BOYLES INCREASE LEAD IN DUNLOP SERIES - Report Courtsy of Dunlop Sponsors of the National Rally Championship

Posted: February 8, 2014 7:49 PM

Donegal’s, Declan Boyle/Declan Boyle (Subaru WRC) won the Waterford based Raven’s Rock Rally, round four of the Dunlop National Rally Championship that was curtailed due to a fatal accident on the fourth stage.

The following statement was issued by Motorsport Ireland,

“Motorsport Ireland deeply regrets that competitor Paul Mulcahy of Dungarvan, Co. Waterford, has passed away following injuries received in a tragic accident, which occurred during stage 4 of the Carrick-on-Suir Stages Rally which took place today Sunday 30th June 2013. As a mark of respect the organisers, Carrick-on-Suir Motor Club, have cancelled the remainder of the event.

Motorsport Ireland and Carrick-on-Suir Motor Club extends its heartfelt sympathy to Paul’s family and friends. Our thoughts and prayers are with them at this very sad time.”
Boyle finished 20.5 seconds ahead of Welsh driver, James Belton (Subaru WRC) with last year’s event winner, James Stafford (Darrian T90) eleven seconds further behind in third.

Triple national champion, Niall Maguire had a short-lived event when a nut from one of the drive’s fell off his Subaru WRC on the way to the opening stage. On the first stage James Belton (Subaru WRC) set the pace – two seconds ahead of last year’s rally winner, James Stafford (Darrian) with Dunlop series leader, Declan Boyle third. The Donegal driver was hampered by intercom issues and was three seconds further behind and three seconds ahead of fourth placed, Roy White (MG S2000).

Boyle was quickest on the two remaining stages of the opening loop and moved into the lead by the service halt at the South Quays. The Donegal ace reckoned the second stage was very gravelly while he had a good run on the third stage. Belton, 1.8 seconds behind in second, had a moment at a chicane on S.S. 2.

Stafford remarked that the tyre compound he had selected was far too soft as Roy White (MG S2000) in fourth had an altercation with a chicane bale on the third stage. Kilkenny’s, Eoin Doyle in the ex-Ray Breen Ford Focus reckoned he was a little too cautious on the third stage.

Josh Moffett (Mitsubishi) led Group N and held sixth overall, he was untroubled through the opening loop as he built up a lead of 21.5 seconds over Eugene Meegan (Mitsubishi). The top ten was completed by Jonathan Pringle, Meegan, Declan Gallagher and Sam Moffett.

Pringle was slowed on the second stage as he encountered the hanging dust from Eddie Power’s Toyota Corolla WRC. Gallagher (Toyota Starlet) had an overshoot on the second stage; on the first stage, he had intercom woes. Sam Moffett remarked that he was taking time to re-adjust to his usual Mitsubishi.

On the second loop, Boyle was quickest on stages four and five and arrived at the final service halt with a lead of 20.5 seconds. The Donegal driver stalled his Subaru on the start line of S.S. 6 and later, clipped a rock, luckily, his Subaru didn’t puncture. Belton lost a few seconds when he spun on S.S. 6 where Stafford actually posted the best time.

White took fourth to moved up to third overall in the Dunlop series as Josh Moffett took a firm grip on the Motorsport Safety Group N award. Sam Moffett (Mitsubishi) finished sixth ahead of Eoin Doyle, who incurred a one minute and 15 second time penalty for departing late from the service control. The final places in the top ten went to Declan Gallagher (Toyota Starlet), Eddie Power (Toyota Corolla WRC) and Alan Doherty (Opel Corsa). Due to the fatality, the remainder of the event was cancelled.
