Entries are continuing to pour in for the 2016 Monaghan Stages Rally, which takes place on Sunday 24th April. The Hillgrove Hotel-backed event is a counting round of the Sligo Pallets Border Rally Championship. Clerk of the Course Brendan Flynn and his deputy Thomas Treanor have selected three excellent stages, to be run in the usual 3x3 format with centralised servicing in Monaghan town. The official launch took place this week and local accommodation is being booked up rapidly. Entry forms can still be downloaded from monaghanmotorclub.net.
2015 winners, Josh Moffett & Jason McKenna are returning to defend their crown. The pair have been targeting the Irish Tarmac & British Rally Championships in 2016 but couldn't resist the chance to compete on their local event. Josh will face stiff competition from his brother Sam who won the event in 2013 and 2014. Less than five seconds separated the brothers in 2015 and Sam will be anxious to get one over his younger brother. James Fulton will be sitting with Sam this year. Both drivers are entered in R5 specification Ford Fiestas.
Niall Maguire & Enda Sherry are another favourite crew for overall honours this year. Niall has racked up an unprecedented seven victories on his home event and with the event moving towards his local Ballinode area this year he will be trying hard to make it number 8. His navigator, Enda Sherry racked up four consecutive wins between 2007 and 2010. The pair will pilot the Ex Declan Boyle Subaru WRC which Tim McNulty drove to victory in 2011.
Stephen Wright is another young Monaghan man tackling the Irish Tarmac Rally Championship this year. Stephen, a former Billy Coleman award winner, is in his second season in a R5 Fiesta and finished 5th overall last year.
The 2wd battle is also fiercely contested and 2016 should be no exception. Gary McPhillips/Paul Sheridan are the top seeds and are hoping to end a run of bad luck which has resulted in four straight retirements on this event. Cavan pair Gary Kiernan & Chris Armstrong have put in impressive performances at the Mayo & Midland Stages rallies respectively and will hope to continue this form in Monaghan.
Donegal's Brian Brogan won the modified class at the West Cork Rally while Ryan Loughren topped the 2wd cars at the recent Circuit of Kerry Rally. Double Monaghan winner Dessie Keenan completes the top seeds and has shown his ability to be on the pace from the start despite limited appearances in recent years. The experienced Conor Foley is in the navigator's seat.
Competition is not limited to the top ten seeds with exciting class battles expected throughout the field. The event is Round 2 of the Sligo Pallets Border Rally Championship as well as a round of the Monaghan Club Championship.
