Round 4 - 2014 Tarmac Rally Championship
Posted: September 14, 2017 9:04 AM
After an excellent drive all weekend, Donegal cousins Declan & Brian Boyle have become the first all Donegal crew to win their home event since Vincent Bonner & Seamus McGettigan achieved the same feat back in 1983. With James Cullen (twice) being the only other previous home winner, Declan has joined a very exclusive club and his position at the top of the leader board of the Clonakilty Blackpudding Irish Tarmac Championship looks even more secure with just two rounds to go. The winning margin in the end over Monaghans Sam Moffett & James O’Reilly was 34.8 seconds but it was not without its scares along the way. Garry Jennings and Rory Kennedy had to be content with third having never really got to grips with the pace of the leading pair over the weekend, while another former Tarmac Champion, Derek McGarrity was fourth overall.
Over 130 crews started the Donegal International Rally the fourth round of the Clonakilty Blackpudding Irish Tarmac Rally Championship and despite the withdrawal of Eugene Donnelly there was still a very strong field assembled. Boyle was the favourite having been the quickest man in the championship so far despite a non-finish in Killarney. The winner of that event and also last year’s Donegal was Sam Moffett and he led after the first three stages albeit by only 1.6 seconds from Boyle. Jennings was back in third with Darren Gass (2012 Tarmac Champion) in fourth and Donagh Kelly in fifth. Moffett lost the lead with a puncture but still held onto second behind Boyle at the end of the first day. Gass moved ahead of Jennings to fourth with Kelly and McGarrity in fifth and sixth. Pat Kirk held a slender advantage over Josh Moffett in Group as they held seventh and eighth respectively overnight.
The longest part of the rally was the 8 stage second day and by the time the opening pair of stages (Garrygort and Knockalla) were completed the lead had stretched out to 8.4 seconds on Boyles favour as the rest of the pack struggled to keep pace, particularly Kelly who lost some time with clutch problems. The same pair of stages ran again as SS9 and SS10 and Boyle extended the lead to 12.6 second as Gass began to set some very fast times in the hired Melvyn Evans Subaru. Kelly was still in clutch bothers while Jennings was still struggling to get near the pace of the leading trio and Derek McGarrity was now a long way back in sixth. The afternoon stages saw Boyle continue to extend his lead and by overnight it was up to 37.2 seconds from Moffett, but Darren Gass had crashed and lost several minutes (he later withdrew overnight). This moved Jennings into a safe third place as Donagh Kelly had also retired having slid off the road, but his chances of winning Donegal like he did in 2012 were fast receding.
The third day contained six stages which were the classic Glen, Atlantic Drive and Fanad stages all repeated. Moffett needed to make an early statement and his Fiesta WRC was only 26.5 second behind with four stages left. Boyle was a little bit cautious as his engine had shown signs of problems but by the end of Fanad had pushed the lead out to just over 30 seconds. He made no mistakes over the final three stages to come home with a 34.8 second advantage after three tough days of action. Jennings too third place over three minutes further back after a small fire caused them some concern. Derek McGarrity came home in fourth place while Josh Moffett took fifth overall and the Group N honours after another outstanding drive. Josh Moffett had a comfortable margin back to Stephen McCann in sixth place but McCann still holds a narrow advantage with two rounds to go. Aaron McHale came home in seventh and took third place points in the category.
Tarmac Championship Provisional Points after 4 rounds – 1st Boyle 79, 2nd S. Moffett 50, 3rd J. Moffett 42.5, 4th Jennings 38, 5th Kelly 33
In the Modified Championship Declan Gallagher still leads despite being forced out with mechanical problems after only four stages of his home event. Third place in the national section behind Gary McPhillips and Conor Harvey saw Frank Kelly take maximum points and move into third place overall in the championship behind Wesley Patterson who closed the gap to just ten points behind Gallagher. Brian Brogan had an excellent drive to come home fourth overall in the National section and second in the points.
Modified Championship Provisional Points after 5 Rounds – 1st Gallagher 57, 2nd Patterson 47, 3rd Kelly 27
The Historic Rally saw Seamus O’Connell win the category but the big winners were Aidan O’Connor (Escort Mk1) and Andy Johnson (Chevette HSR) who moved up to third and fifth overall in the championship.
Historic Championship Provisional Points after 5 Rounds – 1st Moynihan 33, 2nd Cunningham 30, 3rd O’Connor 24

