Leading from start to finish, Donegal’s Declan Boyle and his Monaghan co-driver James O’Reilly won the Óstán Oileán Acla/Connacht Print & Signs Mayo Rally, the
opening round of the Triton Showers National Rally Championship.
At the end of the nine-stage event on the scenic Achill Island, Boyle/O’Reilly finished 37 seconds ahead of the Monaghan/Limerick duo of Josh Moffett and Keith Moriarty.
On their debut in a Ford Fiesta R5, Derry’s Desi Henry and his Cork co-driver Liam Moynihan netted third – one minute and 1.1 seconds further behind.
Top seeds Donegal’s Joe McGonigle/Ciaran Geaney (Mini WRC) were fourth. Former Triton champions Donagh Kelly (Ford Focus WRC) and Roy White (Ford Fiesta WRC) didn’t enjoy the best of fortune, Kelly punctured and dropped away down the order before finishing tenth in general classification while White was an opening stage casualty when he slid off and beached his car.
Boyle, who survived an electrical glitch en-route to the start, punched in the best time on the short opening stage where he was 2.3 seconds ahead of the Ford Focus WRC of Donagh Kelly with Josh Moffett (Fiesta WRC) 1.9 seconds further behind and 0.7 seconds ahead of fourth placed Desi Henry (Fiesta R5).
Former Triton champion Clonmel’s Roy White (Fiesta WRC) had an all too brief event, he slid off and beached his Fiesta at the stage end, under Rally 2 he went on to finish 57th. overall.
On the 15.14 kilometre Atlantic Drive stage Boyle set another fastest time just as he did on S.S. 3, The Valley. The Donegal driver arrived at the Keel service park with a lead of 16.2 seconds.
“You won’t believe this but the car stopped on the way to the opening stage, it was an electrical issue that we sorted. I’m playing with the suspension settings, they were a bit too soft earlier.”
Moffett was second,
“I haven’t sat in this car since Monaghan two years ago but I’m getting the feel of it now.”
Third placed Henry – 16.3 seconds further behind was happy with his progress although he lost time on the second stage possibly due to the short gearing of his new Fiesta R5, he also had to slow to avoid contact with a sheep dog.
Kelly spun on the second stage and lost a place but a time consuming puncture on the third stage dropped him to 47th. place.
Top seed Joe McGonigle (Mini WRC) - 38.4 seconds off the lead slotted into fourth, he admitted that he was struggling with the set-up, he also had a slight altercation with a bale on the second stage.
An untroubled Niall Maguire (Subaru WRC) and Group N leader Aidan Wray (Mitsubishi) completed the top six.
Cavan’s Chris Armstrong (Escort) led the two-wheel drive category and occupied seventh in a top ten that also included Brendan Cumiskey (Fiesta R5), Stuart Darcy (Darrian) and Mickey Conlon (Escort).
On the repeat loop of three stages Boyle managed to extend his lead margin to 21 seconds, the Donegal driver admitted he pushed hard and enjoyed a clean run. Second placed Moffett was of a similar view and was clearly enjoying the challenge.
Henry – 44.7 seconds further behind - was trying various settings and some suspension adjustments to find the ideal set-up for his new car. A more confident McGonigle remained in fourth and as previously, Maguire and Group N leader Wray completed the top six.
Kelly made up several places and was 18th at the final service, he reckoned that he probably opted for a tyre compound that was a little too soft.
Although Armstrong continued to lead the Modified section, a charging Darcy reduced the deficit to 6.9 seconds. Cumiskey, sandwiched between the duo reckoned that the suspension set-up was probably a little too soft. Conlon was tenth.
Championship title sponsor, Kevin Barrett in the Triton Showers liveried Subaru WRC was eleventh, he found the sixth stage particularly slippery. In Group N, Mark Boyle (Mitsubishi Evo IX) and Paul Barrett (Mitsubishi EvoX) were second and third respectively.
Boyle was quickest through stages seven and eight to move 33.6 seconds ahead of Moffett, Kelly picked up two places on the short seventh stage but on the longest stage of the rally, Atlantic Drive he moved from sixteenth to tenth, his final finishing spot.
Boyle went on to record a fine victory, he also won the Power Stage to claim an extra Triton championship point. Moffett and Henry completed the top three.
In the Modified section, Stuart Darcy reeled in Cavan’s Chris Armstrong (Escort) on the final stage despite losing the exhaust of his Darrian on the penultimate stage and some gear oil on the final stage.
