James Scoops Major Irish Tarmac Rally Championship Prize in Cork!

After one of the most dramatic Cork 20 International rallies in recent history were difficult weather conditions including standing water on the special stages made the going tricky, twenty-two year old James Wilson from Keady, County Armagh and his Derry co-driver Gavin Doherty in their Peugeot 208 R2 took the R2 category victory on the event and the Clonakilty Black Pudding Irish Tarmac Championship R2 title as well, after a very hard fought season.

It's a championship win which earns them a free entry to a Belgian Championship event. The battle was on all weekend between James and the similar 208 R2 driven by Belfast's William Creighton, in a winner takes all scenario. It was Creighton who took the lead initially after stage two, but in the slippery conditions James moved into a 6.9 second lead with a faster time on stage three. It could have been a bigger lead had the time for stages four counted but a stage interruption meant that all the crews received the same time. As conditions dried out for the second loop William Creighton turned the tide as James found himself with too soft a set up and William took full advantage opening up a thirty-one second advantage over James after day ones eight stages. Sunday morning and things took a turn for the worse for James and Gavin team on the first stage when a brake pipe fractured and two minutes were lost to class leader Creighton on the loop as they limped to service.
“We were happy with our position after day one and were enjoying the conditions to some extent even though they were very tricky in places. It’s out first year in a powerful R2 machine and in left hand drive, and things have been progressing nicely. The brake failure on day two was a major setback there was no doubting that, and at that point we couldn’t catch William, who was going very well, and we were settling for second.”

But the Cork lanes had a final twist, and it was Creighton's turn to have misfortune on stage eleven, retiring after over-turning the 208 in the treacherous conditions. So James and Gavin survived the sixteen tough tests to take victory, in their first season with the French pocket rocket.
"It's been such a tough weekend, very hard to push all the time in the conditions and there were many casualties. We thought it was all over on Sunday morning, but rallying is a funny sport and we got to the finish. It's fantastic to win this category, and take the prize in our first year of trying, and a big thanks to all my sponsors whose assistance has been invaluable. Also thanks to the team who have worked hard all year through the good times and the setbacks " said the young engineer.

The Keady driver won the Junior category in the 2016 ANICC Northern Ireland Rally Championship, using a Peugeot 106, before the family team invested in a brand new left hand drive Peugeot 208 R2 from Peugeot Sport in France, and now he’s not looking back. “In 2018 we aim to contest the Irish Tarmac series once again, and also the Irish National Forest Championship, which will give us valuable loose surface experience with the car, so it’s all systems go!” Now the search is on for sponsorship and James is keen to acknowledge the help that Philip White Tyres, Road Tankers Armagh, James Wilson Garage Services, DC Drive and Herrons Country Fried Chicken has given him this year.

Sam/Karl top off fantastic season with win in Cork

Sam Moffett completed a perfect 2017 season when he took victory on the AceSigns Cork 20 International Rally, the final round of the Clonakilty Blackpudding Irish Tarmac Championship. Crowned champion when he started the event, Sam had an event long battle with his brother Josh with the lead swapping a few times. On the final stage with Josh holding a 2.3 second advantage he went off the road and into retirement leaving Sam with yet another victory this year. Alastair Fisher overhauled Joe McGonigle for second place on the final stage by less than a second and this pair finished second and third overall in the championship as well.

William Mavitty took the Group N title in his Mitsubishi Lancer while James Wilson in a Peugeot 208 was the winner of the International 2WD section after rival William Creighton retired. William Eves and Keith McIvor won the National and Historic sections of the rally respectively and the one major category to be decided prior to Cork was the junior title. Jenna McCann took victory overall on the event as well as the championship title in her Fiesta R2 after a superb year. Justin Ryan was in with a chance to win the title if Jenna hit trouble but an early excursion on Sunday made a tough job impossible and for the second year in a row he had to settle for the runner up spot after a very competitive season.

