THE Dunlop National Rally Championship concluded in Bantry, west Cork where locals, Denis Cronin and his co-driver, Coleman Hurley (Subaru WRC) took a 29.8 second victory over the Ford Fiesta WRC of Daragh O’Riordan/Tony McDaid. Third placed, Clonmel’s, Roy White (MG S2000) and his Cork co-driver, James O’Brien, secured maximum Dunlop points to clinch third overall in the series.
Meanwhile, in the rally.ie category of the Dunlop series – awarded for the top two wheel drive crew in overall standings – victory went to Donegal pair, Declan Gallagher and Ryan Moore (Toyota Starlet), they finished fourth overall. Their only rivals for the title, Cavan’s, Jonathan Pringle/Martin Byrne crashed their Ford Escort out of the rally on the seventh stage.
On the opening stage, Hugh Hunter (Subaru WRC), winner of the last Dunlop round, the Galway Summer Rally, set the pace – his Subaru set the road - that skirted Bantry Bay - alight long Bantry Bay. At the finish near Durrus, he led the rear wheel drive Toyota Starlet of Declan Gallagher by 18.6 seconds with back to back Fastnet champion, Daragh O’Riordan (Ford Fiesta WRC) occupying third. On a pre-event test, O’Riordan’s Fiesta broke a rear driveshaft.
Roy White slotted his MGS2000 into fourth spot followed by late entry, Denis Cronin (Subaru WRC). The Ford Escorts of Jonathan Pringle and Wesley Patterson were next in classification. The top ten was completed by Jer O'Donovan (Subaru), Jason McSweeney (Mitsubishi Evo VIII) and John Hickey (Ford Escort).
Hunter was also quickest on the second stage as Cronin moved into second – 27.3 seconds behind and 4.4 seconds in front of O’Riordan. Hunter’s rally ended on S.S. 3, Mount Gabriel when his Subaru WRC developed transmission problems.
Cronin set the pace on the stage and arrived at the Bantry town service park with a lead of 24.1 seconds over O’Riordan with Gallagher 12.1 seconds further behind in third. Cronin remarked that he was still braking far too early at the various junctions but was happy with his performance. That was in sharp contrast to O’Riordan, who admitted he was very unsettled on the opening loop. Third placed Gallagher was untroubled. Fourth placed Roy White (MG S2000) was stymied by a dirty windscreen as Jonathan Pringle (Escort) seemed to have no answer to the pace of his rally.ie rival, Declan Gallagher.
Wesley Patterson (Escort) was sixth in a top ten that was completed by Jason McSweeney (Mitsubishi), John Hendy (BMW M3 Compact), Jer O'Donovan (Subaru) and the Ford Focus of Dan O'Brien.
On the repeat loop of three stages, Cronin topped the time sheets on the Goat’s Path and Mount Gabriel tests while O’Riordan set the best time over Mount Gabriel. Cronin ran out of sequence on the Mount Gabriel as he attended to an intercom problem. At the final service halt in Bantry, the Ballylickey ace led O’Riordan by 27.2 seconds, the latter made changes to the suspension set-up that seemed to improve the handling capabilities of his Fiesta WRC. A charging Roy White moved into third with rally.ie duo, Gallagher and Pringle next in classification.
Wesley Patterson (Escort) admitted that he was not willing to mix it with Gallagher and Pringle. Seventh placed Jason McSweeney on his first outing in a Mitsubishi was delighted with his performance. The remaining places in the top ten were annexed by Jer O'Donovan (Subaru), Vincent O'Shea (Ford Escort) and Vincent McSweeney (Honda Civic), who led Class 11F.
O’Riordan took 2.9 seconds out of Cronin on S.S. 7 and 6.3 seconds on the penultimate stage to cut the deficit to 18 seconds. However, Cronin sealed victory with the fastest time on the final stage to take his third win on this event.
O’Riordan, who celebrated his 32nd. birthday, had to be content with second with White taking third overall in the rally and also in the Dunlop National Rally Championship.
Gallagher had a super run to claim the rally.ie award, unfortunately, his title rival, Jonathan Pringle (Escort) crashed on the first stage of the final loop.
Elsewhere, Wesley Patterson (Escort) was fifth and Dunmanway’s, Jason McSweeney (Mitsubishi VIII) was sixth. The remaining places in the top ten went to Eddie Power (Toyota Corolla), Group N winner, Jer O'Donovan (Subaru); Vincent McSweeney (Honda Civic) and Andrew Mahon (Ford Escort) were the respective winners of Class 11F and Class 11R - front and rear wheel drive.
