British Rally Championship - Star-studded cast for Cambrian challenge

One of the most eagerly anticipated British Rally Championship seasons in recent times gets underway this weekend in the forests of North Wales as the Visit Conwy Cambrian Rally kick-starts an exciting first encounter of the new season.

The popular one-day Llandudno-based event offers up some of the best stages in the world, with classic stages like Elsi, Gwydyr, Penmachno and the Great Orme are favourites on Wales Rally GB. Now the famed forestry tracks and picturesque ribbon of Tarmac will become the gauntlet for the opening round of the BRC, as a stellar cast are set to go head-to-head against the clock over 50 competitive miles.

Getting the event underway and leading the BRC runners will be defending champion Matt Edwards in a brand-new Ford Fiesta R5 Mk2. The local star won his home rally last year and will have the honour of carrying the number one on the side of the M-Sport-backed machine on the stages just a stone throw from his Llandudno home. With 2018 co-driver Darren Garrod back in the co-driver seat, Edwards will be gunning for a hat-trick of BRC titles – a feat achieved by nobody else in the series’ 62-year history.

Whilst Edwards is keen to get off on the right foot, several drivers will be hoping to spoil his homecoming as they prepare to lock horns and do battle on the challenging Welsh gravel.

Tom Cave, who pushed Edwards on every stage on every event last season will renew his rivalry with his fellow countryman once again in 2020. The driver from Aberdyfi will pilot a Hyundai i20 R5, but this season will be joined by the vastly experienced Dale Furniss in the navigator seat. Cave has finished runner-up in in the BRC on a number of occasions and will be seeking his first title come the Galloway Hills at the end of the year.

Reigning Junior BRC Champion Josh McErlean will step-up into the BRC big time after a stellar season in the front-wheel-drive category last year. The young Irishman also won the Billy Coleman Award in 2019 and will use his prize fund to join the top-flight with British co-driver Keaton Williams as they become Cave’s stablemate in a sister Hyundai R5.

Osian Pryce makes a welcome return to the British Championship after a two-year absence. The Machynlleth man will also be behind the wheel of a Hyundai, with Noel O’Sullivan sat alongside. The duo will hope to gel quickly so they can be challenging for wins and the title this season.

After an even greater absence, Proton will return to the British Rally Championship with a factory car in the hands of Ollie Mellors and Ian Windress. Last seen in 2016 in a S2000 Proton Satria, the Malaysian brand will give its Iriz R5 a full international campaign against some strong opposition in the BRC. Mellors, a previous winner of the Cambrian Rally will be a major unknown package and could be a dark horse for a strong result this weekend.

Another driver hoping for Eastern Promise in the Proton will be James Williams from Newcastle Emlyn. Williams like Junior BRC sparring partner McErlean will step-up into the BRC top class for 2020. The Welshman will have the experienced Dai Roberts calling the notes as the partnership aim for further success after taking multiple wins in the feeder category.

FIA World Rally Championship star Rhys Yates returns for an assault on the BRC. 2020 will be a busy year for Yates and co-driver James Morgan as the crew juggle their WRC2 season with M-Sport Ford and a title tilt in their domestic series. Like Champion Edwards, Yates will hope the new Fiesta R5 will help him do the business on the Welsh stages.

Former Junior World Championship competitor Tom Williams makes a welcome return to the British series after a couple of years in the globe-trotting series. Tom has driven the first-generation Ford Fiesta R5 on several tests and show events, but this will be the first time he will drive a four-wheel-drive car in anger as Jamie Edwards comes out of retirement to help guide the young-gun through the tree-lined stages.

2019 Irish Forestry Champion Cathan McCourt and navigator Barry McNulty switch to the British series this season. Like Tom Williams, they pin their hopes on the Fiesta R5 - the car that has taken the BRC crown the past four seasons. McCourt will be looking to feed himself into the series and be ready to pounce if his more experienced rivals falter.

