After a seven week break, the Sligo Pallets Border Rally Championship resumes with the Monaghan Stages Rally this weekend. The event is again based in the Hillgrove Hotel in Monaghan town with service area in the new car park behind the courthouse. COC Brendan Flynn has laid out three challenging stages in the Ballybay area which haven't been used for some years. Indeed one stage is being run for the first time. Each stage will be tackled three times with service in Monaghan at the end of each loop.
A full field of 130 crews is expected to cross the start ramp at 9.30am Sunday morning. The top 10 features five world rally cars, a Group N Mitsubishi and four rear-wheel drive Mk2 Escorts. The entry list has quality as well as quantity which is evident throughout the classes and is always one of the most highly anticpated events of the year. 7 of the 8 crews who picked up maximum points in Mayo are on the entry list for Monaghan with Declan Boyle the only absentee as the event falls in between two Tarmac Championship rounds which are his primary focus this year. Many more competitors are expected to sign on for the Championship this weekend adding to the already impressive 150+ competitors who signed on in Mayo!

Daniel McKenna heads for home this weekend when he tackles his local event, the Hillgrove Hotel Monaghan Stages Rally. Following on from a very successful Circuit of Ireland debut in the Pirelli Star Driver Citroen DS3 last weekend, Daniel will revert back to his Mark 2 Escort for Monaghan to resume his Pirelli tyre development programme.
“Heading to my home rally on the back of such an encouraging performance on the Circuit is great and it’s also an opportunity to get more seat time in before the Pirelli Richard Burns Foundation Rally the following weekend. It’s the opening round of the British Championship and that’s very much my focus this season but it’s always good to drive the Escort and especially on home stages.”
Indeed, Daniel is a previous outright winner of this rally having taken the spoils in 2012, but he’ll face very stiff competition this year. 5 World Rally Cars and a 4 wheel drive Group N Mitsubishi are all seeded ahead of Daniel, not to mention the competition he’ll face from top 2 wheel drive exponents like Gary McPhillips, Rodney Wilton, Manus Kelly and Dessie Keenan to name just a few.
“The 2 wheel drive competition will be fierce, it always is in Monaghan. I had a great battle with Gary McPhillips for the win 2 years ago but my real job this weekend is to give feedback to Pirelli on the tyres but to continue on the good form and confidence from the Circuit which will be a major boost to my BRC campaign.
Daniel McKenna and co-driver Arthur Kierans had only planned to use the Discover Northern Ireland Circuit of Ireland as a high-speed test ahead of their British Rally Championship campaign but their Easter weekend in a sun soaked Ulster couldn’t have gone much better. The Circuit of Ireland was Daniel’s first meaningful drive in the Citroen DS3 R3T yet he finished an amazing 6th overall and top 2 wheel drive car. However, due to a busy schedule, Arthur won’t be navigating for Daniel this weekend and Stephen Hagan will instead take up duties in the hotseat.
Monaghan Motor Club have laid on 3 challenging stages in the Ballybay area and the action starts on Sunday morning when the first cars leave the Hillgrove Hotel at 9.30am. You can follow Daniel’s progress by following him on Twitter and Facebook and by checking out www.danielmckenna.net
