The Tiger Roars into Kerry

Posted: April 12, 2016 9:34 AM

Marty McCormack, along with navigator David Moynihan, had an extremely successful Circuit of Ireland shakedown at the Circuit of Kerry Rally last weekend.

The Tralee based event served as the perfect testing ground for this weeks iconic Circuit of Ireland rally. With seven stages totaling over 70 miles it was the perfect place for Marty and David to get re-acquainted with the TigerRisk Skoda Fabia on tarmac. It has been over eight months since Marty drove a rally car on a sealed surface, his last tarmac outing was on the vastly different roads of Rally Deutschland.

Stage 1 of the Circuit of Kerry Rally was a tough nine-mile test; Marty completed the stage 6th fastest overall, only beaten by the World Rally cars. By the time the cars had returned to morning service Marty held 6th overall, after achieving some top 4 times. He commented at service "It has been a good 3 stages, David and I are working really well together and McGeehan Motorsport have the Fabia working brilliantly!"

The next loop of stages was a repeat of the morning's ones. Marty put in a series of good times including a 3rd fastest on stage 5. When he clocked into the final service the timesheet showed the TigerRisk machine had moved up to 5th overall. With only one stage remaining it looked promising for a top 4 finish!

After a thorough check in service the Skoda was ready to go, Marty and David blasted into the final stage trying to push the car to eke out every tenth of a second. Unfortunately, this was all in vain as they were held up at the scene of an accident losing them considerable time. The TigerRisk car crossed the finish ramp in Tralee in 6th place overall, a mere 5 seconds away from 4th. Marty was still very happy with the day's rallying " We had a great day today, the car ran faultlessly and we showed our pace against the quicker World Rally Cars, but most importantly we have gained great confidence ahead of the Circuit of Ireland"

Marty and David now head to Belfast for the reconnaissance of the Circuit. Over the two-day recce they will get a feel for the stages, making and perfecting their pacenotes. Marty has competed on the event a number of times before, including last year where he finished 12th after brake issues and a puncture dropped him out of contention. The team are hoping for a much better result this year, keeping in line with Marty's talent! Over the rally you can keep up to date with Marty's progress on his Twitter and Facebook accounts: @martymccormack and Facebook.com/marty.mccormack1.

Marty is competing this season with the support of Tiger Risk Partners and P McCormack and Sons Ltd.

KUMHO RUNNERS DOMINATE START OF IRELAND'S NATIONAL RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP

Posted: April 12, 2016 9:33 AM

Kumho-shod drivers have won the first two rounds of Ireland's eight-round Triton Showers National Rally Championship.

Round 2 - Circuit of Kerry Stages

Last weekend (April 3) the rallying cousins Declan and Brian Boyle of Donegal took their Ford Fiesta WRC to a well-judged victory on Round 2 of the championship - the Circuit of Kerry Stages. Making the most of their Kumho C03 tarmac rally tyres, the pair led the event from start to finish, to win by the substantial margin of 44.1 seconds. The Boyles are new to the Kumho fold, so the event marked their first win on the Korean tyres and the second victory for Kumho in the 2016 championship.

Round 1 - Mayo Stages

The first round of the Series, the Mayo Stages, was held on March 6 and fell to the 2013 Irish Tarmac Champion and regular Kumho ambassador Garry Jennings of Fermanagh and his regular co-driver Rory Kennedy in their Subaru WRC.

Jennings used his Kumho tyres to master the wet and slippery conditions and held a 12 second lead after the first stage alone. By the end of the ninth and final one he had pulled a mighty 1 minute and 34.8 seconds ahead of the Subaru of second-placed Peadar Hurson/Damien Connolly.

The next round of the Triton Showers Championship is the Carlow Stages event on May 8.

Said Steve Thompson of Kumho Motorsport:
"These are great results for us that bode very well for the remaining six rounds. The surfaces encountered on Irish tarmac events are notoriously tricky, but over which our tyres have a long record of success. Long may it continue."