The Dunlop “Drive of the Day” award went to Steve Wood/Keith Moriarty (Citroen C2R2 Max).
Non-starters included Kevin Barrett (Subaru WRC), James Stafford (Darrian T90 GTR), Pat Donegan (Ford Escort) and Eoin Doyle (Ford Focus WRC)

Double winner of the Fastnet Rally, Ballylickey’s, Denis Cronin, is a late entry for Sunday’s Westlodge Hotel Fastnet Rally that marks the conclusion of the Dunlop National Rally Championship.
The Ballylickey driver, who won the rally in 1994 in an Opel Ascona 400 and in 2009 in a Subaru WRC, will drive his S11 Subaru WRC on the nine stage event in Bantry.

THE Dunlop National Rally Championship concludes on Sunday next with the Westlodge Hotel Fastnet Rally in Bantry in West Cork The nine stage encounter that meanders through some of the most spectacular scenery along Bantry Bay, Dunmanus Bay and Mount Gabriel will determine the outstanding issues within the popular eight round series.
Top seed and back to back Fastnet champion, Daragh O’Riordan (Fiesta WRC) will renew rivalry with Welsh ace, Hugh Hunter (Subaru WRC), who won the last Dunlop round, the Galway Summer Rally. On that occasion, he finished a minute and 22.5 seconds behind Hunter, who is likely to contest the 2014 Dunlop series.
However, O’Riordan, who will start as favourite. He is seeking to become the third driver to win a hat trick of wins on the Fastnet (Carrigaline’s, Frank O’Mahony won the inaugural event in 1982 and also won in 1996 and 1997 while Dunmanway’s, Liam McCarthy won in 1988, 1992 and 2008) and the first to win three in a row.
This will be his fourth Dunlop round this season, he finished third overall in Monaghan where he felt unwell throughout the rally. In the Tipperary Stonethrowers Rally, he led from the start until he crashed out on the fourth stage.
Clonmel’s, Roy White in his MG S2000 is having one of his most successful seasons to date and can finish third overall in the series. He needs just five points to deny present incumbent, Josh Moffett, who is not on the entry list.
“If we (Roy and co-driver, James O’Brien) finish third, it will be a lot more than what our plans were at the start of the year, it will be an awesome result for us.” Throughout the season, White has notched up several top five finishes but he has no doubt about selecting the highlight so far, “If I want to be totally partisan, it has to be the Stonethrowers Rally, that was my best ever in a national round.” He added, “The car is more reliable this year and given that, we have more seat time and we are able to be more competitive. There is great comraderie in the series, , it’s been brilliant, along with the Irish drivers, James Belton came across from Wales and he added a lot to the championship, we all met up after recce, in parc ferme and service, it’s a real good feeling and a great championship and I’m definitely doing it next year.” White is aware of what is needed in terms of points, added, “I think the situation we are in is more nerve wrecking than anything else.”
Although Kevin Barrett (S14 Subaru WRC) is seeded at number four, he will not be participating. This season he had only brief outings in the Dunlop series but plans to return for a full attack in 2014.
Early season Dunlop front runner, Wexford’s, James Stafford in his rear wheel drive Darrian T90 GTR will be hoping that the weather along the Atlantic coastline is dry so he can give mount a challenge to the WRC brigade. Non-finishes in the rounds in Monaghan, Sligo and Galway have ruled him out of contention for the top rally.ie award (the highest wheel drive competitors in overall standings). He is currently third in the standings behind Donegal’s, Declan Gallagher (Toyota Starlet) and Cavan’s, Jonathan Pringle (Ford Escort), who occupy the respective number six and seven berths I Bantry, Stafford could still take the runner-up spot.
On the last round, the Galway Summer in Ballinasloe, Gallagher secured 18 Dunlop points – two more than Pringle, who is nine points adrift heading to Bantry, the Cavan driver has already won the Escort Mk. 2 Dunlop Champions Trophy. All three can add all their points tally from Bantry due to the fact that they have all failed to finish at least two of the events thus far.
Meanwhile, the top ten is completed by Lisburn’s, Wesley Patterson (Ford Escort), Meath’s, Pat Donegan (Ford Escort) and Kilkenny’s, Eoin Doyle in the Ford Focus WRC that won the Fastnet Rally and indeed, the Dunlop National Rally Championship, in 2005 in the hands of Ray Breen.