In the Triton Showers Junior category Armagh’s Jasson Black and his Monaghan co-driver Jack McKenna took an emphatic victory, they finished two minutes and 58.1 seconds ahead of the Citroen C2R2 of Armagh’s Johny Armstrong/Philly Mitchell. The Donegal crew of David Kelly/Kenny Bustard (Toyota Starlet) were 42 seconds further behind in third. Black/McKenna also won the Triton Showers “Drive of the Day” award.

A new season of the Triton Showers National Rally Championship gets underway on Sunday next with the Óstán Oileán Acla/Connacht Print & Signs Mayo Rally. The event showcases the splendid scenery of Achill Island where nine stages - a loop of three stages repeated three times - form the thrust of the event.
Four former national champions are amongst the entry with Donegal’s Declan Boyle and Donagh Kelly along with Monaghan’s Niall Maguire and Tipperary’s Roy White sharing a total of seven titles.
White (Ford Fiesta WRC) is the most recent champion of the quartet - winning the Triton series two seasons ago - remarkably, he clinched the Vard Memorial Trophy without actually winning any of the events. Just a few weeks ago as a shakedown for this event White won the Nenagh Rally where Kelly and Boyle were second and third respectively.
While that victory is likely to be a confidence booster for the Clonmel driver, he will be under no illusions as he is very aware that his rivals will have also benefitted from their seat time. Both White and Boyle (Ford Fiesta WRC) are committed to a full Triton programme and each will endeavor to secure as many championship points as possible from this event.
Meanwhile, Kelly (Ford Focus WRC) is using the event as a shakedown for his bid to win next week’s West Cork Rally in Clonakilty for an unprecedented fifth successive year. A winner of the 2015 Triton series Kelly will compete in the next round in Kerry before deciding whether to continue with a championship bid. Interestingly, it will be the first time for the trio to compete in Achill.
Maguire (Subaru WRC) is a triple national champion and has won the Mayo Rally in 2015 and previously in 2012, he’s been chasing that elusive fourth national crown since 2004.
Another former Mayo Rally winner Garry Jennings will compete in his Subaru WRC, a past Irish Tarmac champion, the Fermanagh man had an all too brief outing in Nenagh where he retired after just two stages.
Monaghan’s Josh Moffett (Fiesta R5) is also on the entry list, he is seeded at number six and given a strong result may get involved in a championship bid to try and emulate his brother Sam, who won the Triton series last year.
An interesting entry is that of Derry driver Desi Henry in his recently acquired Ford Fiesta R5, how quickly he adapts to his new car remains to be seen and the picturesque stages in Achill could provide part if not all of the answer.
Last year’s rally winner Donegal’s Joe McGonigle will campaign a Mini WRC as opposed to the Skoda Fabia R5 he drove to success last year, he too is on the trail of the Triton series for the season ahead. Having won in Mayo last year, he will have the number one decals on the door of his Mini WRC.
Maynooth’s Kevin Barrett in the Triton Showers sponsored Subaru WRC will occupy the number nine spot, he is a former winner of the Mayo Rally (2011) and was second in both 2010 and 2012.
In Group N, Motorsport Safety Triton Showers champion Monaghan’s Shane Maguire (Mitsubishi) will battle with former champion Tyrone’s Aidan Wray (Mitsubishi EvoIX) and Maynooth’s Paul Barrett in the Vado liveried Subaru.
Vado will again sponsor the television coverage of the Triton series via On the Limit Sports that will be shown on terrestrial and satellite television.
Elsewhere, the Modified section features entries from Tyrone’s Adrian Hetherington (Escort), Cavan’s Chris Armstrong (Escort), former Billy Coleman award winner Donegal’s Stuart Darcy (Darrian), Carlow’s David Condell (Escort), Monaghan’s Mickey Conlon (Escort), who won the category in last year’s Triton series and Donegal’s Michael Boyle (Honda Civic).
Scotland’s Lee Hastings (Subaru), a class winner in last year’s Triton National Rally Championship is also competing as is Limerick’s Eamonn Daly (Mitsubishi) and Derry’s Niall Henry (Mitsubishi)
In the Junior section Shrule’s Noel Murphy (Honda Civic) is the top local entry and he will face stern opposition from Monaghan’s Jonny Treanor (Honda Civic) and Armagh’s Jason Black (Toyota Starlet).
THE LOCALS:
A number of Mayo drivers are competing on the event with Achill’s Peter McManamon (Peugeot 205) and Brian Lavelle (Honda Civic) hoping to make a good impression in front of their local folowers. Others such as Belcarra’s Barry Cuffe (Escort) and Colm O’Connor (Toyota Corolla); Crossmolina’s Stephen Gallagher, John Duffy and Stephen Gallagher all in Honda Civics; Castlebar’s Gordon Nimmo (Ford Fiesta); Ballina’s Tony Langdon (Honda Integra) and Bonniconlon’s Trisha Greavey (Honda Civic) add to the interest.