BOYLES PROVE TOO HOT ON CIRCUIT OF KERRY

Posted: April 12, 2016 9:30 AM

Leading from the start Donegal's Declan Boyle/Brian Boyle (Ford Fiesta WRC) took a commanding victory in the Tralee based Rose Hotel Circuit of Kerry Rally, the second round of the Triton Showers National Rally Championship.
In nigh on perfect conditions they finished 44.1 seconds ahead of the Ford Fiesta WRC of Clonmel's Roy White and his Cork co-driver James O'Brien, who won the Power Stage to move into the lead of the Triton series. Peadar Hurson/Damien Connolly (Subaru WRC) were 25.8 seconds further behind in third.
Maynooth's Paul Barrett/Declan Tumilty (Subaru) won the Group N category and Tyrone's Ryan Loughran and his Kerry co-driver Tony Healy emerged as winners of the Modified section.
The Meath/Kerry partnership of Gary McNamee/Kieran O'Donoghue (Honda Civic) took the laurels in the Junior event.

Boyle set the pace on the opening stage, Knights Mountain and led O'Riordan, who had reverted to his own Ford Fiesta WRC, by eight seconds - the latter was six seconds ahead of the Fiesta WRC of Roy White. Former national champion Peadar Hurson was fourth in a top six that was completed by top seed, Alan Ring (Ford Fiesta R5+) and the Skoda Fabia S2000 of Marty McCormack.
Ryan Loughran (Escort) led the Modified category and Paul Barrett (Subaru) held the advantage in Group N - a second in front of Shane Maguire (Mitsubishi).
Robert Woodside (Ford Fiesta R5) failed to finish the stage due to throttle related problems and although he re-joined under Rally2, the same problem manifested itself again on S.S. 4 bringing an end to his rally.
Boyle was quickest on the second stage and shared the same time (scratch) on S.S. 3 with Niall Maguire (Subaru WRC) - the Donegal man arrived at the Tralee service park with a lead of 19.9 seconds. His only problem was related to the handbrake. Second placed O'Riordan was untroubled while Hurson - 13.4 seconds further behind was unhappy with the handling of his Subaru.
Roy White occupied fourth and aside from fluffing the start of the opening stage he continued to show good pace. Fifth placed Niall Maguire (Subaru WRC) was trouble free. Marty McCormack, who was sixth, hit a chicane on the fifth stage damaging the front right side of his Skoda Fabia S2000.
Top seed Alan Ring (Ford Fiesta R5+) was forced out some two kilometres from the finish of the third stage with fuel related issues. A stage earlier Kenny McKinstry retired his S14 Subaru WRC with power steering problems.
Meanwhile, Desi Henry, one of many drivers on a shakedown for the Circuit of Ireland, held seventh in a top ten that was completed by the Mk. 2 Ford Escorts of Ryan Loughran and Frank Kelly and the S14 Subaru WRC of Kevin Barrett. In Group N, Paul Barrett continued to lead, his rival Shane Maguire was slowed by a turbo problem.
Elsewhere, Ed O'Callaghan (Escort) retired when an oil pipe came adrift on the second stage, fellow Limerick driver Paul Purtill (Escort) lost time with an off road excursion on the first stage.

On the repeat loop of three stages White was quickest on S.S. 4 while Boyle set the pace on the remaining pair of stages. At the final service Boyle led White by 53.1 seconds, the rally leader remarked that he had disconnected the handbrake after the fourth stage due to a sensor problem. White, who reckoned he was becoming more comfortable with his Fiesta, moved into second place on the sixth stage.
O'Riordan's car arrived at the service park showing the signs of an altercation with the scenery on S.S. 6 when he went off the road at a hairpin left - the right hand side of his Fiesta WRC showed the scars, he was 8.5 seconds behind White. Hurson in fourth reckoned his Subaru handled much better through the second loop - he was 1.2 seconds behind O'Riordan. Marty McCormack was at a comfortable pace and was followed by Niall Maguire and Desi Henry.
In the two-wheel drive category Ryan Loughran (Escort) moved 5.8 seconds ahead of Frank Kelly, who reckoned that the final stage of the loop didn't seem to favour his style. Kevin Barrett (Subaru WRC) was tenth. In Group N, Paul Barrett led Shane Maguire by 13.1 seconds.

