The forestry action moves to Cork this coming weekend with the Abbey Hotel Moonraker Forest Rally promoted and organised by Munster Car Club. This is the third round of the Valvoline Motorsport Ireland National Forest Rally Championship. The sudden onset of snow which brought the previous round, the Limerick Forest Rally to a premature end has thrown up some surprising championship positions as the results were declared final after only two stages. Keith Power & Michael Carbin share the championship lead on 28 points after two rounds, both drivers in Mitsubishi Lancers. Power was declared the victor on Limerick when the results were made final. Peter McCullagh makes it a trio of Mitsubishis in the top three places and he is just two points behind the leading pair.
Erstwhile championship leader Marty McCormack who won the opening round in Carrick on Suir but slipped off the road in Limerick still manages to hold fourth place and is six points off the championship lead. Niall Henry lies in fifth place in the DS3 R5 Citroen while Mickey Conlon completes the top six championship placings and is the top placed 2WD contender.
The Junior Class which is split into Class 16 and 16A for 2019 sees Marty Gallagher lead the 16A class in his Peugeot 208 R2, just two points ahead of Derek Mackarel's rapid Vauxhall Nova. Jason Dickson in third place is just a solitary point behind Mackarel. In Class 16 Shane Kenneally has taken impressive maximum points from two rounds so far to hold a six point lead. Jason Murphy the J1000 champion of 2017 & 2018 is adjusting well to life in the more powerful class and hold second ahead of Gareth Deazley.
The M.O’Brien sponsored J1000 championship for 16-19 year olds is shaping up to be a great battle with Kyle McBride leading on 21 points after two rounds. Reece Pollock and Peter Beaton are tied for second place on 18 points. Casey Jay Coleman on fourteen points lies fourth ahead of Marcus McElwee and Ella Conway who are tied on eleven points. Aaron Whelan and Joseph Kelly are on nine and eight points respectively having been caught out by the conditions in Limerick and forced to retire from the event.

Ballyvourney was the place to be last Friday evening for the Official Press Launch of the Munster Car Club’s Forestry event, The Abbey Hotel Moonraker Forestry Rally.

Local TD Aindrias Moynihan mentioned the Munster Car clubs efforts in organising the event and welcomed the financial contribution the Rally has brought to the area over the last 6 years.
Neil Phelan of Acesigns Cork L.T.D, who is an associate sponsor, thanked the committee and the club members of the Moonraker Forestry Rally and wished the organising team, led by C.O.C Sean Daly, all the very best for the event.
Next to speak was Michael Creedon, proprietor of the Abbey Hotel Ballyvourney, who gave a brief outline of his role within the sponsorship of the rally and he congratulated the team on the hard work put in this year to get the rally up and going.
Our Club Chairman Colman Hegarty welcomed the large crowd on behalf of the club and thanked everyone for attending.
The last to speak was the man at the helm for the first time, C.O.C Sean Daly. He opened by welcoming everyone and thanked all for taking the time to come along on a Friday night. He went on to thank his team and stated that event is now ready to be finalised and good to go. He made special mention of the volunteers that come out to marshal the event as well as stage commanders, officials, timekeepers and everybody else who helps make this fantastic event the real jewel in the crown of the Valvoline Irish Forestry Rally Championship, as well as being a counting Round of the Suirway Group South East Stages Rally Championship. He urged the gathering to support the sponsors in any way they could and thanked them for their financial assistance. He concluded that entries were open and were steadily coming in.
The Championship standings are tight at the top after Rd.2 in Limerick. In the drivers category overall Michael Carbin and Keith Power are joint leaders on 28pts. Update on route:
Since our last press release, we unfortunately encountered some issues and the proposed format of running 3 x 3 is no longer viable. Nonetheless, the team worked hard over the past week and have devised a revised route of four stages repeated twice, totalling approx. 70km. The route is very compact with only approximately 130km of road distance.
We will have more details in the coming weeks, but you can always contact either Sean Daly or Finbarr Hanratty for any information required.
Both Sean and Finbarr will be in Carrick-On Suir Forestry Rally this coming weekend, and will make their best effort to talk to all competitors. You will be able to catch them in the Service Area.
We wish the Forestry Championship and Carrick-On-Suir Motor Club the very best of luck this weekend, and indeed hope that all competitors will have a safe and enjoyable event.
