Motorsport Ireland, together with the RIAC are delighted to announce that we recently acquired the RPM programmes and rights for the popular TV series which ran for 23 years between 1991 and 2014, from Tyndall Productions Ltd.
The back catalogue also includes some events that pre-date the start of the RPM series and represents almost 400 programmes in total. They include the majority of the Irish Tarmac Rally Championship rounds; selected National and Northern Ireland Rallies; Retro Rallies; Rallycross; Karting; Autotesting; Hillclimbing, Trials Driving events as well as racing from Mondello, Kirkistown and the Phoenix Park.
We have begun the task of digitising each programme and will be uploading at least one programme per week going forward, premiering at 7pm on Thursday evenings. Some uploads will appear on our Facebook page but all programmes will be uploaded to our dedicated Motorsport Ireland - RIAC Youtube channel (link below) so make sure to subscribe in order to be notified of all the latest uploads.
Our first upload, now available, is the 2007 Phoenix Park Formula Libre / Formula 5 Race.
This race saw the remarkable chase of Simon McKinley in the Connaught engined Lant all the way from the back of the field to the front. The meeting, which was held in August, was backed by the Phoenix Park Drivers, and organised by the Leinster Motor Club, headed by Ann Stevens, Clerk of the Course. Racing in the park dated back to 1903, and the Irish Grand Prix was held there in 1929-1931. The Phoenix Park races were a unique sporting attraction in the capital and, according to the organisers, attracted crowds of up to 86,000.
Taken from original footage by RPM Motorsport for their television programme, don’t miss this race with the pure sound of the cars between the trees and lamp posts of this historic venue!
Next week's upload will be the full 1984 Donegal International Rally programme with original commentary by Alan ‘Plum’ Tyndall.
