Local hero Osian Pryce takes start-to-finish victory at Dolgellau event

Dolgellau star Osian Pryce and co-driver Dale Furniss secured a dominant victory at this weekend's North Wales Rally Services Rally North Wales (1st April) at the wheel of their Ford Fiesta R5.

Fresh from a podium spot at the opening round of the MSA British Rally Championship, Pryce was fastest on each of the events six stages to win by a margin of over 1m 20sec from second placed Euan Thorburn and Paul Beaton in a similar machine. The pairing made the long trip from Scotland to contest the event to gain seat time for their British and Scottish Championship campaigns. South Wales Subaru pilot Dylan Davies and co-driver Llion Williams took the final podium spot in third.

Nick Elliott and Dave Price was another crew to stay out front all day long with a dominant performance in the Historic event to take the Mintex MSA British Historic Rally Championship honours from Jason Pritchard and Phil Clarke, both crews using the crowd pleasing Ford Escort MK2.

With heavy overnight rain, the forests of Dyfi and Gartheiniog proved to be tough going for many of the 100 crews which started the Wolverhampton and South Staffordshire Car Club organised event. The morning loop consisted of three stages and the first test of the day would be the longest at just over 11 miles.

Pryce would open a huge 20 second advantage over Thorburn in the opener despite the quick release steering wheel coming adrift part way through the stage. This lead would never be relinquished and the Gwynedd driver stayed out of trouble for the remainder of the day to cross the ceremonial finish in Dolgellau with a well-deserved overall victory and maximum points in the Pirelli MSA Welsh Rally Championship.

"We didn't come here specifically for the win but it's great to have taken victory on an event that's so close to my doorstep" said Pryce at the finish. "It's only my second outing in the car so we still have plenty to work on but we are moving in the right direction 'pace wise'. Doing the whole rally on just four tyres meant we lost a little grip towards the end but we had enough of a lead to back off a bit on that last one. It's been a great day".

Thorburn felt uneasy during the opening loop in the morning, citing a poor tyre choice for the loss of time to Pryce. The Scotsman bolted on a different tyre pattern in the afternoon and instantly found a better pace but by that time, Pryce was into the distance and second was as good as Thorburn could manage.

Davies fought with a stuck flat shift in the first three tests but still challenged Thorburn's second spot on a number of stages. He brought the Impreza home in third ahead of David Howells and Jamie Edwards in their older shape Subaru in fourth. Ieuan Rowlands and Emyr Hall were the first two wheel drive runners in a fine fifth spot in their Ford Escort MK2.

The battle for historic honours was equally as thrilling with Ford Escort pilot Elliott taking a huge chunk of time from pre-event favorite Pritchard in the opening stage. Pritchard admitted to not having a good feeling in the car on the opener and the times reflected that early on. A puncture in the second stage did little to help his confidence but the Builth Wells driver later found his pace to take second spot.

Joe Price and Chris Brooks were set for a Historic podium but their rally ended when they put their Escort on its side on stage four, which allowed Devon's Rudi Lancaster and Guy Weaver to step up and claim the final podium place in third.

Former British Champion and two-time event winner David Llewellin returned to the stages in a Suzuki Swift courtesy of the Swift Shining Stars series. The Welshman had a little less power than he was used to but he and co-driver Carl Williamson enjoyed the event to take the Swift win by three minutes from Tom Delaney and Joe Cruttenden.

Elliott takes Mintex MSA BHRC double

Nick Elliott and Dave Price made it two wins from two rounds in the 2017 Mintex MSA British Historic Rally Championship with a resounding victory on the historic section of Rally North Wales (Saturday 1 April).

The Ford Escort Mk2 crew finished with a winning margin of 1m21s over defending champions Jason Pritchard and Phil Clarke after 45 miles of prime Welsh forest stages. Other category wins went to Phil Harris/Richard Suter (Mini Cooper) and Stanley Orr/Stephen McAuley (Ford Escort Mk1).

Fast, flowing stages in excellent conditions made this a very popular event with all the historic crews, although it was wet, slippery and misty at times the opening 11-miler in Gartheiniog. But that didn't bother Elliott who attacked the stage in style to open an immediate and decisive lead.