Ray Clarke, Mayo & District Motorsport Club Chief Marshal has announced an
interesting incentive as a way of saying thank you to all marshals who are out in
action for the weekend of the Mayo Stages Rally 2018 on the 10th & 11th March
in Achill.
The concept is that every Marshal will be entered into a draw for a fantastic prize
of three hotel vouchers, one being allocated to each stage of the event. The
voucher will entitle the winner to three night’s accommodation for two people in
any one of 65 hotels of their choosing (see leaflet attached). The draw will take
place during the course of the rally day and the winners will be announced at
prize giving in rally HQ that evening.
Mayo & District Motorsport Club would like to thank our neighbouring Motor
Clubs and in particular their Marshal Coordinators for all their efforts in recruiting
marshals for the Mayo Stages. With less than 3 weeks to go, we look forward to
welcoming you to Achill on the weekend of the 10th & 11th March.
For anyone who would like to get involved and help on the day, Marshal Training
will take place in Óstán Oileán Acla on Sunday 4th
of March at 2pm, all welcome.

There was great excitement as Mayo & District Motorsport Club gathered in Óstán Oileán Acla
on Saturday evening for the launch of the Óstán Oileán Acla/Connacht Print & Signs Mayo Stages
Rally 2018. Locals and Sponsors got a preview of what’s in store on Rally weekend as they
inspected a fine array of rally cars on display in the car park for the launch.
Clerk of the Course Trevor O’Connell kicked off proceedings by officially welcoming everyone to
Óstán Oileán Acla, which will be Rally Head Quarters for the weekend of the 10th and 11th March.
He welcomed all the sponsors and had a special welcome for Andrew Mullen, MD of ‘Sligo Pallets’
who travelled from Sligo for the evening. Trevor thanked Cathal McLoughlin and his staff in the
Óstán Oileán Acla for all their assistance and support in the lead up to the event, and also thanked
joint title sponsor, David Devers, Connacht Print & Signs for his ongoing support of the Mayo
Stages Rally.
This year in addition to being the opening round of the ‘Sligo Pallets Border Rally Championship’
the Mayo Stages Rally is also the opening round of the ‘Triton Showers National Rally
Championship’ this will attract some of the bigger cars from around the country and overseas.
Trevor thanked Brendan Flynn from the ‘Border Championship’, Aidan Kelly, Chairman of the
National Rally Championship and Kevin Barrett, Triton Showers for all their support.
Also in attendance at the launch were Sean Molloy of Achill Tourism who joined with local County
Councillor Paul McNamara in welcoming the event back to Achill for the second year running.
Trevor thanked An Garda Síochána and Mayo County Council, in particular Gerry McDonnell and
Councillor Paul McNamara who have been very helpful.
Trevor explained that the final touches are being put in place to ensure the Rally runs as smoothly
as possible and that it will be a weekend to remember for the competing crews, spectators,
sponsors and most importantly the local residents who have been so accommodating and
welcoming to all. He added that without local support and sponsorship, it would not be possible
to run the Mayo Stages Rally and he thanked everyone who has come on board – sponsors of
Service Area, Marshal Meeting Points, Programme Sponsors, Stage & Scrutiny Sponsors.
The
weekend is a free family friendly event, one not to be missed and he asked that everyone support
the sponsors as without their generosity events such as these would not be possible
Wrapping up the formalities Trevor thanked his team for all their support and hard work and
said they were all looking forward to the big event on the 10th/11th March.

Trevor O’Connell, last year’s Clerk of the Course is taking up the mantle once again; he has a number of new additions to his team this year and they will bring a combination of experience and local knowledge to the event and will be the driving force behind the weekend.
Feedback from last year was overwhelmingly positive, with both competitors and officials commenting on the fantastic welcome, along with the challenging stages, stunning scenery and a location which lends itself so well to the running of a rally. The groundwork put in by the organising team last year has paved the way for a bigger and more high-profile event and the 2018 Mayo Stages Rally will not fail to impress. Óstán Oileán Acla are back on board as Rally HQ and the preparations are well advanced, with more announcements to come in due course.
The local community can expect to welcome rally crews from all four corners of Ireland as well as from overseas from the 9th – 11th March, for what promises to be an exciting weekend for both competitors and spectators alike.
