Killarney and District Motor Club held the official launch to the Rentokil Initial Killarney Historic Rally on Sunday in the Gleneagle Hotel Killarney. There were some beautiful historic rally cars on display and a large crowd in attendance. Officials, Organisers, Competitors, Sponsors, distinguished guest speakers, WRC Co Driver Paul Nagle and Dignitaries of Killarney town were on hand to support the event.

MC on the night was non-other than Mike Marshall, he introduced Niall Kelleher Mayor of Kerry County Council who spoke of how important the rally is to Killarney Town, bringing a welcomed revenue boost to the local economy. Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Brendan Griffin TD spoke on the commitment and dedication of the voluntary club members involved and their ability to host an event of this magnitude every year. Other guest speakers included Michael Gleeson (Mayor of Killarney) Paul Sherry ( President of Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce) Michael O’Mahoney of Rentokil Initial and Paul Nagle who spoke of the honour and pride having a cup in memory of his late father Maurice.

Killarney and District Motor Club announced details of this year’s Rentokil Initial Killarney Historic Stages Rally. Ireland’s only event to cater solely for historic rally cars and is set to run on Saturday the 30thNovember.

The rally will count as
    • First round of the 2020 Irish Tarmac Historic Rally Championship.
    • Final round of the 2019 Plasticbags.ie - Southern Four Rally Championship.
    • Final round of the 2019 Moriarty’s Centra - Kingdom of Kerry Rally Championship.
    • Final round of The 2019 HRCR West Wales Rally Spares - Stage Masters Challenge.
Killarney and District Motor Club are pleased to announce the appointment of their new clerk of the course for the Killarney Historic Rally 2019 and the experienced Darren McCormick takes charge for his first year. History is being made as Darren is the first second-generation clerk in the 42-year history of the club.

Darren is following in the footsteps of his father Gary who clerked the rally three times between 1999 and 2001. Growing up around KDMC Club events, Darren has taken on every role within the club from marshalling, to equipment officer, chief marshal, club safety officer and deputy clerk of the course in the past. This year Darren has stepped up to the mark and will take charge of one the club’s most prestigious rallies.

Darren has stood back and put his own stamp on this year’s event, specifically building this year’s rally around the competitor and in doing so he has selected the best classic stages available around Killarney Town, offering the competitor 120Km of 8 special stages, followed by short road Km’s which allows for an easy recce, the format of stages will be 3 stages repeated twice and two special 15km stages run within close proximity to Killarney town, note that all stages are to be Run in daylight this year, Centralised service will be at Liebherr container crane Factory Fossa and the Gleneagle Hotel once again as our Rally HQ.

The rally will be backed by Rentokil Initial Ireland as main title sponsor for the 7th consecutive year.

Rentokil Initial managing director Michael O'Mahoney said:
“On behalf of Rentokil Initial I am once again delighted to be associated with this year’s Killarney Historic Rally. The event has grown from strength to strength and is a phenomenal success. Our desire to support the local community and businesses that have supported Rentokil Initial, so loyally over the many years is the reason why we are once again involved with Irelands most prestigious Rally”.

Including additional support from Cormac Casey of KC Print and Killarney Advertiser plus the Gleneagle Hotel Group, who have been supporters of the rally for many years and continue as Associate Sponsors.

The event, which provides a welcome end of season boost to Ireland’s tourism capital and is worth millions to the local economy, will once again be hosted at the Gleneagle Hotel as Rally Headquarters, along with supplying some great rally accommodation packages throughout the weekend.

We are delighted to confirm extensive TV coverage of this year’s event. A one hour production by Mick Bracken of 'On The Limit Sports', to be televised on RTE, TG4, Eir Sport, Motors TV and Skysports throughout the Christmas period. This is a huge attraction to the event and is very beneficial to our Sponsors, Town and Rally. The rally starts on Friday evening with a Ceremonial start in main street Killarney at 7pm. The real action gets underway on Saturday morning with the iconic “Molls Gap”, often rated by rally drivers as being the best and one of the most-challenging stages in the world. Followed by the mountainous Beallaghbeama Pass and the fast flowing Shanera stage, after which the crews head into service at Liebherr Container cranes Killarney for a well earned service break. The crews then repeat this loop for a second time and into service once again. For the evening loop we have strategically designed a new version of the Rockfield and Coolick stages to make them spectator friendly and we would like to invite the public rally fans of Killarney Town to come out to witness this great spectacle, wonderful atmosphere and support your local hero’s as they contest the challenging stages.