2014 Pirelli Star Driver Daniel McKenna and his co-driver Arthur Kierans are undertaking final preparations for one of Ireland’s most popular motorsport events, the Donegal International Rally.
Daniel and Arthur are heading to the North West of Ireland in the Scanbitz Mark II Ford Escort to continue development work for Pirelli with their P7 Classic tyres and the tyres will certainly receive a stern test over the duration of the event, the only 3 day international rally in Ireland. Daniel has already had a trio of outings in the Escort this season in Roscommon, Monaghan and the Isle of Man but Donegal brings a unique challenge, one which the Pirelli Star Driver can’t wait to start.
Speaking ahead of the weekend Daniel said:
“Donegal is a special rally to me and I’ve been lucky to have sampled success there in 2011 when I won the national section of the event. The rally is massively challenging, contains fantastic stages and even beyond Ireland it is held in high esteem. Shortly after I became this year’s Pirelli Star Driver, Matthew Corby (Pirelli UK Motorsport Operations Manager) specifically stated he wanted me to do Donegal as part of my tyre development programme. That gives you an idea of how highly regarded the rally is. There’s an incredibly strong national entry this year, the strongest I’ve seen and I aim to be right in the middle of the battle. It should prove to be a great test for myself, the car and the Pirelli P7 Classics.”
The action on the Donegal International Rally gets underway on Friday with the traditional town centre start in Letterkenny before the crews set off to tackle 3 stages to be done 2 times. Saturday features 4 stages which are also repeated including the fearsome Knockalla stage while Sunday sees 3 more stages in the shape of Glen, Atlantic Drive and Fanad, all to be repeated. In total the crews will see 20 special stages over 3 days of rallying.
You can follow Daniel’s progress over the weekend in Donegal and throughout the year by following him on Twitter @DMKMotorsport and Facebook at Daniel McKenna Rallying or by checking out his website, www.danielmckenna.net

It’s a long trip from Clonakilty to Letterkenny for Cal McCarthy and co-driver Eamonn Dullea. They have already clocked up over 1000 miles on the recce for this weekend’s Donegal International Rally, as they prepare for their debut on this epic three day event.
“It’s a tough rally” says Cal. “We were able to get two passes over each stage on the recce, and it’s our first time in Donegal, so we have a lot to learn. There are a real mixture of stages, with some nice flowing ones on Friday to warm up, and obviously the classics like Atlantic Drive and Fanad which look fantastic. Saturday looks a tough day with some tricky stages, with bumps and shiny tar. It’s a big day and we really want to make it through to Sunday.”
It’s the Carbery Plastics team’s third event this year on their assault on class 11 of the Clonakilty Black Pudding Irish Tarmac Modified Championship. The season started off superbly with an eighth place finish and first in class on the West Cork Rally, but on the last round in Killarney they were robbed of another excellent result with a gearbox failure on the final stage. Preparation expert Donal Healy has been working hard to turn out the Honda Civic in tip-top condition for the three days of punishment ahead, and a last minute power steering problem was being cured at the time of writing.
“For sure it will be hard on the cars, as they are quite undulating stages. There will be a lot of fast local driver’s to watch out for too in the class, and we need to finish after out Killarney retirement. Our aim is to finish, and we would like to try and get into the top three in the class by the finish.”
The team take the long trek up North for scrutiny on Thursday, before the Friday morning start in Letterkenny. Conor the other team driver will be acting as part of the service crew this weekend, before rallying in Ravens Rock the following weekend.
Keep up to date with the team’s progress on their Facebook page- Carbery Plastics Rally Team and Twitter @CPRallying. The new website www.carberyplasticsrallying.com will also be up-dated with the latest news

