Round 2 - 2015 West Coast Rally Championship

Local hero Alan Ring wins the Fel's Point Hotel Circuit of Kerry

Posted: March 10, 2017 6:46 AM

It was a delighted Alan Ring who drove his Subaru Impreza World Rally Car over the finish ramp of the Fel's Point Hotel Circuit of Kerry Rally in Tralee on Sunday evening.
The Castleisland man co-driven by West Cork man , Adrian Deasey led his home rally from start to finish although he did survive a late challenge from Welsh visitor Steve Wood in a similar car.
Ring was just three seconds in front of Wood, who is co-driven by Abbeyfeale's Keith Moriarty, as the lead cars entered the sixth and final stage at Desmond's Grave.
The Munster Joinery man held his composure and set fastest time over the undulating back roads between Knocknagoshel and Ballymac. Wood said he over drove the car on the final stage, and somehow, dropped ten seconds to the flying Ring.

The Munster Joinery man said:
"It was a proud moment to drive through my home town this morning with number one on the door but even better to be back here as winner of my home national rally. This is only our fifth event in this car, there is a lot more to come."

Ring will contest this coming weekend's Monaghan Stages Rally as part of his Triton Showers National Rally championship and the local Rally of the Lakes in two weeks time.

Wood's slow time through stage promoted former Circuit of Kerry winner Derek McGarrity and his Beaufort co-driver Diarmuid Falvey to second. The Antrim/Kerry pairing were holding third place for most of the day ? their biggest issue all Day was readjusting to each other having not shared a rally car since the Galway International Rally in 2009.

Kerry Winter Rally winner Daniel Cronin finished fourth. Navigated by Killarney's Shane Buckley, the Bantry man's older Impreza was never going to match the more modern machinery around them and they did extremely well to set the times they did.

Ballyduff-born Kevin Barrett and Sean Mullally were fourth and took home the best Kerry Motor Club crew trophy in another Impreza. Their run was hampered by a lack of fifth gear for much of the latter part of the rally.

Mike Quinn looked certain to take this award, and honours in the two-wheel drive section of the rally but put his Ford Escort off the road on the third run over Mount Eagle.

Other local crews to do well included Killarney's Derek Daly and Brian Doherty who finished second in Group N in their Mitsubishi Lancer. Charlie and Johnny Hickey were also second on their class , the Escort crew's pace improved in the second half of the rally after they changed the gear ratios to suit the fast north Kerry roads. Charlie's brother John and co-driver John McCarthy were third on their class in their unique Subaru powered Escort. Glenflesk's Denis Hickey and Sean Nolan were third in their class, as was Tralee's Darren Young and Sean Walsh. Lixnaw's Keith McCarthy guided Limerick driver Ken Ryan to victory in class 11R while late entrants Kevin O'Sullivan and Martin O'Riordan were second in class nine.

County Louth's Phillip McKibbin co-driven by Ray Stack from Ballyheigue won the Historic Rally from defending champions PJ Dowd and John Young.

Ardfert's Pat Lawlor and Kevin Roland were the junior winners.

Rally Launch - 19 Apr

Posted: March 17, 2015 9:24 AM

Kerry Motor Club will officially launch the 2015 Fel’s Point Hotel in Association with Advanced Cleaning Services Circuit of Kerry Stages Rally with a special event at the Fel’s Point Hotel on Sunday.

The 41st running of the Tralee-based club’s flagship event will take place on Sunday April 19.

Clerk of the course Tom Barrett said:
”Those who have competed in Kerry over the last 40 years knows only too well the quality of the Rallying, the warm Hospitality and the Mighty Craic which is all part of a Kerry Rally weekend. Fel’s Point Hotel will continue as main sponsor for 2015 and I would like to welcome Advanced Cleaning Services as Associate sponsor and to thank both companies for their continued interest and support. For 2015 the event will once again be Round 2 of the 2015 Overall, Junior and Historic Top Part West Coast Rally Championship, the longest running and most successful championship in Irish rallying.”

Headquarters for the event will be the Four Star Fel’s Point Hotel in Tralee. To help competitors save costs, there will be just two stages to recce, all in a compact route making up the six-stage event.