Pritchard struggled to find a rhythm and dropped to third behind Joe Price/Chris Brooks. With a 29s deficit to Elliott at main service, Price led the chase but had a moment on the second Gartheiniog stage and parked his Escort on its side and out of the rally.

Pritchard/Clarke re-took second place but were so nearly caught on the final Dyfi stage when Rudi Lancaster/Guy Weaver trimmed the gap to a single second in the fight for the runner-up position. Elliott/Price won Category 3 while Pritchard/Clarke headed Category K.

Other Category 3 class winners, following strong performances, were Ben Friend/Cliffy Simmons (Ford Escort Mk2) in D3 and David Hopkins/Tony Vart (Sunbeam Talbot) in D2.

Stanley Orr/Stephen McAuley set the pace in the Capital Construction Category 2 as Orr gained useful seat time in his BDA-powered Escort Mk1. They emerged clear winners ahead of good runs for Phil Jobson/Arwel Jenkins and Bob Bean/Malcolm Smithson.

In Class C2 it was another battle of the Hillman Avengers as Elliot Retallick/Tim Tugwell headed Andrew Stokes/Adrian McNally in the BHRC order. Simon Pickering and Paul Barbet (Ford Escort Mk1) claimed class C3, just as they did on the Red Kite.

In the Vintage Car Radiator Company Category 1, the Mini Cooper of Phil Harris/Richard Suter headed the Ford Cortina GT of Mike Barratt/Emily Retallick. Both crews enjoyed the road conditions, although Harris had a big scare when he nearly put the Mini off the road.

BHRC Rally North Wales award winners announced

The special award winners from the second round of the 2017 Mintex MSA British Historic Rally Championship, Rally North Wales (Saturday 1 April) have been announced.

For the second event running, David Hopkins and Tony Vart collected the award for the 'Best Improvement on Seeding', which is a set of axle brake pads from Mintex. They started 31st among the historic crews but made tremendous progress to finish a class-winning 18th in the historic field.

The 'Spirit of the Rally' product award from Fuchs Lubricants went to Jake Scannell and Adrian Stevens, who made their BHRC debut in their Category 4 Toyota Corolla. Despite losing a lot of time in SS4 and SS5 following a roll, they got going again and set a representative time in the final stage on their way to a class victory. The car was a little battered, but still running strongly at the finish.

Finally, Nick Elliott won the 'Hard Charger' award of a 20-litre jerry can from Green Valley Industrial Supplies. His attack on the opening stage in Gartheiniog drew rave reviews from onlookers and only the modern R5 cars of Osian Pryce and Euan Thorburn were quicker than Elliott through the stage, such was his pace.

Rally North Wales subject of economic study

Dolgellau based event used to gather data on economy during the rally weekend This year's North Wales Rally Services - Rally North Wales will be used as a pilot event to gather information on the local economy during the weekend. Conducted by The Welsh Association of Motor Clubs, the study will be used to gain a valuable insight into the economic value a motor rally brings to the area during an event.

The Wolverhampton and South Staffordshire Car Club Organised event takes place in Dolgellau on Saturday 1st April and will see around 100 crews contest the event in the nearby forests.

The following is extracted from The Welsh Association of Motor Clubs press release regarding the survey.

Rallying has taken place throughout the forests and lanes of Wales and beyond for many generations. Thankfully many villages, towns and cities recognise the many economic opportunities this brings as they welcome motorsport into their villages halls, hotels and businesses.

In recent years' motorsport has looked to capture the information that is so important when it comes to selling our sport to the wider community. The importance of the 'value' of the motorsport 'pound' spent locally during events was brought to the attention of many following the successful Rally4Wales campaign in 2016.

Managing Director Jamie Edwards is well aware of the benefit rallying brings to local communities in Wales.
?Rallying remains under the spotlight in Wales. Therefore, it's vital that everyone attending rallies in Wales contributes by feeding back what they bring to the economy. It doesn't matter if you are spectating on your local event and spending STG20 on fuel to attend or you are a major rally team running three cars on a rally. Every penny makes a difference to the rural Welsh economy and the impact of motorsport in Wales was brought to the attention of everyone during the Rally4Wales campaign last year. It's no secret that the sport brings tourism revenue of around STG15 Million per annum into Wales - but I urge everyone to play their part in helping showcase the financial and economic benefits that rallying brings to Wales. Whilst we cannot imagine a Wales without rallying, there are many businesses in Wales who would struggle without the added financial benefits a rally brings to the town."