It’s on.
After weeks, if not in fact months, of rumour, speculation and cryptic clues the organisers of the Donegal International Rally Ireland have announced the arrival of the Holy Grail of Road Racing: Michael Dunlop has entered the Donegal Rally. The ‘King of the Road’ is coming to Donegal.
On the 20th June 2014, the World’s quickest road racer, Michael Dunlop will be coming to the Donegal International Rally Ireland. Fresh from his record breaking 4 TT wins, becoming the first rider to win four TTs in consecutive years when he secured his first success in the blue-riband Senior TT event on the Isle of Man event last week, Dunlop confirmed he will be switching from 2 wheels to 4 wheels to make his debut behind the wheel of a 300-bhp Ford Escort, partnered by local co-driver James McNulty.
Donegal Motor Club Chairman Brian Brogan today confirmed the news that will electrify Irish rally fans and motorcycle fans alike, and send shockwaves through the regular competitors in the Irish Tarmac rally series.
Mr. Brogan said:
“We’ve hoped for a long time this would come off. We can’t wait to see Michael tackle the classic stages like Knockalla and Atlantic Drive. Mind you, he’ll be going a lot slower than he usually travels but we think he’ll enjoy it as much as we’ll enjoy having him here. Donegal is absolutely buzzing about it, and Irish rallying is in for a real treat.”
Irish Tarmac Champion and Donegal Rally winner Garry Jennings said:
“I am really thrilled that Michael will be on the start line in Donegal. While we won’t be in the same category I’ll be looking for his stage times just like everybody else. He is untouchable in road racing and a hero to so many of us. Rallying will be new to him so I just hope he enjoys himself. He has nothing to prove about speed and so much to adjust to in a very different sport – I don’t think he carries a passenger on the bike -but boy will it add to the crack in Donegal!”
Clerk of the Course Eamon McGee commented:
“We have been working on this for some time and it is just great that Michael will be part of the 2014 Donegal Rally. His achievements on the Isle of Man were incredible and we expect that many of his fans will make the trip to Donegal to see him.”
“There is a big crossover with rallying and motorcycling in Ireland. A lot of our members go to the major road race meetings and they are all thrilled that he’s coming. He is entered in the most competitive class in the most competitive Rally in the country so he’s not just putting a toe in the water either, but jumping in at the deep end.”
“Rally and Motorcycle road racing fans will know what this entry means in terms of interest. An awful lot of people are going to want to see him compete, and I would appeal to all marshals who were thinking of coming to Donegal as spectators to get in touch with our Chief Marshal on 087 7566863 / +353 87 7566863, or via our website donegalrally.ie, and bring their gear with them. We want Michael to enjoy the stages and the famous Donegal craic in equal measure. Roll on June 20th.”

The Press launch for the Donegal International Rally 2014 Ireland will take place on Tuesday 3rd June 2014 at Terence Diver Hyundai in Letterkenny.
The club will have guests, interviews, and more information about the 2014 Rally and everyone is welcome.

Donegal International Rally Ireland Organisers have revealed a radical upgrade in the media coverage of the Letterkenny-based 2014 Rally, which starts on 20th June.
Press Officer John McCay said:
“After coming close to having a full Internet media service in our previous International rallies, our experience with the feed we supplied on Twitter and Facebook in 2013 - and the huge response it generated - persuaded us to develop our internet presence for 2014.”
“This year’s Donegal International Rally will also have full coverage on iRally, the World’s biggest rally reportingmedia. This will provide iRally Radio, news, stage times, interviews and results on a continual basis over the three days of the Rally on the iRally App and website, with reporters based at stage exits - just as it is on major Championship events around the world.”
“The iRally App has been downloaded to over 700,000 smartphones and tablets world wide, and its involvement is a recognition of the growth of Donegal and a major boost to the Rally’s International status. Like ourselves, they have a Twitter and Facebook presence, but iRally’s is huge. As a result, an awful lot of people are going to see and hear about the renowned ‘”Donegal experience’”.
“It doesn’t stop there. Donegal Motor Club have engaged withMicrocam, the Co. Tyrone- based event media specialists, and long term Donegal Rally partners, to dovetail withiRally and provide a TV service from stage ends and in Service areas, where their large media platform unit will be based each day.”
“The full internet service will be accessed on the www. iRallylive.com website and on www.donegalrally.ie. This will provide competitors, supporters, sponsors and rally organisers with unparalleled Rally coverage.”
Greg Strange of iRally commented:
"iRally is delighted to be coming to Donegal. You look at the cars and drivers who have won the Rally in the past, and you know straightaway this is one of the great rallies, and not just a great rally of Ireland. It's going to be a privilege to be there, and we can't wait"
Charles McGuckin of Microcam added:
“We have been involved with the Donegal Motor Club for many years and are really looking forward to this years Rally. This is a massive step forward. We have the full facilities for instant internet access of rally footage, in-car videos and interviews. We will have a big screen and cameras on site over the weekend and we will also be able to process footage that spectators may capture. This is a really exciting development for Rally coverage in Ireland”.
Eamonn McGee, the Clerk of the Course of the Donegal International Rally said:
“This is a big development for the Rally and will provide competitors and their many sponsors with fantastic media exposure right through the weekend. We have a great relationship with the local and National media and with iRally the event will reach out across the world. Last year we had competitors travel from the US, Canada and Australia to take part and we know that many rally fans, and Irish people abroad, want to follow the progress of their favourites in the Rally, or just soak up the crack that it provides.”
“I’d like to welcome everyone to this new service and also to use its announcement to make a call for marshals to assist in the running of the event. The popularity of the rally keeps growing and so does the number of marshals we require to keep everyone safe. I would appeal to rally fans who can give us some of their time to Marshal on the weekend to contact us as soon as possible on the Rally website.”
