Round 5 - 2014 MSA Asphalt Rally Championship
Posted: July 19, 2014 8:38 AM
The organisers of the Wilkinson Maintenance Tyneside Stages Rally are delighted that the event already has a full entry of 100 cars and, as they are still receiving enquiries from potential competitors, a reserve list has been opened. It is a fact of life that, for any number of reasons, there will be some withdrawals between now and 3rd August and, consequently, no-one should be deterred from putting their names forward.
For those wishing to do just that, regulations/entry forms are still available to download from the event website, link below

With more than three weeks to go until the Wilkinson Maintenance Tyneside Stages Rally takes place on 3rd August, the number of entries received has already surpassed that of twelve months ago and, with the latest round of the REIS MSA Asphalt Championship having only just taken place, the list is likely to increase still further in the coming days.
John Stone/Carl Williamson (Skoda Fabia WRC) travel to the north-east as leaders of the MSA Championship but are under considerable pressure from a number of other crews, not least of whom will be defending champion - and winner of the Tyneside Stages for the past three years - Damian Cole and co-driver Elliott Edmondson.
Following retirement from the recent ALMC Stages Rally in Ireland, Steve Simpson/ Patrick Walsh (Subaru Impreza WRC) will also be looking to get their season back on track and have a proven track record on the Otterburn Military Ranges.
For those wishing to join them, regulations/entry forms are available to download from the event website (below).

In addition to hosting the REIS MSA Asphalt Rally Championship, the Wilkinson Maintenance Tyneside Stages Rally (3rd August) is also the sixth of nine qualifying rounds in the AS Performance North of England Tarmacadam Rally Championship.
After good runs on the North West Stages and the Ingliston-based DCC Stages where they doubled their points score by playing their ‘joker’, Ian & Kathryn Forgan lead the series in their Ford Ka. Although his Honda Civic Type R suffered a major engine blow-up last time out, Nick Thorne is only a couple of points behind the leaders, while multiple NoE Champion Barry Lindsay (Peugeot 106) and Darren Doherty (Subaru Impreza) are each just one behind him! It is perhaps worth noting that none of these three has played their own joker and, with the series reaching its conclusion back on the Otterburn Ranges in early November, there is a long way to go yet!

One of the more recent entries for this year’s Wilkinson Maintenance Tyneside Stages Rally has come from Tommy Graham and Mike Bailey in a Mitsubishi Lancer EVO9. Tommy, who is a falconer by profession, comes from Bedale in North Yorkshire and actually finished 3rd overall in the MSA Asphalt Rally Championship back in 2007, the year that Steve Simpson won the title.
Fast forward seven years and not only has Tommy returned for a serious attempt at the series for the first time in a while but, after the first three rounds, Steve Simpson is leading overall in his Subaru Impreza WRC!...
With six weeks to go until 3rd August, it’s already obvious that Tommy & Mike will face some serious opposition in Class B13. Subaru Imprezas in the hands of Bob Grant and Michael Glendinning, plus another Lancer EVO driven by Richard Slinger, will all be bidding for supremacy over the Otterburn Ranges on the day!