Elsewhere, Meath’s, John Hendy will compete in a BMW M3 Compact, last year, driving a Toyota Corolla, he was seventh overall after the opening stage, but dropped down the order with problems and retired on the second loop of stages.
Londoner, Dan O'Brien, the son of newly crowned Irish Forest Rally champion, Michael, will occupy the number twelve slot in a Ford Focus WRC and will be followed by Waterford’s, Eddie Power (Toyota Corolla WRC), Killarney’s, Kevin O'Donoghue (Ford Escort) and Clare’s, Anthony O'Halloran (Opel Manta 400)
The top Group N entry is that of local driver, Jer O'Donovan (Subaru). Opposition will be provided by Waterford’s, Brian O'Keeffe, also in a Subaru and last year’s Dunlop Class 3 winner, Baltimore’s, Stephen Carey (Honda Civic).
Kenmare’s, Vincent O'Shea (Ford Escort) fourteenth overall in last year’s rally will be hoping for an improved performance this time around.
Aside from O’Donovan, some of the local entries are Dunmanway’s, Jason McSweeney (Mitsubishi EvoVIII), Bandon’s, Vincent McSweeney (Honda Civic) and Murragh’s, Andrew Mahon (Ford Escort).
The now traditional ceremonial start in Bantry Square takes place at 7.30pm on Saturday evening next.

By virtue of winning the Orchard Motorsport Cork 20 International Rally on the first weekend of October, the subsequent maximum points gained have made Daragh O’Riordan the PlasticBags.ie Southern 4 Rally Champion for 2013. Having achieved four maximum scores the Midleton driver cannot now be caught even with the last round, the Westlodge Hotel Fastnet Rally still to come on the October Bank Holiday weekend. This is O’Riordans third year in a row winning the championship, the first driver to achieve this since the competition began in 1998. The battle for the runner up spot is still wide open though, with a number of drivers still in a position to take this place. Stephen Carey currently hold second spot by just one point from Wesley Patterson with Roy White and Kevin O’Donoghue making up the top five place and any one of these drivers can claim the runner up spot in the championship with a good score in Bantry.
In the classes, class 2 has been won by Shane Kenneally in his Honda Civic as Christopher O’Donovan in second place can no longer catch him. Stephen Carey as always completely dominated class three, while class six sees a close battle between Patrick Calnan and Jason O’Brien with just two points separating the pair. Colm Noonan is in a strong position to claim class seven, while Daragh O’Riordan has won class eight yet again. Shane Stanley and Noel O’Sullivan are battling it out for class 9 honours in their Civic and Escort respectively while class 10 has been won by Victor Beamish with a maximum score. Class 11 is currently being led by David Duggan, but Jonathan O’Callaghan could still pip him to the honours with a good score in Bantry.
Steve Roberts has already won Class 12 in his Escort and Wesley Patterson has done likewise with Class 13 both with maximum scores. Kerrymen Charlie Hickey and Kevin O’Donoghue are both still in the hunt for Class 14, while in class 15 Mark Nangle has enough in hand to pip John Hickey, but an appearance and a good result for Roy White in Bantry could land him the class honours. Todd Falvey currently leads the Historic section in his Porsche which still has both the Fastnet Rally and the Historic Lakes as the final two rounds. The junior class has been won by John Flaherty in his Starlet after taking maximum points in the Cork 20.

Heritage & Culture
Bantry town is alive with Heritage & Culture.
Over 200 years ago, in the Winter of 1796, a formidable French Armada, inspired by Theobald Wolfe Tone and the United Irishmen, sailed from Brest in France. Their purpose was to invade Ireland, put an end to British rule and establish an independent Irish republic. Almost 50 warships carried 15,000 soldiers to the Southwest of County Cork.
Stormy chaos reigned and with ship-to ship communication largely disrupted, the invasion foundered the fleet eventually turning about for home. Ten ships were lost..... One of these, the frigate Surveillante, was too storm-damaged to make the return journey to France. She was scuttled off Whiddy Island and has lain undisturbed for almost 200 years. Rediscovered in 1982, the Surveillante was declared an Irish National Monument in 1985 and the work began on its recovery, conservation and exhibition.
Wolfe Tone Square with its Monument of Wolfe Tone is named after Theobald Wolfe Tone.
During June July & August we offer visitors the opportunity of doing our heritage walks around the town which is free of charge to our visitors.