€60,000 up for grabs in Junior British Rally Championship

The explosive Junior British Rally Championship for drivers in front-wheel-drive R2 cars returns with a whole host of talented stars under the age of 26. For this year, the series switches to a one-make series for the Ford Fiesta R2T with a €60,000 voucher from M-Sport and Pirelli the dangling carrot for the class of 2020.

William Creighton will surely be the man with the target on his back. Twice a runner-up in the Junior BRC, he has the pace and experience to fight for the title. The Ulsterman just needs the rub of the green and he could well be a formidable force on the stages this season.

However, there will be whole host of series returnees and newcomers who will be out to spoil the Creighton party. David Kelly, Rupert Flynn, Finlay Retson, Eddie Lewis, Brian Brady and Peter Jackson will all step into a turbo-charged blue oval this season.

For the first round of the Motorsport UK National Championship, Alan Carmichael in his right-hand-drive Ford Fiesta R5 will go toe-to-toe to with young-gun George Lepley in his Mitsubishi Evo X.

McErlean: "The Cambrian Rally is the start of something very exciting”

Motorsport Ireland Billy Coleman Award winner Josh McErlean believes the opening round of the British Rally Championship is “the start of something very exciting” as he pilots a Hyundai i20 R5 in the series backed by Motorsport Ireland, Sport Ireland and the Motorsport Ireland Rally Academy.

The 20-year-old Junior British Rally Champion from Kilrea in Co. Derry will enjoy support from Hyundai Motorsport Customer Racing in a season-long campaign piloting a Philp Case Rally Sport run i20, kicking off with the Cambrian Rally in North Wales on 8th February. Regular co-driver Keaton Williams will sit alongside.

McErlean has followed the rallying ladder of progression perfectly. After starting in the Junior 1000 formula, he progressed into R2 machinery contesting selected events and a partial Junior BRC campaign in 2017 and 2018 when funds would allow. The acquisition of a Peugeot 208 R2 in 2019 saw him flourish in the series, his stunning pace and raw ability saw him net three wins to secure the title with one round remaining.

His British Rally Championship accolade also netted him a prize drive in Britain’s round of the FIA World Rally Championship, Wales Rally GB behind the wheel of a Hyundai i20 R5. Despite making his R5 and WRC debut, McErlean stamped his mark on the time sheets against some of the best drivers in the world, before being forced to retire from the event.

Another opportunity to drive the Hyundai came in December last year at the iconic Monza Rally Show in Italy. Another impressive drive, this time on his asphalt debut in the car, saw him land 18th overall and third place in the Hyundai i20 R5 Trophy.

Now, McErlean will make the full-time switch to top-flight machinery and his dream season is made possible thanks to winning the coveted Billy Coleman Award for the Motorsport Ireland Young Rally Driver of the Year. The prestigious honour has netted the youngster support to the value of €100,000 towards his 2020 season.

“It’s still sinking in to be honest” admits McErlean.

“We had a great season in 2019 and the opportunities to drive the Hyundai in Wales and Monza were fantastic. I certainly grabbed hold of both chances and made the most of them so that if that was the last chance I had to drive one, I`d be able to say I`d done my best. But winning the Billy Coleman Award changed everything for me overnight. To be involved with a full British Rally Championship programme in an R5 with support from such an iconic brand as Motorsport Ireland is incredible. It's hard to know where to start”.

The Cambrian Rally kicks off the season which will see a return to the coastal town of Llandudno and familiar North Wales stages, similar to those used on Wales Rally GB. Whilst that will aid McErlean’s baptism of front running BRC competition, he is treating it as an entirely fresh start.

“If I was going to launch my R5 career on any rally I guess this would be as good as any thanks to my previous experience here last October [at Wales Rally GB]. But I need a very measured approach to the event and find a pace that suits me and builds the experience I need to improve pace throughout the season. Either way, it’s the start of something very exciting”.

The Cambrian Rally is based in Llandudno with crews enjoying a high-speed day in the forests before a town centre finish on Saturday evening.

