Round 6 - 2013 Tarmac Rally Championship
Round 5 - 2013 Southern 4 Rally Championship

Second place overall on the Orchard Motorsport Cork ‘20’ International Rally was enough to give Garry Jennings from Kesh Co. Fermanagh his first Tarmac Championship title. With the experienced Rory Kennedy on the pacenotes for the weekend Jennings held his nerve despite some concerns about his Impreza WRCs engine on the first day. Although the Millstreet based event was won by Daragh O’Riordan in a Ford Fiesta WRC for the third year in a row, something that hadn’t been done since the great Billy Coleman in 1972, the runner up spot was enough to secure the title for Jennings. Declan Boyle had led the event initially, but in keeping with his bad luck throughout the year, went off the road on the fifth stage handing the lead to O’Riordan. Donagh Kelly from Donegal finished in third place in Cork and as a result took the runner up spot in the championship. Kellys best chance of overall success depended on Jennings not finishing the rally which would give him the title. However having finished runner up in 2012, Jennings was not to be denied this time and took the title deservedly after taking overall victory in both the Rally of the Lakes and the Ulster Rally. Sam Moffett who had won the Donegal International Rally in June took third place in the championship after reverting back to his Group N Mitsubishi Lancer for Cork.
The overall Group N battle went to the wire with Stephen Wright and Josh Moffett tussling for supremacy in their respective Mitsubishi Lancers, and a troubled start proved to be costly for Moffett as found it difficult to reel in his rival. In the end less than a minute separated the two drivers with Wright claiming the Group N title for 2013. The Modified Challenge also saw some final round drama as both of the joint leaders Frank Kelly and Fergus O’Meara both retired which handed the title to the consistent Killarney driver Noel O’Sullivan in his 1300 Escort. The Historic Tarmac Championship had been decided when Wesley Patterson ran in the modified category leaving James O’Mahony from Limerick as the winner for 2013 in his Volvo. As another successful and exciting Irish Tarmac Championship comes to a conclusion, congratulations must go to Garry Jennings who becomes the first Fermanagh driver to take overall honours since 1996 when the late great Bertie Fisher took his fourth and final title.

On behalf of the Chairman and Directors of the T.R.O.A we would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the 2013 Irish Tarmac Rally Champions Garry Jennings and Kevin Flanagan. These two men battled all year in different cars but are most deserving winners. Garry has proved year on year what a talented driver he is but never took the top prize until now. His flamboyance on the stages, his courtesy to organisers and fans alike is something of note, Indeed a championship is a team effort and there is no mistaking the efforts that the team have put in this past season to get him to the finish and his just reward.
Kevin Flanagan who partnered Donagh Kelly this year has proved that a championship is not won on one or two rounds and this pairing have been at the forefront of the Irish Tarmac Championship all year. Kevin a man who loves his motorsport has really come to fore as one of Irelands top Co-Drivers and in winning the Championship gets the reward he deserves.
In the Modified Championship there were surprise winners in the Killarney pairing of Noel O’Sullivan and Nicky Burke who against all the odd’s came out on top. This crew have travelled all over the country and come out as champions something I am sure they will cherish. It just goes to show the Irish Modified Challenge is not over until the final control of the last round.
On the Historic scene the winners of this Year’s Irish Historic Rally Championship are James O ’Mahony and Kerrie Barry in their unusual Volvo. This crew have showed great determination and spirit to take the Victors laurels.
I would just like to take this opportunity to thank all registered competitors for the courtesy shown, and the willingness to help bring the Irish Tarmac Rally Championship forward, You are the real heroes of Irish rallying. A special word goes to all organising clubs and C.O.C’s for putting on what can only be described as the best rallies in the country if not further afield. We look forward to seeing you all again next year and some more crews signing up. We start the 2014 Championship in December for the Killarney Historic Rally with the Main and Modified Championship getting underway in Galway.

Tipperary’s Andrew Slattery and his co-driver Shaun Forde, thrilled thousands at this weekend’s Cork 20 International Rally, Millstreet, as their Peugeot 208 R2 came 2nd in class and 13th overall in the event, having set 6 fastest stage times. The racing duo faced extremely tricky conditions during the two-day race as rain and mud left surfaces very slippery and several cars left the road.
A very satisfied Andrew said, “It’s a great feeling to be finished and to have the car going home in one piece. It was no doubt the toughest event I have ever competed in. Conditions were very changeable, very wet and tricky. We had a massive scare on stage 1 which could have ended the weekend for us: 5th gear down a mountain lane and the rear of the car lost grip! It was also somewhat of a gamble choosing a completely new set up with different suspension settings and a softer spring front and rear, but it definitely paid off and the car felt great even on bumpy surfaces.”
He continued, “The surface changed a lot from medium grip to no grip at all in places, which didn’t give me the confidence to push as hard as I could at times. We ended up 2nd R2 overnight with a 53 second gap. But we’re very happy overall with the weekend’s result. The car ran without a single fault all weekend over 16 stages and over 200 competitive kilometres.”
Andrew, Service Manager at Slattery's Garage Puckane, Main Peugeot Dealers in Tipperary North, has competed in 4 rounds of the National Tarmac Championship R2 class this year, time he has spent getting to know the car. He recently picked up 3rd place in class in Galway Summer Stages Rally on 1st September. His Peugeot 208 R2 is sponsored by Total, through Irish Distributor, Finol Oils, whilst Gowan Distributors Limited, Peugeot Importers in Ireland has committed to promotional support to run the car in 2013. Andrew’s next event will be Fastnet West Cork Rally, October 30th.
The famous Cork 20 International Rally attracts thousands of spectators and has been won previously by many heroes including World Champion Sebastian Loeb and Irish Rallying star Billy Coleman.

