The Skibbereen and District Car Club are shocked and saddened by the tragic death of club member, Michael (Mick) O’Riordan earlier today in an accident while at work in West Cork.
Mick was a popular member of the club and was Clerk of the Course of the Fastnet Rally, the premier event in the club. He held the position from the period of 2006 until 2009 during which time the rally was won by Patrick Elliott, who clinched the Dunlop National Rally Championship at the Skibbereen based event in 2006. In 2007, the rally was won by Andreas Mikkelsen and this was a great source of joy and satisfaction for Mick as the Norwegian driver has since gone on to compete in the World Rally Championship with the VW Polo WRC team.
Mick also organised many other events within the club, held the post of club secretary and also represented the club in various committees at regional and national level. He also assisted at rallies throughout the country and had a special affection for events in Killarney and Carrick on Suir.
Mick liked to help everyone, sadly, as part of the crews involved in restoring services after the recent storms, he lost his life.
Tomorrow’s Loose Surface Autocross at Clonakilty has been cancelled as a mark of respect
The Skibbereen and District Car Club wish to convey their deepest sympathies to his family - his wife, Mary and their three children at this very sad and difficult time.
