Having recently announced two more outings this year in the World Rally Championship, Waterford’s very own international rally star Craig Breen will compete on the Carrick on Suir Motor Club’s flagship event the Ravens Rock Rally this weekend.
On a summer break from his FIA ERC duties behind the wheel of a Peugeot 208 T16, the Peugeot Rally Academy driver will use the event to acclimatize himself to the unfamiliar Fiesta “World Rally Car” on tarmac ahead of WRC Rallye Deutschland in August.
Craig already a former winner of the rally in 2011 achieved success that time on his way to lifting the WRC Academy (Junior World Championship) title later on that year. Irish Rallying is a World renowned proving ground for cars and drivers alike and this will not only be a great opportunity for Craig to set-up the car but it will also be a rare opportunity for fans to see Craig compete so close to home.
The rally takes place next Saturday and Sunday June 28th - 29th and is based at Dooleys Hotel in Waterford City, with a compact route of ten stages that are all located within easy reach but before the first stage on the outskirts of the City on Saturday evening there will a ceremonial start at 6.30pm in John Roberts Square, where Craig and the car will be just one of the main attractions.

Rallying is a form of Motorsport where highly tuned cars compete to be the fastest over a group of Closed Road Stages. The Monte Carlo and the Circuit of Ireland are the two oldest Rallies in the world. Rallying is considered the most challenging and exciting form of Motorsport for competitors. To put it into context; Rallying is what Formula 1 drivers do for excitement! Rally Cars are based on road cars, but differ in almost every respect. Apart from having high performance engines ,the biggest differences are; the strength of the cars, the enormous brakes and most of all the suspension, which allows rally cars to drive over bumpy roads and jumps at incredible speeds. World Rally Cars are the premier class and they can accelerate as fast as a Formula 1 car. Before and after the loop of Stages, team mechanics are permitted to work on the cars. In the Service Park, you will see Mechanics work against the clock; changing tyres, refuelling cars, adjusting suspension setups and changing Gearboxes, all within 30 minutes.
What does the Rally mean for Waterford? – The Rally brings over €1.5m to the local economy. It brings hundreds of Competitors and team personnel and thousands of spectators to stay in the City and County for the weekend. It gives residents of the City and County free access to a major sporting event. It also brings extensive Global Television coverage with the rally being shown in over 80 Countries worldwide.