Mr Barrett added: “The rally will be run over two former Circuit of Ireland/Circuit of Munster Classic Stages with low road millage, Rally Headquarters, Pairc Feirme ,The Service Area are centralised in the same location adjacent to the Fel’s Point Hotel. Scrutiny is just minutes away at the Kingdom Crash Repair Centre in the Monavalley Industrial Estate. Competitiors who retire on any of the first 3 stages will be able to avail of “Rally 2” rules, which allow competitors re-join the rally after retirement and get value for their entry fee.

The entry fee will be €475, Junior and Historic competitors pay €295 for the first 4 stages. If Junior and Historic competitors wish to pay €475 they will have the opportunity to have their Junior rally decided on the first 4 stages and be part of the overall rally over the 6 stages.”

For 2015 the club has decided to support the clubman competitors who make up the meat of the entry. To this regard the club is offering an unique prize fund of €1500 to be divided equally between the drivers of the first Ford sponsored by Lyons Ford of Limerick and Nenagh, the first Toyota sponsored by Kellihers Toyota.ie and the first Honda sponsored by Relihans Car Dismantlers and Car Spares, to finish the six-stage 100km event. This prize fund is aimed directly at club drivers and competitors using World Rally Cars are not permitted to enter this separate race.

A separate King/Queen of the Stages competition sponsored by Aherns BMW.ie and WCP Services will also be incorporated into the event. Crews will get three chances to set the fastest time on each stage. The car with the fastest time of the day on each stage will walk away with the King/Queen trophy and they will leave Tralee with bragging rights that will last until the 2016 event.

A ceremonial start will take place in the centre of Tralee on Saturday before the event.

Southwest Motorsport Rally Rescue as well as the Irish Red Cross Ambulance Service will do an demonstration of a road traffic accident scene and what is involved in the safe removal of passengers from the damaged vehicles.

Mr Barrett added: “Sunday’s event, which takes place between 2 and 5pm will rally enthusiasts and fans the opportunity to join, become a member and be more involved with a very active and long established motor club.

It is also an opportunity for our sponsors and advertisers to display their ware and hopefully get some business.  It will be an ideal opportunity to reminisce over 40 plus years of rallying in the Kingdom.”

PRESS RELEASE 1

Posted: February 20, 2015 9:35 AM

Kerry Motor Club has announced a range of incentives to make this year’s Fels Point Hotel in association with Advanced Cleaning Services Circuit of Kerry Rally more competitive than ever.

The April 19th event is the second round of the Top Part West Coast Rally Championship.

The West Coast Rally championship is now in its 22nd year and is already enjoying unprecedented support in 2015, the opening round, The Birr Stages Rally, at the end of this month, has attracted a full entry and Kerry Motor Club is keen to maintain that interest, especially amongst the club drivers.

To that end the club has put up a prize fund of €1500 to be divided equally between the drivers of the first Ford, Toyota and Honda to finish the six-stage event. This prize fund is aimed directly at club drivers and competitors using World Rally Cars are not permitted to enter this separate race.

Newly appointed clerk of the course Tom Barrett said:
“There is huge interest in the Birr rally and they have attracted over ten World Rally Cars to their event. We are expecting similar numbers in Tralee in April and this will be great for the spectators but we cannot forget the clubmen either, those who make up the meat of the entry and that is why we are offering this unique prize fund to the drivers of the three most popular makes on the Circuit of Kerry over the last few years.”

A separate King/Queen of the Stages competition will also be incorporated into the event. The rally will be run over two former Circuit of Ireland/Circuit of Munster Classic Stages with low road millage in the North Kerry area. Each of the stages will be visited three times in the run of the day and the driver who sets the fastest time of the day on both stages will be eligible for this new award. Again this competition is only open to club drivers.

Mr Barrett added:
“Crews will get three chances to set the fastest time on each stage. We will give the King/Queen of each stage a trophy and they will leave Tralee with bragging rights that will last until the 2016 event.”

Members of the Event Organizing Team of Kerry Motor Club have spent the winter months carrying out a route survey and are currently preparing the various safety plans and road closure requests that will need to be approved by Motorsport Ireland and Kerry County Council before further details of the rally will be announced.