Creighton aiming for strong Junior BRC start in Wales

Moira rally driver William Creighton will aim to get his Junior British Rally Championship campaign off to the best possible start this weekend, as the season gets underway at the Llandudno based Cambrian Rally (8th February).

The Motorsport Ireland Billy Coleman Award nominee has made the switch to a brand new M-Sport Ford Fiesta R2 for the forthcoming season, as the Junior BRC switches to a single make formula, with the winner awarded a €60,000 prize fund towards an FIA Junior World Rally Championship programme the following year thanks to M-Sport and Pirelli.

Despite the change of machinery, Creighton will be heading to the season opener with his sights sets firmly on a solid start to his championship campaign with the goal of a “strong points haul” the main focus as he beds into the new Fiesta.

The 22-year-old from Co. Down has been involved in motorsport most of his life and after winning the Ulster Kart Championship in 2012 he graduated to rallying where he honed his competitive skills on the stages.

Success has come at all levels for the youngster, with recent accolades including class titles in the Irish Tarmac Rally Championship, the FIA Celtic Trophy and Valvoline Motorsport Ireland National Forest Rally Championship as well as taking Junior BRC runner up in 2017 and 2019.

Now Creighton and co-driver Liam Regan will face a brace of rapid young drivers in identical machinery, all vying for a top-line prize and the chance to progress onto the world’s stage the following season.

“This is probably a very different season to anything we have experienced before so I think it will need a different approach,” says Creighton.

“My previous experience of most of the events in the championship will certainly be an advantage and that should work in my favour, but truthfully I`m having to learn a brand new car and it really is remarkably different to my previous Peugeot. It’s going to be tough to be on the pace from the word go so I need to remain realistic this weekend”.

The Cambrian Rally utilises stages from Britain’s round of the World Rally Championship, Wales Rally GB. Creighton is no stranger to the tricky and often muddy forests but has only managed a short pre-event test ahead of Saturday’s rally.

“My driving style will really have to change hugely to get the most out of the car. The turbo really adds a different dimension to how you approach corners and technical sections and it’s really quite difficult to figure out just how fast you are going. It doesn’t scream at you like the Peugeot did.”

Creighton will be run by DGM Sport with backing from Creighton’s, Race and Rally and Pirelli this season and is well aware of the main aim in 2020.

“It’s a six-round season and we can’t win that here, but we can lose it. I need to approach this weekend with a level head and manage my pace well enough to get a solid haul of points. It’s no time to be a hero, but we are here for the title and that’s at the forefront of everything we do this season.”

The Cambrian Rally is based in Llandudno and sees crews contest over 43 miles in the North Wales forests.

Mellors and Proton have their sights set on British Rally Championship podium

The Proton Iriz R5 will aim for its first ever British Rally Championship podium this weekend as Ollie Mellors embarks on a season-long campaign which starts with the Cambrian Rally (8th February).

After a successful 2019 season which saw four gravel rally wins for the Iriz, Mellors is aiming to secure his first ever BRC podium for both himself and the newly FIA Homologated Proton which will be run by the Mellors Elliot Motorsport outfit and is backed by Thornbridge Brewery, Reliable Vehicle Logistics and Michelin this season.

The Malaysian car firm has a strong affinity with the British Championship which stretches back to the late 1990’s before mounting a strong World Rally Championship campaign in the 2000’s run by the Derbyshire outfit.

The Proton Satria S2000 enjoyed WRC success in 2012 before Mellors contested the rejuvenated BRC in 2016. Now, returning with a brand-new model, he feels the time is right to introduce the Iriz to the British Championship.

“We have spent a good three years developing the Iriz into a very strong and proven package which has received some fantastic feedback from leading current drivers and legends such as two-time World Rally Champion Marcus Gronholm” he says.

“I’ve always been confident in the car’s ability and last year’s success reinforced that for both me and the team. We felt 2020 was the right time to launch the Iriz into the BRC where is can really compare against the current crop of machinery that is out there today. We are not hiding the fact that the WRC is where we want to be with the Proton and the British Championship should provide a great steppingstone for that goal”.

