Irish crew Desi Henry and Liam Moynihan scored an emphatic victory on the DMACK Carlisle Stages (Saturday 11 June) after a superb field of cars battled over five special stages in the Newcastleton region of Kielder forest.
The rally, organised by the Roger Albert Clark Rally Motor Club, was a round of the Ravenol BTRDA Rally Series, the MSA English Rally Championship, the BTRDA Rally Challenge, the S G Petch Association of North East and Cumbria Car Clubs Stage Rally Championship, the Motoscope Northern Historic Rally Championship and the Association of Northern Car Clubs Forest Challenge. In addition, the event drew a strong entry of Scottish crews as well as several MSA British Rally Championship contenders seeking some extra gravel mileage.
A total of 111 cars left Carlisle on Saturday morning and 75 were finally classified as finishers. At a fraction under 14 miles, the Kershope stage was one of the longest gravel stages of the national rally season.
Henry and Moynihan headed an amazing field of quick cars and drivers including nearly a dozen R5 and WRC cars and took overall victory by 38s from Peter Taylor and Andrew Roughead (Ford Focus WRC). Taylor also finished second on the 2015 DMACK Carlisle Stages and won the inaugural event in 2013.
“It was a great rally and we really enjoyed it,” said Henry. “The stages were brilliant. We came here for mileage ahead of the Scottish Rally, the next BRC round, and we had a great day.”
Top of the BTRDA contenders was the Ford Fiesta of Charlie Payne and Carl Williamson. “You’ve got to respect Kielder and we had a 40-metre moment in a ditch,” said Payne. “It was a very good event and the 13/14 mile stages were fantastic.”
Heading the two-wheel drive entry was the Fiat 131 of Matthew Robinson and Graham Wilcock, which finished an excellent 21st overall as just three two-wheel drive cars finished in the top 30 overall. Another fine result came from Jordan and Paul Hone who were top 1400 finishers in their Proton Satria.

A superb field of 115 cars will contest the 2016 DMACK Carlisle Stages (Saturday 11 June), with an entry that is big on both quality and quantity.
The rally is a round of the Ravenol BTRDA Rally Series, the MSA English Rally Championship, the BTRDA Rally Challenge, the S G Petch Association of North East and Cumbria Car Clubs Stage Rally Championship, the Motoscope Northern Historic Rally Championship and the Association of Northern Car Clubs Forest Challenge. In addition, the organisers are delighted to have drawn a strong entry of Scottish crews keen to tackle these famous stages, which have not been used for rallying since the 2015 Carlisle Stages.
The route will feature just eight miles of double-used stages in a five-stage rally, with two stages of more than 13 miles. Great news for spectators, is that there is excellent viewing on four of the five stages and no charges whatsoever for spectator access.
Spectator information is now available on the event website.
Heading the field away are current BTRDA Gold Star pacesetters Luke Francis (Mitsubishi Evo 9) and Charlie Payne (Ford Fiesta), but they are followed by an amazing array of quick cars and drivers including nearly a dozen R5 and WRC cars. Notable among them are BRC contenders Jonathan Greer (Citroen DS3 R5) and Desi Henry (Skoda Fabia R5) as well as Euan Thorburn (Peugeot 208 T16 R5) and Matt Edwards in a DMACK-supported Ford Fiesta R5+.
Heading the two-wheel drive entry is Matthew Robinson in the stunning Fiat 131, while top seed among the 1400cc contenders is Mat Smith in his Proton Satria.
The Roger Albert Clark Rally Motor Club event will be based at the premises of H&H Auctions in Carlisle, close to junction 43 of the M6. The first car will start at 8am on Saturday and return to the finish at around 3pm. Scrutineering and documentation will run from 2pm until 7pm on Friday afternoon.

With just over a month to go until the 2016 DMACK Carlisle Stages (Saturday 11 June), the first 40 entries are already in and the organisers are expecting a run of entries after this weekend's Plains Rally.
The route will feature just eight miles of double-used stages and the route has been designed to limit the double-usage to the strongest forest roads. In response to competitor feedback from the 2015 rally, the Chamot Hill stage will not be used. No roads used on the recent BRC-based Carlisle Rally are being used and none of the roads on the DMACK Carlisle Stages have been used since the 2015 event.
"Entries are coming in very well and we're expecting a lot more after the Plains Rally," said Clerk of the Course Nicola Heppenstall. "We started 126 cars last year and we hope to at least match that number this year."
With continued title sponsorship from DMACK, the event offers 42 stage miles in the Kershope and Newcastleton complexes. A shakedown stage is available before documentation starts on Friday. The route includes two stages of more than 13 miles in length. The entry is Ł480, reducing to Ł430 for Rally First contenders.
The Roger Albert Clark Rally Motor Club event will be based at the premises of H&H Auctions in Carlisle, close to junction 43 of the M6. The first car will start at 8am on Saturday and return to the finish at around 2.30pm. Scrutineering and documentation will run from 2pm until 7pm on Friday afternoon.
The DMACK Carlisle Stages will be organised by the Roger Albert Clark Rally Motor Club. Event regulations are available from www.racrally.org, link below.

The route for the 2016 DMACK Carlisle Stages (Saturday 11 June) has been unveiled and will include two stages of more than
13 miles in length.
With continued title sponsorship from DMACK, the event will offer 42 stage miles in the Kershope and Newcastleton complexes
for contenders in the BTRDA Rally Series and several regional championships. The entry fee has been set at STG480, reducing
to STG430 for Rally First contenders.
The route will feature just eight miles of double-used stages and the route has been designed to limit the double-usage to
the strongest roads. In response to competitor feedback from the 2015 rally, the Chamot Hill stage will not be used.
The Roger Albert Clark Rally Motor Club event will be based at the premises of H&H Auctions in Carlisle, close to junction
43 of the M6. The first car will start at 8am on Saturday and return to the finish at around 2.30pm. Scrutineering and
documentation will run from 2pm until 7pm on Friday afternoon.
The action starts with a 3.5-mile stage known as Florida before a 13.5-mile stage in Newcastleton. SS3 is a 5-miler in Ash
Park before cars return to Rally HQ for the main service. The second loop starts with a 14.5-mile stage in Kershope before
a second run through Ash Park. Only 2.5 miles of the stages in Newcastleton and Kershope will overlap.
Clerk of the Course Nicola Heppenstall said:
"None of the stages have been used since the 2015 Carlisle Stages and were all
re-graded shortly after that event. The stages have had 12 months to settle and are in prime condition."
The rally will be a round of the Ravenol BTRDA Rally Series, the MSA English Rally Championship, the BTRDA Rally Challenge,
the S G Petch Association of North East and Cumbria Car Clubs Stage Rally Championship, the Motoscope Northern Historic
Rally Championship and the Association of Northern Car Clubs Forest Challenge.
The DMACK Carlisle Stages will be organised by the Roger Albert Clark Rally Motor Club. Event regulations will be available
from www.racrally.org during the weekend of 16/17 April.
