Counting Round - 2019 Irish Rallycross Championship

Retro Cars star at biggest Mondello Park Rallycross of the season

Posted: July 17, 2019 10:35 AM

The Parts for Cars Irish Rallycross Championship is preparing for its biggest event of the season as it joins the Drift Games Extreme Championship as part of Mondello Park's 'Retro Mania' this coming weekend, July 20th and 21st. In keeping with the theme of the event, the regular championship line-up will be boosted by a grid of Retro Rallycross cars for the first time.

Having already sampled the standard Mondello Park Rallycross circuit in both clockwise and anti-clockwise versions, and paid a visit to Tynagh, this weekends event will see the drivers tackle the fourth different circuit in four events. The latest layout will see the reversed Mondello Park track altered to take the cars through a sharp left turn, following Rallycross Two, around Bridgestone corner in the correct direction, before turning sharp right and travel ling along the back of the paddock to turn left onto the loose surface area in front of the Grandstand. This layout brings the start line into the main spectating area which will also be the centre of the action for the Drift event.

Another new aspect of this weekends Round 4 will be the timetable, which will run over two days. All of the Rallycross heats, including the Retro cars will run on Saturday from 10:00 until lunchtime. The finals will then take place on Sunday morning with the Rallycross finals running from 09:00 to 13:00 with a break for Drift Games Practice.

The main focus of the weekend for many spectators will be the first Irish Retro Rallycross event. A strong entry has been lined up for the inaugural run for the class, with more than ten cars expected to be on show. A varied line-up has been assembled including the ever popular MK 2 Escort, Vauxhall Astras and Novas, an Austin Metro, a Peugeot 205 and a variety of Volkswagen Golfs. The retro class will run separately from the other classes with its own heats and finals and with many experienced drivers returning for the event the class is expected to be extremely competitive.

In the regular championship classes, reigning champion Derek Tohill will be out once again in his Fiesta Supercar, fresh from his British Championship victory. Joining him on the Supercar grid will be his UK championship rival Mike Manning with his similar Fiesta and their main opposition should come from former champion Noel Greene and his Mitsubishi. An excellent sixteen car entry has been attracted in the Modified class with the next biggest grid being provided by the Junior Rallycross drivers.

The event will also feature two days of Drift Games Extreme action beginning with qualifying on Saturday afternoon and the full Round 3 of the championship on Sunday. Off track there will be loads of Retro cars on show as well as a visit by Supercars from the Cannon run and loads of eighties and nineties themed activities.

Tickets for Round 4 of the Irish Rallycross Championship at Retro Mania are available from the Mondello Park web site and all admission tickets include the Irish Drift Championship and the Retro Mania car show.

Irish Rallycross Championship Round 4 Retro Mania!

Posted: July 3, 2019 6:57 AM

After a short break, the PartsforCars Irish Rallycross Championship will burst back into life on Saturday & Sunday, July 20th & 21st at Mondello Park. Following its massive success last year the IRX will once again team up with Drift Games for their Retromania Festival.

To keep with the Retro theme set out by Drift Games the IRX are delighted to announce that there will be a demo Retro Rallycross category for the event. This free entry section of the event will give an opportunity for all the Retro Rallycross machines that have not seen the track in many years to come out of hibernation. We hope a few iconic machines will be hitting the track!

The schedule will be jam-packed of action as all the Rallycross classes and the best drifters in Ireland take to the track over the two days. On Saturday the Rallycross heats will take place leaving time on Sunday to hold the finals and also the reruns of the finals from the opening round that was postponed due to snow.

This means that spectators are in for a real treat of non-stop motorsport action! Apart from the on-track action, the Retromania festival has so much more to see, 80’s throwback party, retro gaming, 90’s tribute bands and loads of retro cars on display its a festival any petrolhead can enjoy!

After the opening round of the IRX championship was curtailed due to snow, standings are after round 2 in Tynagh and round 3 in Mondello Park. Noel Greene leads the way in his Mitsubishi Mirage but Derek Tohill is hot on his heels after he missed round 2, but won round 3. Full championship standings will be published in the coming weeks. Tommy Graham made a welcome return to the IRX at round 3 where he gave Tohill a good fight for the victory, we hope to see him back out for the Retromania event. There has also been a lot of interest in the event from competitors in the UK so watch this space!