Liz Saville Roberts, Member of Parliament for Dwyfor Meirionydd also realises the benefit of rallying to a region.
?Welsh forest rallying provides an important economic boost to many rural communities, such as the Dolgellau area in my constituency. When a rally takes place, businesses in the immediate area benefit from the influx of spectators, marshals and competitors who often spend a day or more in the area, spending their money locally."

Popular Dolgellau based event announces entries from across the UK

Around 100 drivers from across the country will head to Dolgellau this weekend as the North Wales Rally Services ? Rally North Wales welcomes a raft of top-line championships to the 1st April event.

The Wolverhampton and South Staffordshire Car Club organised rally returns to the market town once again in 2017 after two successful years in the region. With competitors tackling stages made famous by the World Rally Championship finale' Wales Rally GB, the Dyfi and Gartheiniog forest complex will see action from crews in a wide variety of machinery during the 45 mile event.

Crews from the Mintex MSA British Historic Rally Championship and Pirelli MSA Welsh Rally Championship return to the classic stages once again and are joined by The West Wales Rally Spares HRCR Stage Masters Challenge. The Jelf Insurance Welsh Clubmans Rally Championship and Brian Dennis Motorsport Welsh Historic Rally Championship also make a return with the Swift Shining Stars Series opening the new championship in Dolgeallau.

Leading British Rally Championship (BRC) ace and local hero Osian Pryce will head the field away from Gwyndaf Evans Motors on Saturday morning in his Ford Fiesta R5 as number one seed. Co-driven by Dale Furniss, the all-welsh crew are firm favorites to take the National B event win after a podium result at the BRC opener earlier this month.

Making the trip from Scotland, fellow BRC runners Euan Thorburn and Paul Beaton bring their Fiesta R5 from the Scottish Borders to Wales at number two in a bid for seat time ahead of the next round.

First of the Pirelli MSA Welsh Rally Championship crews are Lampeter's Andy Davies and Max Freeman in their Subaru Impreza. The duo is hoping to better their third place on last year's event. Fellow Welsh Championship crew Dylan Davies and Llion Williams line up just behind them in their newer version of the Impreza. 2015 Rally GB National Rally runner up David Howells and Jamie Edwards follow in their Subaru.

The crowd pleasing Mintex MSA British Historic Rally Championship (BHRC) will be led away by last year's National A winners Jason Pritchard and Phil Clarke in their Escort RS1800. The Builth Wells driver is closely followed by 2016 runners up Nick Elliott and David Price in their Escort. Ludlow's Joe Price & Chris Brooks cannot be discounted for a podium result in their Escort who start just ahead of fellow Ford driver and Devon resident Rudi Lancaster. He is joined by organising club Chairman Guy Weaver and the duo head the West Wales Rally Spares HRCR Stage Masters Challenge crews on the event.

Closing out the top ten are the Rowlands rallying family with Ieuan Rowlands and Emyr Hall at nine and Brother John, with Glenn Latham at ten, both in Ford Escorts.

Other notable entries include Matthew Robinson and Sam Collis who make the switch from the BHRC to a Subaru Impreza WRC for 2017. Two-time British Rally Champion and multiple event winner David Llewellin will return to the driver's seat in a Suzuki Swift as a gust driver of the Swift Shining Stars Series. Carl Williamson will sit alongside the Welshman.

Spectators are in for a real treat if they head into the forests to watch the action, as well as in close quarters in Dolgeallu. On Friday 31st March, competitors will be preparing for the event at the farmers mart in the town from 3pm onwards and the venue will also host the Rally Marketing Service Area throughout the day on Saturday 1st April.

The first car will be flagged away from Gwyndaf Evans Motors at around 9am and spectators will be able to watch the action up to five times in the nearby forests. The BG Landrovers Gartheiniog stage offers the first opportunity for Stage one at 09.40. The Geoff Jones Motorsport Big Ray test houses two runs, the first at 10.00 and the second at 13.30. The Jordan Road Surfacing Dyfi stage also offer a chance to catch two runs, once at 10.27 and the second pass at 13.50

The lucky crews will return to Gwyndaf Evans Motors in Dolgeallau for the prize giving ceremony back at the dealership at around 15.30 on Saturday afternoon.

