Round 6 - 2014 MSA Asphalt Rally Championship
Posted: August 15, 2014 11:09 AM
The REIS MSA Asphalt Rally Championship makes its second visit of the year to the
Epynt Military Ranges, in the Brecon Beacons, on 24th August for the Old Forge
Garage Mewla Rally and, having won the event last year, Peter Lloyd leads the 100+
competitors away from the start in his Subaru Impreza WRC.
However, while Lloyd is not involved in the battle for this year’s Championship title,
for those who are, the race is certainly hotting up! Defending MSA Asphalt Champion
Damian Cole and co-driver Elliott Edmondson (Ford Focus WRC) have their eyes on
what would be the driver’s fifth consecutive title but, as dropped scores come into
play, they still have work to do if they are to achieve their goal.
After two consecutive retirements, early season leaders Steve Simpson/Patrick Walsh
(Subaru Impreza WRC) will be looking for a good result on the Mewla. Their track
record on Epynt speaks for itself but they have yet to win this particular one - they
were leading after the first few stages in 2013 but an errant turbo pipe on one of the
longest stages of the rally cost huge amounts of time, pushing them down to an
eventual 10th place.
John Indri/Peter James were runners-up here last year in their Darrian T90. Having
joined the four-wheel drive turbo-charged brigade in an Impreza this season, 5th
overall last time out on the Tyneside Stages should give them cautious optimism that
the initial problems with the car have been sorted. Right behind them, and resisting
the temptation to move away from two-wheel drive, Simon Mauger has Jonathan
Hawkins for company in his Escort MkII on this occasion. Although he has scored
maximums in the Millington Rear-Wheel Drive Challenge each time he has appeared,
Mauger is currently third in the points table, behind Darren Atkinson and Keith
Robathan. However, in the absence of both drivers on this occasion, Mauger is
presented with a golden opportunity to move to the front,
Rounding off an impressive Top Six, and fresh from their recent win on the Otterburn
Ranges, are Peter Taylor/Andrew Roughead in their Fiesta S2400. Having shown
potential on a number of events earlier in the Championship, only for their efforts to
be thwarted, it all came good at the beginning of August which, apart from anything
else, will do wonders for their confidence.
Epynt ‘expert’ Bob Fowden, with Ashley Trimble in the co-driver’s seat, and Tim
Wilson, who has yet to nominate a guide for the day, are next in their respective
Imprezas, while the Darrian T90 of Richard Merriman/Kath Curzon and Roger Hicks/
Terry Martin’s rapid Escort MkII complete a very competitive Top Ten.
And so the quality continues - Alex Laffey/Jack Morton’s string of good results in
their Fiesta R5+ sees them up to third in the Championship with three rounds to go.
Their last visit to Epynt, for the Tour in March, was the scene of their only DNF thus
far and, consequently, there is some unfinished business here! Rob Tout/Dan Holley
have been absent for much of the season but have previously shown what they can
achieve in their Group N Lancer EVO9, while Adrian Spencer/Mark Hewitt are getting
used to an Impreza that has had a lot of money spent on it in recent times. The signs
are good - they were 15th on the Tyneside and they’ve also posted Top Ten finishes on
the last couple of Mewla Rallies...
This year’s Old Forge Garage Mewla Rally takes its usual base at the Royal Welsh
Agricultural Showground, in Builth Wells, from where the first car will leave at 8.00am
on Sunday 24th August. Fourteen special stages, and 80 competitive miles, later the
first car (will it still be Peter Lloyd?...) is due to return to the Showground at 5.00pm.

Epynt Motor Club is delighted to welcome the Old Forge Garage incorporating Dennis Motor sport as sponsors of the Mewla Rally. This family run business by father and son, Brian and Tim Dennis are no strangers to motor sport. Brian has been rallying Minis for over forty years whilst Tim who started on two wheels now hill climbs one of the very special Mini’s run by Dennis motor sport. The Old Forge Garage has for many years been associated with he Gremlin Rally going back to the days of the Motoring News Championship. We hope this new association with the Mewla Rally will be as long and special.
Plans for this year’s August bank holiday weekend Mewla Rally are well underway. The event will consist of 80 stage miles over 14 stages on the Epynt Ranges. The entry fee is held at the 2013 price of £345.
The service area will once again be situated on Mabion’s Way. As the centre road is unavailable, this means that we can make full use of all the challenging roads that Epynt has to offer, including the German Village.
The rally is a qualifying round of the REIS MSA Asphalt Rally Championship, Quantum King of Epynt, Steve Harkness Welsh National Tarmacadam Championship, the ANWCC Stage Rally Championship and the Millington RWD Challenge.
The winning crew of the Road Rally Class on this year's Old Forge Garage Mewla Rally will receive a free entry on the 2014 DG Jones Agri Ltd Powys Lanes Rally. The event, which is also organised by Epynt Motor Club, will be held on November 8/9th. It will be based in Builth Wells with a 110 mile route on maps 147 and 148. The Powys Lanes Rally was voted best event in the WAMC Road Rally Championship last year.
