Saturday 1st August sees Enniskillen Motor Club run their fabulous Erne Trophy Sprint on St Angelo's Airfield. Spectators will see a tremendous variety of cars over some 17 Classes from Class 1 road Going Series Production Cars right through to Class 17 - Vintage cars with Sports Libre Saloons, Single Seater Racing Cars plus the Historic Class and of course the popular and hotly-contested Rally Car Class in between. The Motor Club have received over 60 entries at time of going to press and with double Championship points available on the day there should be plenty more to come.
The Sprint is a counting round of the SW Adair ANICC Sprint Championship.
Local interest will be focused on Jonni McDaid and his Dad, Tommi sharing their Peugeot Cup Car and Ballinamallard man, Davy Forde in his immaculate ex-works Ford Puma. In the Historic Class, Robert Coulter and daughter Olivia bring their rapid little Ford Anglia 105E and winner of this class last year was Gerry McGarrity in his Cooper 'S' closely followed by Mervyn Johnston in his similar car. Killedeas youngster Darran Flanagan will share his new Ford Fiesta with Ruairi Jones from Derrygonnelly, while Rodney Donaldson will wheel out his unusual 2-litre Renault Clio with Bellek man Damian McGauran, who usually contests the 2-litre Class on the Forestry stages, giving him a run for his money in his Toyota Corolla. The most unusual Escort will be that of Jim Hutchinson: a Sonny Howard-built Escort Mk I replica - a space frame fibreglass special saloon with a 350 bhp Vauxhall engine!
Competitors will follow the same route as last year: two laps traversing the outer roads of the perimeter of the runway giving approximately 2.5 miles per lap.
The action starts at 10.00am with the first Practice Run followed by the Official Runs at 1.00pm. Competitors are to get 2 Practice Runs and 3 Official Runs with best run to count. Seamus Morris in his Championship-winning Pilbeam [single-seater] set the Fastest time of the Day last year and once again should be the man to beat. Declan Gannon and his team have provided free on-site parking and disabled parking close to the Paddock where spectators can view the "men and women and their Flying Machines" between runs. Admission fee of just ?5 with U-16s free and ample hot food and toilet facilities plus the Airport Cafe mean that all spectator needs are catered for on what promises to be a great day's motorsport.
