Meirion Evans has swapped his Hyundai for a ŠKODA Fabia R5 for tomorrow’s Carryduff Forklift Down Rally, after the i20 R5 he was initially planning to drive was damaged in a fire on the Ypres Rally.
After a short test in the car earlier this week, Round 5 of the Protyre Motorsport UK Asphalt Rally Championship will be the young Welshman’s first rally in a Fabia R5. Jonathan Jackson will co-drive in the ex-Jan Kopecky machine.
Meirion’s father Melvyn Evans will also drive a ŠKODA Fabia R5, both run by the family’s Llanwrda-based Melvyn Evans Motorsport stable. He contested the Circuit of Munster last month in the car, so already has a good feel for how it performs on closed Irish lanes. That said, performing well in a brand new car is never a problem for Melvyn, as he picked up second place Asphalt Rally Championship points on the Down Rally last year in his first event in a Fiesta WRC. He’ll be co-driven tomorrow by Aled Davies.
“We just did a small run in the ŠKODA at an airfield to tune myself in, so it will take a bit of adapting to down a country lane,” said Meirion. “It’s a good chance for me to compare the Fabia R5 to the Hyundai i20 R5, and I’m looking forward to it.”
Recce and scrutineering takes place today, while the Down Rally starts from the EIKON Centre in Lisburn at 08.15 tomorrow. The event contains 11 stages, all situated to the south of Lisburn, with two runs over Lough Erne, Hamilton’s Folly North, Hamilton’s Folly South and the EIKON spectator stage, and three runs over the Drumaknocken test. The middle 23.2 mile loop of the event contains five stages between service, while the final 16.85 mile loop contains a re-run of the three longest stages. The event finishes back at the EIKON Centre at 17.01.

The Eikon Exhibition Centre will again host our Service Park where motorsport fans can get up close to some of the latest rallying machinery and watch while mechanics check for damage and prepare the car for the next loop of stages. As the clock ticks down, engineers are under pressure to make decisions on the best set up for the car not to mention tyre choices in our every changeable climate.
Also based at the Balmoral Park, and back by popular demand, is our G Design Engineering Spectator Power Stage. Watch as competitors tackle the tight and twisty half mile stage at times just metres away from our spectator viewing areas! A rally cannot be won on a spectator stage but one wrong move, and it can certainly be lost!
As well as all the action happening outside, inside we have free Bouncy Castles and Face Painting for our younger visitors. Our Big Screen will keep you up to date with live results and will be showing action from the closed road stages. Vehicles from several Northern Ireland car clubs will form a static car display, you can have a browse through our Official Merchandising, or if you and your family need refuelling, hot food, tea and coffee will be available to purchase.
Our chosen charity this year is Aware, a charity that works exclusively with people affected by depression in Northern Ireland. They will be around the Eikon Centre all day on Saturday and we hope you will call over and see them and pick up some information.
All our activities based at the Eikon Exhibition Centre and Balmoral Park are both family friendly and accessible to wheelchair users and those with limited mobility.
Adult Admission £10 (free if programme has already been purchased)

