Kerry Motor Club will host its annual Banna Beach Resort Kerry Winter Rally on Sunday with over 80 cars expected to take to the start line of the popular end of season rally.
Contested over six special stages in Ardfert area of North Kerry where recent farming activity is expected to make the going very slippery in places, ensuring this running of the event will be as challenging as ever.
If ever one family could lay claim to ownership of a rally, then the Cronins of Ballylickey in West Cork have a strong-case for such a claim. Denis and his nephews Keith and Daniel have eight titles between them.
Top seed is last year’s winner Daniel Cronin, surprisingly in a Mitsubishi Lancer E10 and not his usual Ford Fiesta R5. He and co-driver, local man Shane Buckley, will hoping to equal Keith previous hattrick on the event after previously taking the title in 2014 in a Subaru Impreza World Rally Car.
Another former winner on the entry list is local hero and 2013 victor Mike Quinn and Tony Healy in their potent 2.4 Escort Mk2. The Kerry Motor Club crew, apart from overall honours, will be chasing the Donal O’Flaherty Memorial Trophy, awarded annually to the top club crew driving at two-wheel-drive car.
Limerick’s Ed O’Callaghan arrives in Kerry in fine form after finishing second on the recent Garda Rally in Baltinglass and he has Ardfert’s Keith McCarthy on pacenote duty. His Limerick neighbour Ed Synan has competed on nearly every Banna rally since the early 1990s and he is back for another go with local man Denis O’Connell on the notes.
Former Billy Coleman award winner Stuart Darcy has entered in his newly acquired Darrien T90GTR and could be a force to be reckoned with if the roads stay dry.
Local man Tim Enright is in pole position to take the Top Part West Coast Championship in his Ford Escort, to record his first major rally title in over ten years of rallying. His nearest rival is former champion Shane Maguire in a Mitsubishi Lancer E9 but once there are 16 registered crews between Maguire and Enright at the end of the event the title will stay in County Kerry.
Tom Relihan and Maurice McElligott are two more members of Kerry Motor Club capable of a top result and will also be in the running for the Donal O’Flaherty Cup.
The rally is all about debuts too, with many of the entry making their first foray into stage rallying. Tralee man Daniel Chung is the current KMC Autosolo champion but Sunday’s event is his first rally in a newly acquired Honda Civic. David Griffin, synonymous with the organisational side of rallying in Kerry over the last 20 years are another newcomer to take on the challenge in a historic-spec Toyota Corolla. Ardfert man Jakes Kelly is a previous winner of the event, as a codriver, and while he has driven rally cars on events in the past, this is his first time tackling his home event. Meanwhile Katie Quinn, daughter of 2013 winner Mick, will contest her second rally in another Civic.
The rally starts from just outside the Banna Beach Hotel at 9.20am on Sunday morning, before a short service halt on the sea front in Ballyheigue a short -time later. Ahead lie six fast but demanding stages in the north Kerry area before a 1530 finish at the hotel later that evening.

Kerry Motor Club’s ladder of motorsport opportunity has become a reality for one young Tralee man.
Daniel Chung will make his rally debut on the Banna Beach Hotel Kerry Winter Rally on November 12.
He is the newly crowned Kerry Motor Club KK Hydraulics Auto Solo Champion, just three years after joining the club and starting out as a novice.
Auto Solo is a form of low-speed grass roots motorsport, popular in America but introduced to Ireland by the Tralee-based club by long-serving member Tom Barrett just over ten years ago.
Chung joined the club in 2014, with limited knowledge on how to actually go about starting out in rallying. Three years on he is the club’s Auto Solo champion and will take on his first rally, next month, at the wheel of a newly acquired Toyota Starlet.
Club chairman PJ O’Dowd said:
“This is the epitome of a young driver starting out, learning skills at basic level at the Auto Solos and transferring his knowledge to rallying. This shows what any young driver can achieve and the importance of clubs running entry level motorsport events.”

The daughter of a former winner of the Banna Beach Resort Kerry Winter Rally will make her rally debut on this weekend’s Garda Motor Club’s Baltinglass Rally ahead of a planned outing on next month’s local rally.
Katie Quinn, daughter of top local driver Mike Quinn, will drive the recently acquired Honda Civic that she shares with her boyfriend Eric Honan.
Katie has previously co-driven in the car, on Eric’s home event, the Clare Stages, last month but Sunday’s County Wicklow rally marks her first time in the driving seat. She is using the rally as a high-speed test ahead of Kerry Motor Club’s Winter Rally on November 12.
Making it an all family affair, her father has also placed an entry for the rally in his potent Ford Escort. He has finished in the top three in Baltinglass on several occasions in the past and, like his daughter, will use the six-stage rally as preparation for the local event he last won in 2013.
“It is a very a similar rally to Banna, that is why we are doing it, “said Mike. “I always had good runs up there and there is no point in Katie doing Banna without driving the car first. I did tell her if she gets a few class wins I will give her the Escort.”
Online entries are now open for the Kerry Winter Stages Rally 2017, details below.

The Top Part West Coast Rally Championship will reach its conclusion on next month’s Banna Beach Resort Kerry Winter Rally with local driver Tim Enright in pole position to claim his first major rally title.
The Ford Escort driver took the lead of the series following a strong performance on the recent Clare Stages where he finished a creditable 10th overall.
The Kerry Winter Rally has been a stable round of the popular Top Part-backed series since it was founded in 1993. Rounds have added to the original roster (Birr and Sligo) while The Fastnet Rally opted out a few years ago. Banna , along with Clare, The Circuit of Munster, The Galway Summer Rally and The Circuit of Kerry are the events that always formed the championship.
This year’s Banna Beach Resort Kerry Winter Rally will feature some new innovations, including a short shakedown test on Saturday evening and a new overnight parc ferme alongside the rally headquarters.
Enright is looking forward to defending his championship lead on home ground. His greatest threat is multiple West Coast Champion Shane Maquire but even if the Monaghan man was to win the rally , a top 15 result will secure the North Kerryman the title.
He said: “I never won anything in my life but we are going to Banna with the intention of winning this. I could not believe it when they told me at the finish ramp in Clare was leading the championship.
The six stage rally runs on November 12 and features some of the most popular rally roads in north County Kerry.

Kerry Motor Club has released preliminary details of its November 12th Banna Beach Resort KerryWinter Rally.
The popular end of season club motorsport event will run over two popular and classic stages in North Kerry (ran three times each) but with slight variations to previously used formats.
Kerry Motor Club also runs the Circuit of Kerry national rally and clerk of the course Jonathon O’Shea has promised:
“A route more in line with what you would expect from the Circuit of Kerry style stages . We will run as close to the permitted mileage for such an event offering the best possible value for competitors and plenty of viewing scope for spectators along with the added attraction of a shakedown stage the evening before the main event.”
The rally is the final round of the locally sponsored Top Part Rally Championship and following the recent Clare Stages, the series is being led by local Ford Escort driver and Kerry Motor Club member Tim Enright.
Regulations are currently awaiting Motorsport Ireland approval but once the formalities are out of
the way entries will open for one of the most popular rallies in the country.