Mellors is no stranger to the opening round of the season, having won the Llandudno based event in 2018 with the then development Iriz. But despite his experience, believes that a podium would be a `big ask`.

“If you look at the entry list you can see there are some of the quickest drivers in Europe in the top ten right now so a maiden BRC win would really be a tall order. I must be realistic about this, it has been a few years since I’ve made my own notes and done a recce as well as going head to head with these guys, I’m the underdog here really. But I’ve got the confidence in the car that it’s capable and if we could gain sight of a podium I`d be very happy”.

Mellors and co-driver Ian Windress will also be joined by rapid Junior BRC ace James Williams and co-driver Dai Roberts who join the squad for the first time. Williams, making his R5 debut will drive the sister car, making a two-car team for the opener in North Wales.

Williams will drive the Iriz after battling for Junior BRC honours in front wheel drive machinery in 2019. After a brief test in Northern Ireland, Williams will benefit from a pre-event gravel session before launching into the event on Saturday.

The Cambrian rally takes crews into the heart of the North Wales forests during Saturday, similar to those used on Wales Rally GB before the podium celebrations in Llandudno later that afternoon.

Cambrian Calling As Brady Begins British Championship Campaign

24-year-old Brian Brady will get his 2020 season underway this weekend as he competes in his first event outside the island of Ireland, the Visit Conwy Cambrian Rally. The rally is the first round of the Junior British Rally Championship (JBRC) which will be Brady’s focus this season. Brady is the reigning Motorsport Ireland Junior Rally Series Champion, a new dual surface championship, and is aiming to build on his performances to date as he makes the step up to events outside Ireland.

Speaking ahead of this weekend Brady said;
“We were fortunate that our championship win last year brought with it a prize fund which has made it possible, along with loyal sponsors, for me to make this step up. Last year was my first year driving on loose surface events, this year will be my first competing outside Ireland. The structure of the championship, with four of the six events being on tarmac, will allow me to play to my strengths on tarmac while continuing to learn on gravel. The stages on the Cambrian are world class and I can’t wait to get started.”

This year’s Junior British Rally Championship will benefit from an increases with M-Sport and global tyre manufacturer Pirelli, who will provide a career changing €60,000 to put towards a drive in the Junior World Rally Championship (JWRC). The collaboration also means that the JBRC switches will become a one-make Ford Fiesta R2T championship – providing a perfect step for drivers aspiring to join the JWRC as the world series uses identical one-litre turbo-charged machines. Indeed it was the one-make factor that drew Brady to the series as the Meath man explains; “It’s a level playing field.

We’re in the same cars, on the same stages, with the same tyres, so it’s the driver that will make the difference, there are no excuses. Irish drivers have always shown well in one-make series in the past and I’m hoping I can do the same.” Brady’s JBRC attempt will feature an all Irish team with well known Irish rally preparation company C-Sport running the car and Cork co-driver Eamonn Creedon on the pacenotes. Both Brian and Eamonn are included in the Motorsport Ireland Rally Academy for 2020.

EDSL Sport to field three-car Cambrian Rally squad

Leading build and preparations experts EDSL Sport will head to this weekend’s Visit Conwy Cambrian Rally with a three-car squad, running a brace of new-generation M-Sport Ford Fiesta R2’s at the British Rally Championship and BTRDA Rally series opener in Llandudno (8th February).

The Hampshire based firm will run the latest specification MK8 1.0litre EcoBoost Ford Fiesta R2T’s for Junior British rally Championship title protagonist, rapid Irishman Brian Brady at the season opener. He will be joined by 2019 Cadet Cup champion Rupert Flynn who steps into the Junior BRC for the first time, as well as youngster Elliot Payne who will contest the BTRDA category of the event.

After becoming official M-Sport Poland re-sellers in 2018, the firm became responsible for Fiesta parts, accessories and technical support for the UK and Ireland. That led to the team running many of the 2019 Junior BRC title fighters in their new Fiesta R2 hire cars. With progressive drivers such as James Williams, Marty Gallagher and Jordan Hone on their books last season, the all-new Fiesta offered a competitive chance at scooping the overall victory.