Damian Cole is looking to extend his lead in the Protyre Motorsport UK Asphalt Rally Championship when he takes his Get Connected/Energizer-backed Ford Fiesta WRC to the Carryduff Forklift Down Rally (20 July) – but he’ll have plenty of tough opposition aiming to deny him the maximum haul of points he’s searching for, most notably from John Stone (Fiesta WRC) and from an array of top R5-spec cars driven by the likes of Melvyn Evans (ŠKODA Fabia R5), Meirion Evans (Hyundai i20 R5), Alan Kirkaldy (Fiesta R5) and Oli Hopkins (Mitsubishi Mirage).
Six time champion Cole has been super consistent so far this season, with a second placed points finish on the opening Rallynuts National Tour of Epynt Rally and a pair of fifth-placed points scored on the Masterpixel Media Manx National Rally. With maximum points scored on the most recent Rally van Wervik, the Abergavenny ace knows he now has to better his Isle of Man results, as the two scores to drop rule will soon come into play. Having been co-driven by Shelley Rogerson, Max Freeman and Dale Bowen so far this season, Cole will have Paul Spooner on the notes in Northern Ireland.
With Cole’s main title rival Jason Pritchard unable to contest the Down Rally, John Stone/Jack Morton have a great opportunity to rocket up the points table in their Legend Fires-backed Fiesta WRC. Having taken second placed points last time out on Belgium, the Blackburn driver is on great form and another good result in his ex-Mikko Hirvonen Ford will highlight his status as a serious title challenger.
Melvyn Evans picked up the Asphalt series silverware last year on the Down Rally in what was his first event in a Fiesta WRC. Co-driven by Aled Davies, the Welshman returns again this year, but this time in a newly acquired ŠKODA Fabia R5. His son Meirion Evans is contesting the Irish Tarmac Championship and together with Jonathan Jackson is more than match-ready in his Hyundai i20 R5. It might be their first appearance in the Asphalt series this season, but both the Melvyn Evans Motorsport crews will be challenging for top points.
Alan Kirkaldy arrives in Lisburn leading the R5 category in his Cairnsmill Caravan Park Fiesta R5. The St Andrews pilot is also a magnificent third in the overall drivers’ points standings and is keen to defend that position. He’ll be co-driven as usual by Cameron Fair. Chris Ford is second in the R5 table after a good season so far in his Century Autosport Fiesta R5. Partnered by Neil Colman, another strong result like he had last time out in Belgium (where he scored points for finishing sixth) will do his title challenge no harm at all.
For giant-killing potential, look no further than Wayne Sisson. On paper, his immaculate AMS Arnside Motorsport Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X should be no match for the WRC and R5 cars, but that has never stopped the Carnforth driver exceeding expectations. He even finished third in the Asphalt points on the Down Rally last year, despite a high-speed off through a fence. This time Sisson will be co-driven by Michael Hendry.
On the subject of flying Mitsubishis, Oli Hopkins/Ian Taylor are back in their Hopkins Motorsport-owned Mirage after showing considerable speed on Epynt and on the Isle of Man. Always fast on closed road events, another good result will greatly improved the Bristol driver’s current ninth place in the overall standings, whilst he is also second, just behind Sisson, in the battle for class B14 honours.
Last year Richard Clews was co-driven on the Down Rally by British Rally champion driver Matt Edwards, but their great run was curtailed by overheating problems. This year the Coventry driver will be back co-driven by Hamish Campbell, and hoping for more luck in his smart ITG Air Filters Subaru Impreza.
The close class battle continues in B10, where Rhidian Daniels/Tomos Whittle (Citroën C1 Max) lead Adrian Drury/Cat Lund (Drury Deliveries Peugeot 106 GTi) by just nine points.
After four rounds, just one point separates Geoff Glover and John Devlin in class B11. Co-driven as usual by Keith Barker, Glover will be at the wheel of his rear-wheel drive Astra, which didn’t like the bumpy roads on its first rally in Northern Ireland last year, but which scored a very good result nonetheless. Devlin meanwhile took maximum class points both times on the double-header Manx National Rally, despite contesting the event for the first time as a driver. This time the Banbridge man will be co-driven by John McCarthy in his rapid Escort Mk2. Also in a Chesterfield Transporters-backed Escort Mk2 are Ross Brusby/Dave Robson.
Meanwhile defending B12 champions Mike Pugsley/Marc Clatworthy will be aiming to move one step closer to retaining their title in their 1974 Escort Mk1 RS2000, while a good result in their Ray Thomas & Sons/WCS Environmental-backed Vauxhall Nova will give Will Mains/Claire Williams one hand on the 1400S trophy.
On his first Championship appearance since 2014, Darren Atkinson won the B13 class on both the Friday and Saturday legs on the Isle of Man in his Atkinsons Sandblasting/Dennison Trailers/S&W Fabrication-backed Escort Mk2. He then won the class again in Belgium. Co-driven by Phil Sandham, the Lancaster driver will be aiming to extend his class lead, hold onto his fourth place in the overall driver standings and challenge for that prestigious top two-wheel drive finishing position.
Special Stage will be in Northern Ireland with a two camera crew team and hi-tech equipment to broadcast the action LIVE on its Facebook page. Howard Davies and Gemma Watson will be commentating from the many magnificent vantage points the event has to offer.
Organised by Rathfriland MC and Ballynahinch & DMC, the Carryduff Folklift Down Rally contains a total of 11 special stages covering 55 stage miles on closed roads in County Down. Starting at 08.30, the event includes four separate closed road stages before the finish ceremony at 17.00. Rally headquarters and the service area are based at the EIKON Centre in Lisburn.
Following the start of the Carryduff Folklift Down Rally, registrations will close for the 2019 Protyre Motorsport UK Asphalt Rally Championship.