Triple Crown Beckons for Sam in Cork

The AceSigns Cork 20 International Rally is as usual the final round of the Clonakilty Blackpudding Irish Tarmac Rally Championship. Sam Moffett & Karl Atkinson in a Ford Fiesta R5 are champions elect as they only need to start the rally to secure the title and give Sam an unprecedented Triple Crown having already won the National and Forestry Championships. It will be the first time that a driver has won all three major championships in the same season and appropriately Sam starts the Cork 20 with number 1 on the door. He is followed by his younger sibling Josh who won this event last year in fine fashion and although he has missed some rounds this year will still be very keen to take his second successive win here.

Third seed Alastair Fisher lies in second place in the championship with engine failure on the Ulster Rally ruining his chances of bringing the title fight to Cork. The Fermanagh driver has been one of the quickest men in the championship but is still awaiting his first outright win on the Tarmac Championship round, and perhaps this could be his event. He will certainly be hoping for better luck that last year when an accident cost him the title in Cork. Stephen Wright and Joe McGonigle seeded at five and six have upped their pace this year and will be looking to end the year on a high note, with both drivers holding third and fifth respectively. Both drivers have an outside chance of finishing championship runner up which would give them confidence heading into next season.

Other drivers in the top ten that will be in the hunt for points include Aaron MacHale, Padraic Duffy and Owen Murphy who returns to the championship in his S2000 Skoda after a long layoff. All of these drivers are capable of a very good result should any of the crews ahead of them hit trouble over the demanding sixteen stage event. In Group N William Mavitty leads the championship in his Group N Lancer and with his closest rival Gavin Kelly not having entered the event to date it looks like the title is going to Fermanagh for 2017. The International 2WD class sees William Creighton hold the advantage but James Wilson is only six points back so this will be a real winner takes all battle between the two Northern Irish drivers.

In the Modified Championship Kevin Eves and William Lynch are also practically certain of the title as they only need to start in Cork, but some of the other class and overall places are still up for grabs. John Devlin and Eugene Meegan are second and third respectively and only separated by five points. Devlin has been a model of consistency all season while Meegans challenge for the title ended when he went off the road on the Ulster Rally. Sean Moynihan, Jason McSweeney, Art McCarrick, Nick Barnett and Richard Whelan are among those who will look to improve their overall positions before the end of the season.

The Historic Championship was settled in the Isle of Man as Barry Jones took his fourth maximum score of the year having lost some ground on the opening two rounds. Since taking top points in West Cork he has rarely looked back with second in Donegal being his only time being beaten since. Keith McIvor in second place has also had a very good year to cement second place. Third placed Ernie Graham brings his fabulous BMW M3 back to Ireland while Shawn Rayner will be hoping for better luck than on his last trip to Ireland when he damaged his pristine Escort on the Ulster Rally and eventually went OTL. Other drivers looking for points in the Historic Championship include Philip McKibbin, Alan Watkins and Duncan William all in Escorts.

The Junior Championship is down to two drivers with Jenna McCann holding a three point advantage going into the final round ahead of Justin Ryan. Although out of the running, Eric Calnan the top junior seed has the potential to be kingmaker as he won the junior category last year and by taking maximum points in Cork could swing the title McCann’s way if both she and Ryan finish. Both drivers have to drop their worst score which in both cases is ten points and as only three registered drivers are competing the margins will be very tight.

The sixteen stage event begins from Macroom on Saturday morning with the first stage due at 9:44 and eight stages in total on the opening day. The second day has eight more stages near Millstreet and the rally looks like being one of the toughest events of the year. The first car is due back at the finish ramp at approximately 4:30pm on Sunday evening.

The Munster Car Club organisers of the Cork 20 International Rally and promoters of the event are delighted to announce, in conjunction with the Cork 20 Fundraising committee, a Clubman incentive scheme. This incentive covers classes 9, 10, 11F, 11R and 12 and entitles competitors to entry fee refunds which will be awarded as per below:

Speaking today, Paul Browne C.O.C of the event, stated that
“This year we wanted to reward what we feel are the backbone of Irish rallying. We looked at what could be done, and in conjunction with our partners the Macroom Cork 20 Fundraising Committee, came up with this new and novel approach to give something back to our supporting crews.” He added; “Interest is reaching fever pitch and I believe that once this incentive is announced the Clubman Classes will be well supported”.