Billy Coleman award winner Rob Duggan in the Vauxhall Adam had a difficult time. He retired on the opening stage with a mechanical issue and although he re-joined for the second loop of stages he was sidelined with a technical problem. On the final stage that counted as the Power Stage, White set the best time to take three bonus points. Boyle took victory and second in the Power Stage gleaming a total of 22 Triton Showers points - his first batch of the current season. White by virtue of winning the Power Stage now leads the series - a point ahead of Hurson, who was third overall following the demise of O'Riordan, who slid off near the final corner of then final sate. Derek McGarrity (Ford Fiesta WRC) was the principal non-starter.

PREPARATIONS ARE WELL ADVANCED FOR THE 2016 CIRCUIT OF KERRY STAGES RALLY:

Posted: February 23, 2016 3:59 PM

With just six weeks to go preparations are nearing completion by The Kerry Motor Club for the longest running rally in the Kingdom The 2016 Rose Hotel Circuit of Kerry Stages Rally on Sunday April 3rd. The Kerry Motor Club are delighted to welcome and thank The Fels Point Hotel which has just been rebranded The Rose Hotel as main sponsor and Rally Headquarters for this event which is Round 2 of both the Triton National and Top Part West Coast Rally Championships, who are back to support us for yet another year.

We are also delighted to have the support of Aherns BMW, Kellihers Toyota and Tralee Chamber Alliance again this year. We would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of our Sponsors and Rally Programme advertisers, as without your support and generosity events like this would not be possible. We would also like to thank the Residents and Landowners who reside on the 3 stages for their co-operation and patience and for putting up with the inconvenience in allowing us to close their roads. Without your support there would be no rallying in the Kingdom.

We wish to extend to all competitors and spectators a "Cead Mile Failte" to Kerry for the rallying, the hospitality and the "craic", for this, the 42nd year of rallying in The Kingdom. This year's rally will be a seven stage event with three stages completed twice and Knights Mountain run a third time as the final power stage. These special stages have been carefully selected by clerk of the course Tom Barrett and Safety Officer Richard Talbot. Tom and his team have being working very hard over the past few months to get this rally up and running.

The rally will begin on Saturday morning April 2nd with crews and service teams from all over Ireland, and the UK descending on the town of Tralee. The crews will sign on at The Rose Hotel and then make their way out to make their notes and familiarisation of the 3 stages before they tackle them in competition on Sunday morning.

Mechanical scrutiny of all rally cars takes place at Kingdom Crash Repairs Premises in the Monavalley Industrial Estate, Tralee from 2 to 7pm on Saturday afternoon with paper scrutiny taking place in Rally Headquarters up to 7.30pm. The cars will be parked in Pairc Feirme which is the large car park adjacent to The Rose Hotel, Fels Point overnight awaiting take off at 10.15am on Sunday morning. This car park will also be the Service Park for the rally where service of the rally cars will take place throughout Sunday.

On Sunday morning the cars will leave The Rose Hotel and head towards Castleisland to tackle Special Stage 1 'Knights Mountain'. Having completed this stage the crews will head towards Abbeyfeale to tackle Special Stage two 'Headley's Bridge'. Upon completion of this stage the crews will head towards Brosna to tackle Special Stage three 'Mounteagle'. This loop will be repeated once more after the cars are refuelled and checked over back in the Service Park. The crews are expected back at the Finish Ramp at The Rose Hotel in Tralee at 5.30pm on Sunday evening where the winners will be crowned.

Regulations will be available shortly.
