum and Brian tackle 6 stages before a further 9 stages on Sunday conclude the event. The competitive mileage of the event will come in at just under 200km which and the event is operating a very strict Covid-19 policy, with restrictions on spectators as well as all registered personnel.

ERC Rally di Roma Capitale calling for Creighton

*Motorsport Ireland Rally Academy-supported young driver up for Italian adventure
*British Junior Championship contender steps up to ERC3 Junior in Ford Fiesta R2T
*Creighton: “Rome is an opportunity and an adventure”

William Creighton is the latest young hopeful to choose the FIA European Rally Championship to build his experience at international level and show the potential that had made him the favourite to win this season’s Motorsport UK British Junior title.

Creighton, 22, has registered for FIA ERC3 Junior Championship points on Rally di Roma Capitale later this month (24-26 July), having switched to the regional contest following the cancellation of the British championship as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

He won his class on the first event of the British championship season, the Cambrian Rally in Wales in February. But with no further BRC rounds taking place, Rally di Roma Capitale provides an ideal opportunity for Creighton to step up to a higher level and complete more competitive kilometres in his new-for-2020 Ford Fiesta R2T, having rallied a Peugeot 208 R2 previously.

“At the start of the year our plan was 100 per cent the Junior BRC,” said Creighton. “It was a good start but then everything stopped due to COVID-19, unfortunately. But we’ve had a good break and now we’re busting to get back at it. Rome is an opportunity and an adventure. We’ve entered the ERC Junior Championship and the ERC is obviously up there with the world championship, but it’s hard to know what to expect until I see the entry list.”

Creighton, an ex-karter and university graduate, has made one ERC appearance to date, the 2016 Circuit of Ireland Rally. He managed a sole outing on asphalt, Ireland’s Mayo Stages in March, in his Fiesta, which is being prepared by the experienced David Greer Motorsport team.

“I suppose being from Ireland means driving well on Tarmac is no problem, but Rome will be quite different I’m sure to what we have over here,” Creighton explained. “We were always in the 208 [on asphalt] and we’ve only done a little bit of mileage in the Fiesta on Tarmac so it will take a bit of time to get bedded in. This is definitely going to be a new experience for us.”

Creighton, who will be co-driven by Irishman Liam Regan, is one of number of rising talents contesting the Pirelli-supported ERC3 Junior category on Rally di Roma Capitale. Rallye Team Spain’s Pep Bassas, Amaury Molle from Belgium, Austrian Nikolai Landa and Sweden’s Dennis Rådström are among the ERC3 Junior contingent announced so far for the all-asphalt event.

COLLABORATION OF FANS CRUCIAL FOR UNPRECEDENTED EDITION OF ERC RALLY DI ROMA CAPITALE

Fans will play a key role in the running of Rally di Roma Capitale, the planned opening round of the 2020 FIA European Rally Championship, which is scheduled to take place from 24-26 July.

Event organiser Motorsport Italia, led by Max Rendina, has worked relentlessly since lockdown measures were implemented to ensure every step possible is being taken to comply with government restrictions and other directives being put in place.

With two months to go before the event is due to take place, the eighth Rally di Roma Capitale looks very different to the previous editions in order to meet the numerous guidelines concerning the running of sporting events in Italy.

According to Motorsport Italia
“this will require some technical and logistic changes but, most importantly, great collaboration from everyone”.

In its communication issued today, the Rally di Roma Capitalie organiser stated:
“Fans and staff will have to follow the correct behaviours and implement all the needed procedures to make this event a reference on the national and international level, an example of how much the world of rallying loves this sport and is ready to accept important changes to make this discipline restart and excite our enthusiasm again.

“A web platform is being set up to allow registration and control of all the people connected to the event: organisers, teams, drivers, staff, media and fans. Through this platform, that will be made available on Tuesday 26 May at www.rallydiromacapitale.it alongside a detailed user guide, fans will have to register and specify the zones they chose to watch the rally from.

“Motorsport Italia is setting up an important check and prevention structure aiming to provide the great spectacle that the Rally di Roma Capitale is capable of. Such a great spectacle will be possible only thanks to a responsible behaviour of all of us.

“This is a cultural change that will redesign the rally world known before the COVID-19 emergency. This change will rely on all fans and enthusiasts to deliver the due efforts to allow, not only the Rally di Roma, but also the whole sector, to restart in this atypical season.”