Rally North Wales next for Mintex MSA BHRC

The 2017 Mintex MSA British Historic Rally Championship will continue with round two, Rally North Wales (Saturday 1 April) with the historics tackling 45-miles of classic Welsh stages in some of rallying's best-known forests.

The season started in mid-February on a damp and foggy Red Kite Stages when three crews marked themselves as the early season pace-setters in Ford Escort Mk2s. Nick Elliott and Dave Price emerged victorious that day over reigning champions Jason Pritchard and Phil Clarke while Joe Price and Chris Brooks showed typically strong pace before being sidelined with a failed diff.

Elliott/Price won Category 3 on the season opener while Pritchard/Clarke headed Category K at the start of what is likely to a fierce championship battle. Other Category 3 class winners were Ben Friend/Cliffy Simmons (Ford Escort Mk2) in D3 and David Hopkins/Tony Vart (Sunbeam Talbot) in D2.

Stanley Orr/Stephen McAuley set the early pace in the Capital Construction Category 2 as Orr stepped up to BDA power in his Escort Mk1, but rear suspension problems that had dogged their progress finally put them out in the second Crychan stage. Instead, the category was a battle of the Hillman Avengers as Elliot Retallick/Tim Tugwell headed Andrew Stokes/Adrian McNally after a day-long contest. Simon Pickering and Paul Barbet (Ford Escort Mk1) were third and claimed class C3.

In the Vintage Car Radiator Company Category 1, the Mini Cooper of Phil Harris/Richard Suter saw off the Ford Cortina GT of Mike Barratt/Emily Retallick.

The quality at the head of the historic field is very strong and a gaggle of quick cars will chase Elliott, Pritchard and Price on Rally North Wales. Devon-based Rudi Lancaster and Guy Weaver, chairman of the organising Wolverhampton and South Staffs Car Club, will be pushing hard, as will Orr/McAuley, Tim Freeman/Paul Williams and Friend/Simmons, who will again get their Pinto-powered Escort right up among the BDG machinery.

More strong Escort Mk2s are entered for Barry Stevenson-Wheeler/John Pickavance, James Potter/Bob Duck and Phil and Mick Squires along with the rapid Mk1 of Phil Jobson/Arwel Jenkins, a car once rallied by Noel Edmonds and famously rolled on Epynt.

Chasing the flying Friend in class D3 will be the Escort Mk2 Pinto of Rex Ireland/Adrian Scadding, while Category 2 variety comes from the Datsun 240Z of the hard-charging Jeremy Easson and Mike Reynolds.

The 1600cc class C2 in Category 2 will feature a three-way contest among the Escort Mk1s of Aziz Tejpar/Steve Davey, husband and wife Stuart and Linda Cariss and local crew Mal Bayliss/Siobhan Pugh. Offering welcome variety to the Escort pack is the Toyota Corolla of Jake Scannell/Adrian Stevens and the earlier Corolla model TE27 of Ian Beveridge/Paul Price.

Former British Champion David Llewellin returns to Rally North Wales - Event winner and Welsh rallying legend enters event as Suzuki Swift guest driver.

Two-time British Rally Champion and multiple event winner David Llewellin will return to the driver's seat for an appearance at this year's North Wales Rally Services - Rally North Wales at the wheel of a Suzuki Swift. Experienced co-driver Carl Williamson will sit alongside the Welshman.

The 1989 and 1991 rally winner will contest the event as a guest driver in the Swift Shining Stars series which is organised by Peter Gwynne Motorsport. Rally North Wales is the opening round of the championship and co-ordinator Peter Gwynne has secured a deal for Llewellin to use one of their cars for the event.

The Dolgeallu based event offers 45 competitive miles in the surrounding forests but back in the early 90`s when Llewellin contested the event, it was known as the Bulldog Rally and formed part of the British Rally Championship.

Some 16 years later, the event forms part of the Mintex MSA British Historic Rally Championship and the popular Pirelli MSA Welsh Rally Championship. The West Wales Rally Spares HRCR Stage Masters Challenge will also join the event, along with the Jelf Insurance Welsh Clubmans Rally Championship and Brian Dennis Motorsport Welsh Historic Rally Championship.