The Junior British rally Championship takes on a new look for 2020, with a switch to a single make format and the M-Sport Fiesta being chosen for Junior drivers to develop their skills. They will be battling for a €60,000 prize fund towards a 2021 campaign in the FIA Junior World Rally Championship thanks to M-Sport and Pirelli, one of the biggest prizes in modern rallying with EDSL Sport at the heart of the battle for the honours.

Making their return to the Junior BRC for a second season is an exciting prospect for Team Principle Alex Waterman.

“We are delighted to be returning to the British Championship this year and it’s great to have Brian [Brady] on board with us for the Cambrian Rally alongside Rupert, both of which will be driving the latest specification M-Sport Fiesta’s,” he says.

“With the shift into Ford Fiesta’s for this season it means we are in the best position yet with our cars and as well as running our hire and customer cars, we will be attending all rounds with a large parts truck and offering technical support where required. That applies to crews outside of the team too.”

Their newest signing, 2017 Irish Junior Rally Champion Brian Brady brings the most experience to the team in Wales. Despite the Irishman never stepping off the island to compete, Brady is one of the fastest mixed-surface young pilots, campaigning a Honda Civic to great success over the last three seasons.

“You only have to look at Brian’s results to see that he is a very capable driver on both gravel and asphalt” says Waterman.

“Of course, the Honda he has been driving is very different to the Fiesta he will be in this weekend, but it won’t take him too long to adjust. Getting used to the turbocharged one-litre will be the biggest challenge but I’m confident that he will be one to watch on the gravel, despite being his first time in the Welsh forests.”

EDSL Sport now has three 2019 specification Fiesta R2’s available and Waterman is looking forward to getting the season underway.

“The Cambrian Rally should be interesting as it’s more of a sprint than any other in the championship”.

“We will be using all of our past experiences in the BRC and BTRDA to hopefully give our crews the best possible chance. It may be a short rally, but the stages are tricky and I think the battle for the top Junior spot will be a close run thing this season, I`m excited to see how our drivers will perform”.

The Cambrian Rally offers over 43 miles of special stages in the North Wales forests during Saturday, spread across seven tests including the challenging Great Orme asphalt blast. After a tough day in the forests, crews will spray the champagne on the Llandudno promenade later that afternoon.

Kelly Ready for British Rally Championship debut

David Kelly this weekend makes the trip to the Cambrian Rally in North Wales for the first round of the British Rally Championship. This will be Kelly’s first year competing in the BRC.

Hoping to gather as much experience as possible on the first round Kelly plans to use the event to get seat time and hopefully get some valuable points on the board. “It will be our first event in the new R2T19 Fiesta, with the event being on gravel it will be all learning from the word go. Our plan is to pace ourselves and gather as much information on the new car as we can. I have no doubt that the pace will fierce at the top but we will just take it stage by stage. It’s a long year!”

David will be competing for the first time in his newly acquired Ford Fiesta R2T19. He has completed a limited amount of testing in the new car but he has assured us that there is nothing like an actual stage to get used to the car. This car has the latest technology and was developed by leading Motorsport Manufacturer M-Sport in Poland.

Over 100 crews will this weekend travel from all corners of Europe to Wales for the opening round. The event starts on Friday when all the crews will complete recce to adjust their pace notes. The first car leaves the start ramp at 9.00am on Saturday morning. Crews tackle 7 stages including a 15 mile gravel stage. The event is due to finish at 4pm on Saturday afternoon.

The winner of the BRC Junior series is eligible for a €60,000 prize fund toward a Junior World Rally Championship drive in 2021.

“I just want to thank all my sponsors for making this all possible. Also the support and tuition I have received through the Motorsport Ireland Rally Academy is helping my progression hugely. Focusing on my diet and fitness is really benefiting my preparation for the event. Now to get to the stages and see what the new car is all about” Kelly remarked.