Paul added that the regulations are currently with Motorsport Ireland and we would hope to release them and the entry forms shortly.
“We have had quite a bit of interest from Ireland and indeed further afield which bodes well for this year’s event. We are really excited to bring the rally to its new home in Macroom with the classic stages such as Killnamartra, Fuhiry, Mullaghinish and Mushera to name but a few. We have a very exciting and spectacular weekend lined up in Macroom and there will be something for all the family over the rally weekend with the top clubman crews coming out to thrill the fans on these iconic stages.”

This year’s Acesigns Cork 20 International Rally is based in the Riverside Park Hotel Macroom who are also sponsors of the event.

The Acesigns Cork 20 International Rally 2017 is the final counting Round of the Clonakilty Black Pudding Irish Tarmac Rally Championship, a counting round of the Plasticbags.ie Southern 4 Rally Championship and a counting round of the Munster Car Club Championship.

Press Release Number 3 - ATTENTION ALL JUNIOR RALLY CREWS

Confirmation has been received that Juniors who enter this years Acesigns Cork 20 International Rally will be allowed to compete on both days of the rally.

On Saturday, Juniors will undertake a total of 6 stages covering some of the classic stages as competed on by previous W.R.C. Champion. (Eg Sebastien Loeb 7 times world champion)

On Sunday the Juniors will compete on a total of 4 stages which ensures that they compete in all of the rallies stages over the two days.

Total stage distance for the Juniors will be approx. 150 kilometers, with low road milage and all the classic stages will be covered at least once.

And all of this for ONLY €412 + the insurance levy.

The compact route will have the same centralised service, scrutiny and trailer park as all other competitors.

Any Junior (or main field competitor) who is intending on entering and who wishes to avail of an easy voucher payment system should make contact on the numbers below

With the Acesigns Cork 20 International Rally 2017 just around the corner, and being the final round of the 2017 Clonakilty Black Pudding Irish Tarmac Championship and a round of the Pasticbags.ie Southern Four Championship, the organising committee wishes to advise intending competitors of the following information.

The full route has now been finalised and will consist of 16 stages on a 4 x2 format on both days.

This year the rally will have a very compact route. The International/National competitors will compete over 240 stage kilometres with only 280 road kilometres in total. Entry fee for these competitors is being set at €775 + levy.

Historic competitors will run with the main field and will compete on 14 of the 16 stages giving them approx. 215 stage kilometres. Entry fee for the Historic category is being set at €685 + levy.

Junior competitors will be getting ten stages split over the two days with total stage distance of approx. 150 kilometres. Entry fee is being set at €412 + levy.

The compact route over the two days will have centralised service, scrutiny and trailer park.

Classic stages such as Killnamartra (which Sebastian Loeb stated as being one of the best he ever competed on), Fuhiry, Lough Allua, will be some of the stages being used in similar formats to what was used in years gone by.

With the Ace Signs Cork 20 International Rally 2017 quickly approaching and being the final round of the Irish Tarmac Championship, the organising team from the Munster Car Club under the guidance of COC Paul Browne are busy preparing an excellent event as usual.

This year’s event will be based in its new home in Macroom with its headquarters being the Riverside Park Hotel on the outskirts of the town on the Killarney side.

On speaking to Paul, he confirmed that they are at an advanced planning stage of the event with a few minor amendments to be made before the route will be finalised. He also stated that many of the classic stages used previously will have some element of them being used and he urges any competitor who are a) registered for the championship and b) wishing to compete in one of the best rallies in the country to be sure and send in their entries in due course.

Paul also stated that he has had some enquiries at this early stage from local and overseas competitors who either have competed previously or who wish to compete in the event for the first time and who are eager to attempt this very compact rally.
