Owen Murphy Leads Historic Championship after Killarney

Posted: December 5, 2016 9:34 AM

Third place in the Rentokil Initial Killarney Historic Stages Rally yesterday saw Owen Murphy take maximum points in the Clonakilty Blackpudding Irish Tarmac Historic Championship. With Anthony Nestor on the pace notes, Murphy was driving the iconic ex-Russell Brookes Sunbeam Lotus and despite being hampered by a misfire for most of the day, he set some excellent times on the seven stage event. With the top two finishers Ryan Barrett & Melvyn Evans not registered for the series Murphy took full advantage and is the early leader of the championship.

Andy Johnson & Jim McSherry took fifth place in their fabulous Vauxhall Chevette HSR and move into second place in the championship. They finished third overall on last year's series, while Shawn Rayner & Declan Dear from England are third in the championship after an excellent sixth place in their Escort. Completing the top five after the opening round are Barry Jones (Escort) and Duncan Williams (Escort). Amongst the notable retirements were Stanley Orr and Alan Watkins both in Ford Escorts. The next round takes place in February with the Galway International Rally.

Killarney Historic Rally Starts 2017 Tarmac Championship Season

Posted: December 2, 2016 5:36 PM

The 2017 Clonakilty Blackpudding Irish Tarmac Historic Championship is about to get underway with the Rentokil Initial Killarney Historic Stages Rally. The event is the first of an eight round series and is the only dedicated Historic Rally on the Irish Rallying calendar. Last year's rally was cancelled at the eleventh hour due to flooding caused by Storm Desmond but the weather clerk promises to be kinder to Clerk of the Course Kevin Flannery and his team with cold dry conditions forecast.

As always the entry is interesting and varied with 47 cars entered for the main historic rally while as always the Modified event is well supported with some of the best talent in Ireland and the UK entered. Ryan Barrett is top seed in the Historic event and he will be followed by Melvyn Evans with both drivers in Escorts, while third seed Owen Murphy drives the ex-Russell Brookes Sunbeam Lotus.

Other drivers entered include Ernie Graham & Gareth Lloyd who had such a titanic battle in the 2015 Historic Championship, while Brendan McAree who came second in last year's series brings his beautiful Porsche 911 and Andy Johnson who was third in the 2016 series behind McAree is again in his Chevette. Stanley Orr is another very talented driver who will relish the challenge of the stages, while Dessie Nutt is a multiple winner of the event. Overseas interest includes Alan Watkins, Jimmy McRae, Duncan Williams, David Goose & Roger Moran all whom have sampled Irish Tarmac over the years. The action gets underway with the famous Molls Gap stage at 8:45am Saturday morning.

There are six more stages with Coolick, Anablatha and Gortnagane all to be tackled twice. The second running of Gortnagane will be the real sting in the tail as it will be run in darkness before the first car reaches the finish ramp just after 5:30pm.

More information can be found on www.irishtarmac.com, on our Facebook page Irish Tarmac Rally Championship and on twitter at @irishtarmactroa over the weekend.

Killarney and District Motor Club , will this weekend, celebrate the 20th anniversary of its Rentokil-Initial Killarney Historic Rally.

Conceived in 1996, by club member Maurice Nagle, father of current World Rally Championship star Paul, the vent has grown to become one of the most popular rallies in Europe.

It is the only event in Ireland that caters exclusively historic and modified cars only and over its two decades has attracted some of the biggest names in rallying. Multiple British Rally champion Jim McRae is back again this year for example. The idea for the rally came about after the Rally of the Lakes International Rally moved from its original December date to the May Bank Holiday weekend in 1993.

Nagle identified that drivers and fans missed the annual winter trip to Killarney , added to the growing interest in historic rallying, he decided to take on the challenging of running Ireland's first Historic Rally. Two decades later and event has gone from strength to strength. Over 150 crews from all over Ireland, the UK and even as afar a field as Barbados will take to the start ramp in Killarney town centre on Friday night. They face demanding stages over the 100km route on Saturday, starting as always with the daunting Moll's Gap, Ireland's most famous rally stage.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary, Killarney and District Motor Club have come to an arrangement with the organisers of the Rally of Legends, Italy's biggest historic motorsport event, and Saturday's event winner will receive a free entry and transportation of their rally car to San Marino next October.

The rally will be backed by Rentokil Initial Ireland as main title sponsor for the fourth consecutive year.

Rentokil Initial managing director Michael O'Mahoney said:
"On behalf of Rentokil Initial I am once again delighted to be associated with this year's Killarney Historic Rally. The event has grown from strength to strength and is a phenomenal success. Our desire to support the local community and businesses that have supported Rentokil Initial, so loyally over the many years is the reason why we are once again involved with Irelands most prestigious Rally".

RENTOKIL INITIAL KILLARNEY HISTORIC RALLY 2016

Leading the field away is Northern Irishman Ryan Barrett in his Ford Escort, winner of several British Historic Rally championship events over the years. Former Irish National champion, Melvyn Evans starts at two, the Welshman a regular visitor to these shores. Cork's Eoin Murphy starts at three in his ex-works Talbot Sunbeam.

There is a wealth of top overseas crews making up the bulk of the top 20 with, including an interesting entry from Roger Moran, a multiple British Hillclimb champion.

The top locals seeds are father and daughter crew, Pat and Tara Looney, in a Ford Escort. Former Irish National Historic Champions PJ Dowd and John Young from Tralee have a new engine fitted to their Talbot Sunbeam for the occasion and start one place ahead of Rathmore's Donal O'Connor, the current Southern 4 Historic Rally champion.

The ever-popular and keenly contested Modified rally , that runs at the back of the main historic field has also attracted a strong field, with local crew and British Junior Rally champions, Rob Duggan and Ger Conway the top seeds in a hired Ford Escort.

Jack Newman , 2nd on recent Kerry Winter Rally at Banna is also on the modified entry list and will be joined by top Escort drivers like Dessie Keenan- a former winner of the event and Hereford legend Phil Collins who has been making his way to Killarney since the late 1970s. Top local crews to look out for in this section include, Kevin O'Donoghue and Diarmuid Lynch (BMW M3); Charlie Hickey and Johnny Hickey (Ford Escort RS); Vincent O'Shea and Brian Hickey (Ford Escort); Tadhg O'Sullivan and Eoin O'Leary (Ford Escort); Aidan Buckley and Alan O'Doherty (Ford Escort Mk2); Timmy Enright Darina Joyce (Ford Escort Mk2); Tom Relihan and Maurice McElligott (Ford Escort Mk1) and Tommy Mason Connor Walsh (Ford Escort).

The rally starts on Friday evening with a Ceremonial start in main street Killarney at 7pm. The real action gets underway on Saturday morning with the iconic Molls Gap, often rated by rally drivers as being the best and one of the most-challenging stages in the world.

Coolick the Kilcummin village stage is always a favourite, just north of Killarney town, the stage runs straight through the village offering a great spectacle for the many fans to view. "Anablatha" is a newly designed stage in the Gneeveguilla area, sections of which have been used in the past by the Rally of the Lakes, it's a fast flowing stage with great surface and many junctions.

Gortnagane which runs parallel to the main Rathmore/ Killarney road, is highly regarded as one of the most technical, narrow, and demanding stages of Killarney rallying. The second run over Gortnagane, will be run under the cover of darkness.