The Maurice Nagle Perpetual Cup

The late, great Maurice Nagle will be forever remembered on the Killarney Historic Rally. Maurice, one of the leading lights of Killarney and District Motor Club passed away last year after an illness. He was one of the greatest workers in the club but his true legacy is the Killarney Historic Rally. Back in 1996, a few years after the Rally of the Lakes switched from its early December date to its now traditional May Bank Holiday slot, Maurice identified a gap in the rally calendar and set about running the first Killarney Historic Rally.

The event has grown in stature, the only rally of its kind in Ireland regularly attracts a capacity entry and is now a central piece of Irish Motorsport and the Christmas in Killarney Festival. Shortly after Maurice’s passing, his friends, led by well-known rally preparation expert Dan Cashman set about fundraising for the creation of the Maurice Nagle Perpetual Trophy. It will be presented to the overall winner of the Historic Rally.

The trophy was unveiled for the first-time last Friday night, when Dan and his group of supporters presented the trophy to the Nagle family at a special function in Charlie Foley’s Bar in Killarney. Such was the support for the trophy, Dan raised over 3,500 euro in surplus funds and this extra cash was presented to the Cork-Kerry Cancer Bus. The Race of Champions

It is fair to say that the “Race of Champions” is on in Killarney this November. Among the main attractions of this year’s event will be World Rally Driver Craig Breenwho will be debuting his newly acquired Viking Motorsport prepared Ford Escort RS 1800. Craig will be teaming up once again with Paul Nagle on the notes.

Leading entries in the Historic section include Local man Robert Duggan and Dublin’s Robert Barrable both who are hiring ultimate Ford Escort BDA rally cars from the UK. Last year’s winner Owen Murphy has also made the move from his reliable Talbot Sunbeam to the more powerful Ford Escort BDA. The 2019 Irish Forestry Champion Cathan McCourt returns, along with the extremely popular Adrian Hetherington.Martin Doherty makes to long trip from Donegal to take on the best of both British & Irish Historic Rallying.

Rally Legend Jimmy McRae returns to Killarney, the 5 times British Rally Champion and 7 times winner of The Circuit of Ireland is looking forward to the event driving his Vauxhall Firenza Can-Am. Irish Historic Rally Champion 2019 Duncan Williams will be match fit and well in the running for overall honours. We are also delighted to announce that Jason Pritchardmakes his Killarney debut, the 3 times British Historic Rally champion and also British National Rally Champion should be a massive crowd attraction to the event in his 2.5Litre Modified Escort. Other top names include Andy Johnston, John Keatley and Neill Williams.

Top Competitors in the Modified Section include two Damien Tourish and Christopher Armstrong. Along with Gary Kiernan, Tomas Davies, Daragh O’Riordan, Enda O’Brien, Wesley Patterson, Martin McGee, Ryan Loughran, David Condell.

Leading Locals

Top Local Historic competitors include the Falveys from Rathmore who are out in force once again.
Mark is in his ex-Billy Coleman Rs1600 Escort Mk1 and Todd in his ex- Ernest Kidney RS1800. Alan Ring is his beautifully prepared BMW M3.The experienced Pat Looney who is a previous Post Historic category winner teams up once again with Ronald Riordan on the notes. Bantry’s Denis Cronin who is also a previous Rally of the Lakes winner. Rathmore’s Donal O’Connor will be pushing hard for top local honour in his Ford Escort mark 1, Glenflesk’s Diarmuid Lynch is also a category winner here in the past along with Aidan Kennedy will head the local Mini Cooper line up.

Leading local crews in the Modified category include the pacesetter last year Colin O’Donoghue along with his father Kevin in his unique BMW M3. Denis Hickey and Dave Slattery are both on top form, the Rentokil Initial Backed Team of Charlie and Johnny Hickey, Tadhg O’Sullivan has a new engine fitted for this one, along with the young guns Conor Murphy, Sean Kerins, Andrew Duggan and Aidan Buckley who have shown some great speed and ability. Not to mind the Local class 3 pinto battle between Con Lucey, Seanie Hickey & Cyril Wharton. Others include: Ray O’Neill, Noel O’ Sullivan, Bob Moran, Paudie O’Callaghan, Donal Flynn and Kevin O’Sullivan.

It is fair to say that the “Best of the Best” are coming to Killarney for the final battle of the year.
