Following a highly successful media launch of the PartsforCars Irish Rallycross Championship in Mondello Park, the season is ready to get underway.
The Irish Rallycross Championship roared into life in Mondello Park this week, when the championship held its official launch. A whos, who of Irish Rallycross was in attendance and as master of ceremonies Leo Nulty started the proceedings it became apparent that the championship is in it’s best position in many years.
It was also great to see some new faces in the room including World Rally Championship driver Craig Breen. Craig was very enthusiastic about Rallycross and without much hesitation accepted an offer to drive Derek Tohill’s Ford Fiesta Supercar on the track. It’s fair to say he got into the swing of it very fast!
The historic Mondello Park circuit will host 6 of the 7 rounds of the championship with General Manager Roddy Greene confirming they will “run multiple layouts to provide some unique challenges over the course of the year.” Pallas Track in Tynagh Co. Galway will host a solitary round in 2019.
Getting underway in the traditional layout track in Mondello, the racing season will burst into life on Sunday the 3rd of March. With many top supercars and modified drivers committing to be on the start line, it’s going to be an action-packed start of the season. From here the circus heads west to Tyangh to do battle on
what is a very difficult but thoroughly rewarding rallycross track. Its akin to the historic rallycross tracks of Scandinavia.
We return to Mondello Park for the rest of the year, starting with a run in reverse on the 19th of May followed by a doubleheader weekend on the 20th & 21st of July. Following an event on the 20th October, the year will be rounded off with the finale in Mondello on the 24th of November.
The championship is delighted to welcome back longtime title sponsor PartsforCars for another year. Their renewed commitment and increased activities in the promotion of the championship can only attest to the strength of the series. PartsforCars will be joined by new sponsors Diamondbrite, IPRS ltd, Morris Roofing & Cladding Maintenance and Rigs 4 Gigs. An increased online presence will promote the championship to new levels and with many new and returning drivers committing to the championship it is looking to be one of the strongest in years!