Excitement is building for this year’s Orchard Motorsport Cork "20" International rally 2013, which is taking place this weekend the 4th – 6th of October in Millstreet, Co. Cork. The event is being run out of a centralised location in the Green Glens Arena where you will find the Rally Office, Trailer Park, Scrutiny area, Pairc Feirme and Service Park.
There has been a strong number of entries coming in over the last number of weeks which will make for a very competitive event and what also adds to the excitement surrounding this year’s Cork “20” is that the Irish Tarmac Championship has a number of drivers still in contention for the overall title and it will all be decided on the stages around Millstreet.
There are currently no less than 4 drivers battling it out for the title of Irish Tarmac Rally Champion. Garry Jennings still looks to be the favourite to win on 63 points, but both he and Donagh Kelly, who is currently in second place on 49 points, have received points in all the rounds throughout the year and so still need to drop a round. Derek McGarrity is also in contention for the title in 3rd place on 44 points and in 4th place is Sam Moffett with 37.5 points, as Sam has used his drop round earlier in the year he can benefit from a good result and should definitely not be ruled out as a possibility. Regardless of who wins you can be sure that these 4 will put all their efforts into trying to secure the title.
This year’s event includes a number of categories, the International and National rally which takes place over all the events stages, the Historic section of the rally which will take place over a total of 13 stages - 7 stages Saturday (Full day) and 6 stages Sunday and the Junior section of the rally which will take place over all of Sundays 9 stages.
The format of the rally will take place over 2 days with a new revised compact route layout so as to minimise road mileage. The Saturday leg of the event, consisting of 7 stages, will see a loop of 3 classic stages repeated twice followed by a single run over a stage close to the town as the last stage Saturday evening. The Sunday leg of the event, consisting of 9 stages, will see a loop of 4 stages repeated twice followed by a single run over the same Saturday closing stage close to the town as the last stage Sunday evening.
The timetable for the event will see it all kick off with a ceremonial start on Friday evening at 8pm in the square in Millstreet. Then on Saturday morning the first car will be away from the start ramp at 10am and back to final service at 4pm. The Sunday re-start will commence at 9am with a finish time back at the Finish ramp at approximately 4pm. There is also plenty of fun for the family to be had throughout Saturday and Sunday as there will be a Family Fun day run out of the Green Glens Arena by the Munster Car Club. There are a variety of fun filled activities some of which include; tractor building, auto tests, grand prix and many more.
Please see the clubs websites for more information on Time and Distance Schedules, Programme sales
locations, Regs/entry forms for late entries and any other information that you need.

The Irish Tarmac Championship is heading towards an exciting conclusion with the Orchard Motorsport Cork 20 International Rally
on the 5th& 6th of October and it’s still all to play for with a number of drivers still in contention for overall honours. The Millstreet
based event carries both bonus pointsfor each leg and points and a halffor overall positions. With a competitor’s best four scores
to count, dropped scores will come into play after the fifth and final round. At present Garry Jennings still looks to be the favourite
to take overall honours as he leads on 63 points. The Kesh driver has been consistently quick this year and with wins on Killarney
and Ulster there can be no doubting his credentials as he aims to improve on last year’s runner up position. However Garry has
scored on all rounds to date so will have to drop a score if he finishes in Cork.
Donagh Kelly is in second place on 49 points is in a similar position having some very solid results during the season in both a
Subaru Impreza WRC and currently a Ford Focus WRC. The Donegal driver will also have to drop a score if he finishes in Cork but
with the extra points on offer, a very good result could propel him into the lead. Derek McGarrity in third place is the only former
Tarmac Champion in the hunt having taken the title in 2003 & 2004 (shared with Eugene Donnelly in ’04). He is currently on 44
points which would be a much higher total but for his last stage retirement on the Donegal International while lying in second
place. Sam Moffett in fourth place started out the season in Group N, but a switch to a WRC car for Donegal and the subsequent
win moved him into contention. A disappointment was in store in the Ulster Rally as he retired, but he can still add to his points
total of 37.5 in Cork and isn’t out of contention for the title yet.
Stephen Wright in fifth place has had an excellent year and is also leader of the Group N category from Josh Moffett. Wright has
taken one maximum score and three second placed scores so far which gives him a comfortable but not insurmountable lead in
the Group N category. The Irish Tarmac Modified Challenge is also going to be decided in Cork with Fergus O’Meara and Frank
Kelly tied on 30 points. O’Meara took two early maximum scores but Donegal and Ulster were kind to Kelly and he finds himself
right back in contention for Cork with the winner taking the spoils. Should either of these two slip up, Noel O’Sullivan on 22 points
can take advantage and the Killarney man could put a lot of the more powerful machinery to shame. The Irish Tarmac Historic
Championship still has two rounds to go, with the action intensifying on the forthcoming Manx Rally. The Historic section of this
event known as Rallee Classicagh sees the championship leader Wesley Patterson skip the trip to the Isle of Man leaving the
second placed driver James O’Mahony, who is just five points behind, the opportunity to take the lead ahead of the final round in
Cork.Other championship registered drivers to travel to the Manx include Brendan McAree and Mervyn Johnston.
