FOUR DRIVERS – ONE TITLE!….

Posted: October 14, 2013 11:12 AM

As the 2013 REIS – Get Connected MSA Asphalt Rally Championship draws to a close, all eyes are on the Otterburn Military Ranges, in Northumberland, where the final pecking order will be sorted out on the UTS Cheviot Keith Knox Stages Rally. Such has been the competitiveness of this year’s series that, after eight challenging events, there are still four drivers in with a shout of the title.

2012 Cheviot Keith Knox Stages Rally winner John Indri takes the No.1 spot in this year’s 60+ entry, but the yellow Darrian T90 GTR that has seen him staying in touch with the four-wheel drive turbo-charged opposition has been replaced with just such a machine – a Subaru Impreza S11. It is a brave step at this stage of the season, but all the other title aspirants are in World Rally Cars… The Chelmsford driver has enlisted the services of Josh Davison for this event and will be hoping that his ‘local’ knowledge will pay dividends.

Starting behind Indri, Damian Cole (Ford Focus WRC) arrives in Northumberland as Championship leader and has his sights set on a record-breaking fourth consecutive title. Meanwhile Steve Simpson/Patrick Walsh (Subaru Impreza WRC) and Paul Bird (Ford Focus WRC) also have designs on the Championship. Simpson was the 2007 Asphalt Champion and both he and Walsh have previously won events on Otterburn, while Bird’s tally so far this year includes outright wins on both the Manx National and ALMC Stages Rallies, plus a 2nd overall on the recent Patriot Stages at Caerwent, despite it being his first visit to the venue.

So, as can be seen, there will be a titanic struggle for supremacy as the event unfolds – the title chase isn’t quite as a simple as ‘first one home gets it’, but a win would certainly help their cause!

Trying desperately to stay out of the way of the battle raging ahead of them, Simon Mauger/Brian Cammack are back in their Ford Escort MkII. With Indri ‘defecting’ to the 4WD ranks, they will have their sights set on top Millington Rear-Wheel Drive Challenge points, in which Cammack is already confirmed as winning co-driver.

2010 Cheviot winner John Stone is back in his Skoda Fabia WRC – early season promise faltered after a couple of retirements, but strong showings on the last two outings have not only boosted the team’s confidence, but also done wonders to John’s overall position in the table.

Following their potentially serious accident in Ireland in July, it’s good to see Mark Jasper/Don Whyatt back. The Metro 6R4 has now been consigned to history and they are out in an Escort MkII, doubtless chasing Mauger for 2WD honours! Chris Anderson/Chris Thirling start just outside the Top Ten in their Ford Fiesta and these two have ‘form’ on Otterburn – having finished 2nd overall on the 2012 Tyneside Stages, they followed it up with an outright win on the Lindisfarne Rally of that year.

Having missed several rounds this year, Jim Sharp/Craig Wallace haven’t actually seen the finish of a Championship event since the Tour of Epynt in March. Retirements on both the Manx & Jim Clark Rallies leave them with a desire to end the season on a high…

Alex Laffey and Jack Morton have long since tied up Class A7 in their Ford Fiesta S2000 – in fact, whatever happens on the Cheviot, the pair will finish the season with a ‘full-house’ – five maximum points scores.

Outgoing RWD Champions Richard Felgate/Mark Mason (BMW M3), Chris Daykin/Dan Megannity (Subaru Impreza), Billy Cowe/TBA (Impreza) and Kev Monaghan/Chris Purvis (Vauxhall Corsa S1600) have all secured places in the Top 20 and will be out to improve on their seeding by the finish.

The AB Motorsport Peugeot 205 Challenge will be fought over by Tim Daltry, Craig Jose/Nigel Hewett and Andrew & Reg Irving, while Group N is in an interesting situation. Prior to the start of the Cheviot, Julian Barnett leads Chris Rice in Class N4 but, with the 1.25 coefficient being added to all points scored on the event, should Rice win and Barnett not score, the two will tie, with the former getting the nod by dint of his number of maximums….

From an entry of 60, twenty-two crews on the UTS Cheviot Keith Knox Stages are registered for the MSA Asphalt Rally Championship. In addition to those already mentioned above, Paul & Julian Doroszczuk (Ford Escort MkII) and the Vauxhall Novas of Ian Barnard/Andy Bull and Simon Stewart will be joining in the fun for the last time this season.

The first car leaves the start of the UTS Cheviot Keith Knox Stages Rally on the Ranges at 8.30am on Sunday 20th October and, thirteen stages and 92 competitive miles later, arrives back at the finish at the Otterburn Hall Hotel (Rally HQ) at 4.30pm that afternoon.
