The National Night Navigation Trial Championship kicked off for the 2018/2019 season in Cork for the Startrek Night navigation which had a demanding route set out by COC Sean Daly and his team. Ahead of them a fantastic 80 mile route greeted crews with 7 controls, 37 timepoints and 5 vias. On the night expert crew of James Fitzgerald and Ken Carmody took the top spot with 32 penalties and were followed closely by Monaghan crew Peter Deery and David McCrudden.
If the results from the first round are anything to go by the championship will be a long hard battle. The next round of the championship is Monaghan’s Drumlin Night Navigation Trial. The Drumlin has a reputation for been a hard event on both man and machine. I’m sure that COC Conor Maguire and ACOC Arthur Kierans will have a few tricks up their sleeves to put a few heads scratching next weekend. Following on from Monaghan we have the Skibbereen Carbery Night Navigation Trial. This event comes in as a reserve round but will be counted this year due to Midland not running in December. After Christmas then there is no rest as we are straight back into night navigations with two southern rounds (Cork 1000 Shakes & Skibbereen 100 isles) taking place in January. February we have the Midland Navigation and we finish up in March with both Cavan and Monaghan Navigations. At this time the dates for the 2019 calendar are provisional so be sure to check back when they are confirmed. So get those pencils sharpened and Potti’s cleaned. It’s going to be a good season.