Having the former champion at Rally North Wales is a delightful prospect for Gwynne.
"A legend like David can't ever hang up his boots and we are honoured that Dai has agreed to drive one of our Swifts in the Shining Stars Rally Series" he says.
"It seemed only right it was Rally North Wales where he has won the event twice, we don't want to give him any excuses! We have asked him to drive for his feedback on the car, how it feels and handles and perhaps any modifications we need to make going forward. It's the same formula we used in Rallycross when Andrew Jordan drove for us. Most important though is we want him to have some fun and I know the other drivers as certainly looking forward to having him join them in the Swift camp".

The 1st April event is organised by Wolverhampton and South Staffordshire Car Club and Chairman Guy Weaver is looking forward to welcoming the Welsh rallying legend back to the sport.
"It's a real privilege to have David competing on the event and we are greatful for Peter's (Gwynne) effort to make it happen at Rally North Wales" he says.

"David is a true hero of many rally folk and we probably all have fond memories of him blasting through these very forests some years ago in either the Group B Quattro or Toyota Celica he was most well known for. Fans on the stages will be in for a real treat and it will be great to monitor his progress throughout the rally".

Starting from Gwyndaf Evans Motors in Dolgeallau at 9am on Saturday 1st April, crews will head out for three stages in the nearby forests before returning to the Livestock Market in the town for the mid event service halt. A further three stages await crews before the prize giving ceremony back at the dealership at around 3.30pm that afternoon.

Rally North Wales next for Mintex MSA BHRC

The 2017 Mintex MSA British Historic Rally Championship will continue with round two on Rally North Wales (Saturday 1 April) and entries are building well for the event that covers some of rallying's most famous gravel stages in the Dyfi region of Wales.
As the BHRC starts its third season under the management of the Roger Albert Clark Rally Motor Club, Nick Elliott/David Price, Jason Pritchard/Phil Clarke and Joe Price/Chris Brooks have shown themselves as the early season pacesetters, but a gaggle of rivals are chasing hard.

Rally North Wales will give crews the chance to compete on some fantastic stages and the event format means that only 15 of the 45 stage miles will be repeated. This should ensure good road conditions for all competitors.

With a very compact format, road mileage is kept to a minimum and central servicing will be sited in Dolgellau. Scrutineering and documentation will also be in Dolgellau on Friday afternoon.

The entry list passed the 50-mark with a month to go to the rally and the historic entry is building well, with 25 historic crews in the first 56 entries.

The Suzuki Swift Shining Stars Series will use the rally as its opening round as the single make formula announced at the Autosport Show in early January will also boast a guest driver for the event. The West Wales Rally Spares HRCR Stage Masters Challenge will also join the event, along with the Jelf Insurance Welsh Clubmans Rally Championship and Brian Dennis Motorsport Welsh Historic Rally Championship.

Building on the success of the past two years, organisers have devised a compact route for crews which utilise some of the best stages in the country within the Dyfi and Gartheiniog forests. To ensure maximum enjoyment for all crews throughout the field, there will be 30 miles of first usage on offer and just 15 miles repeated throughout the day. Along with the low road miles linking the stages, the organising team are confident that the event will be one of the best yet and are pleased to announce an entry fee of just ?550.

"It has been a tough time for Welsh rallying recently but we have been working exceptionally hard behind the scenes to create an event which will be both challenging and enjoyable whilst ensuring it is as cost effective as possible" says Clerk of the Course Richard Hinton. "And I believe we have done just that. We have some of the best stages in the world right on our doorstep and we have made the best use of them this year. They are in excellent condition too so crews across the field will benefit from smoother stages no matter if you are in a World Rally Car, Historic or clubman variant. I'm sure all competitors whether in championships or doing the event for fun will really enjoy what we have arranged for them" he says.

Starting from Gwyndaf Evans Motors in Dolgeallau at 9am on Saturday 1st April, crews will head out for three stages in the nearby forests before returning to the Livestock Market in the town for the mid event service halt. A further three stages await crews before the prize giving ceremony back at the dealership at around 3.30pm that afternoon.
