What is Rallying? – Rallying is a form of Motorsport where highly tuned cars compete to be the fastest over a
group of Closed Road Stages. The Monte Carlo and the Circuit of Ireland are the two oldest Rallies in the world.
Rallying is considered the most challenging and exciting form of Motorsport for competitors. To put it into context;
Rallying is what Formula 1 drivers do for excitement!
What are Rally Cars? - Rally Cars are based on road cars, but differ in almost every respect. Apart from having high
performance engines ,the biggest differences are; the strength of the cars, the enormous brakes and most of all
the suspension, which allows rally cars to drive over bumpy roads and jumps at incredible speeds. World Rally Cars
are the premier class and they can accelerate as fast as a Formula 1 car and cost up to €500,000.
What is the Service Park? – Before and after the loop of Stages, team mechanics are permitted to work on the
cars. In the Service Park, you will see Mechanics work against the clock; changing tyres, refueling cars, adjusting
suspension setups and changing Gearboxes, all within 30 minutes.
What does the Rally mean for Waterford? – The Rally brings over €1.5m to the local economy. It brings hundreds
of Competitors and team personnel to stay in the City and County for the weekend. It gives residents of the City
and County free access to a major sporting event. Is brings extensive Global Television coverage with the rally
being shown in over 80 Countries worldwide.
The Rally is fortunate to have to loyal support of several long term sponsors who are supporting the Rallies move
to Waterford; Suirway Farm Machinery, Tom Geraghty Tyres, Eddie Power JCB Hire. They have been joined by
new sponsors; Dooley’s Hotel, Walsh’s Nissan Car Sales, The House of Waterford Crystal, The Port of Waterford,
The Clock Tower Car Park Co. and Lily O’Brien’s Chocolate Café. The Rally has also received the support and
assistance of Waterford County Council and Waterford Chamber of Commerce, and media partners Beat FM, as
well as many other new sponsors and partners to be announced in the coming weeks.
Clerk of the Course, Billy Collins said;
“We are delighted with the welcome the Rally has received and the support
that has been given by the local authorities and key stake holders. In particular I have to say, Dooley’s Hotel have
made us feel very welcome and the people in Waterford City Council have given great help and advice.”
“We have put a lot of work into making the Service Park an entertaining day out for Families with the Food Village,
Fun Fair Rides, Children’s Entertainment, Rally Car Simulator and Classic Car Show, and in particular we hope that
Marathon Competitors and their Families and friends, as well as people on their way to the Day Tripper Music
Festival, will come and hang out in the Food Village on Sunday afternoon.