Entries have closed, seeding is complete and our Deputy COC Brian Crawford has found a little time in his packed schedule to review what can only be described as a spectacular entry list. We asked him to give us a teaser of some of the names that stood out for him.
"Yet again, our entry list is overflowing. A huge thank you to all of the competitors who have entered the 2019 Carryduff Forklift Down Rally. We thought we did something pretty special last year, but we think that 2019 may just top this and the returning talent shows just how much they enjoyed last year. The introduction of a third championship has added even more variety with historic Minis travelling from near and far to take on the challenging County Down stages. Martin Melling and Barry Stenhouse will be hoping to pick up some points for the FUCHS Lubricants Classic Mini Challenge."
"We welcome back Jonny Greer and Kirsty Riddick, our 2018 winners, to battle to defend their title in a different car than last year, the Fiesta R5. One team that will be battling Jonny and Kirsty for the win will be reigning British Champion Matt Edward's and Paul Norris. It's great to attract that calibre of driver to the event. Matt navigated on last years events and couldn't wait to get back to take on the challenge of the Down roads in the driver's seat."
"From Wales we look forward to welcoming Melvyn and Merrion Evans back to the event. This year will Merrion and Jonathan Jackson surpass his Father and Aled Davies again? It will be interesting to see who fairs better in the family battle of youth vs experience. The Evans aren't the only teams making it a family battle. Bushmills brothers Brian McFall with Matthew McKenna and Colm McFall with Ronnie Craig, will both be out in the Mitsubishi Evos. It will be interesting to see how Brian in the Evo 10 will fair against big brother Colm in the Evo 9. "
"In the McGrady Insurance Northern Ireland Championship entries we have Derek McGeehan and his son Mark who will be looking to further secure their lead in the championship. Looking for points will also be Derek McGarrity with Paddy Robinson and Stephen Wright. Championship sponsor Fintan McGrady and Ray Fitzpatrick will also be out in the Escort "
"Other local crews include Rathfriland Motorclub members Frank McMullan and Paul Killen. From Ballynahinch there will be a lot of motorclub rivalry but brothers Johnny Morrow and Philip Morrow who are only 3 minutes from the Eikon stage, will certainly be entertaining"
"We are also delighted to welcome Jon Armstrong in the Mini Countryman. A man with great talent in virtual rallying he will certainly be one to watch on the tarmac."
"The Protyre Motorsport UK Asphalt Championship contenders are back this year. Chris Wheeler and Shaun Layland are back in the Citroen while Wayne Sisson and Michael Hendry are back in the Evo 10."
"Its a stellar entry and we look forward to seeing all of the Crews take on the event"

As you can imagine, the Carryduff Forklift Down Rally Team have had a busy week since our entries opened at 8pm last Tuesday. Our first confirmation email was sent out at just 8.02pm.
Entry Secretary, David Meeke confirmed,
"after the initial rush, entries have continued to arrive at a slow but fairly steady pace. The first one hundred will be guaranteed a start on the 20th July and we thank all crews already entered for the enthusiasm that they have for our event.
"amongst the entries received so far, we are delighted to have teams from all three championships guaranteed a start on the rally. These crews aren't just fast on the stages, they obviously also have a talent for typing at speed."
As we continue to attract a vibrant collection of crews set to star on the roads of County Down, we hope you are looking forward to the 20th July as much as we are. Keep an eye on our Facebook, Instagram and Twitter pages in the coming weeks and we'll do our best to keep you updated!

With entries opening in less than two weeks, the Carryduff Forklift Down Rally are looking forward to welcoming competitors from a third championship to Northern Ireland.
In addition to the returning McGrady Insurance Northern Ireland Rally Championship and the Protyre Asphalt Rally Championship, the July event will also host a round of the FUCHS Lubricants Classic Mini Challenge.
Set up to fill a gap left by other events, the FUCHS Lubricants Classic Mini Challenge will take on the County Down Stages as round six of an eight round calendar.
Deputy Clerk of the Course, Brian Crawford commented, "our Service Park will again be based at the Eikon Centre near Lisburn and it'll be great to welcome all our competitors back to this great facility. We are looking forward to seeing some of these beautiful classic minis's arriving, there's something quite nostalgic about the sight and sounds of a mini out on the stages."
"We are delighted to be hosting this new Championship and we hope competitors will make the effort to come across and enjoy a weekends craic with us."
Championship co-ordinator and Clitheroe and District Motor Club member, Chris Woodcock added;
"We are pleased to take this new championship to the Carryduff Forklift Down Rally in Northern Ireland. I have devised a format with simple class structure for contenders to demonstrate their skills and abilities on the highest quality asphalt rallies around the United Kingdom. The ethos of this challenge is about friendly rivalry and putting fun back into the sport."
We have no doubt seeing these beautiful little cars take on our classic stages will appeal to all age groups.

With preparations well under way for the 2019 event we are delighted to call it the Carryduff Forklift Down Rally for a second consecutive year.
The Carryduff based, family run business proved to be a great asset to the 2018 rally and their advice, support, and at times patience, really made the event the success it turned out to be.
Carryduff Forklift Sales Executive, Barry Greer said,
"we were delighted to be involved with last year's Down Rally and the success that it was, made our decision to stay on as title sponsor for a second year, so much easier. The support from competitors, and speed that the entrylist was filled, is a credit to the team of people from both clubs who were involved in the planning. We were out on the day spectating with some of our valued customers and we saw first hand the amount of people who turned up to run the event on the ground. We are grateful to all these people for making the event carrying our name, a memorable one."
"it was a delight to introduce our customers, some of whom had never been to a motorsport event before, to a world our family have been involved with for many years. We will be out and about again this year and hope to see some of you in service or on the stages."
Andy Gilmore, back as Clerk of the Course added,
"we are delighted to have Carryduff Forklift working with us again this year and are thankful for another year's support from the Greer family. Rathfriland Motor Club and Ballynahinch and District Motor Club will also continue to work together. We have a great team who now have a year's experience of working together under our belts and we hope to build on last year's success."
"in particular I look forward to welcoming our competitors back to County Down. Our team will endeavour to put on an event worthy of their support."
With both competitors and spectators travelling from near and far to enjoy last year's family friendly event, we hope to deliver more of the same in 2019.
The format of this years event will remain similar, with just a few tweaks to both the stages and schedule.
