The 2012/13 Irish Rallycross Championship marks its 30th Season since the Championship launched in 1982, not much has changed since then with exceptions of some minor rule changes, the circuit and naturally the drivers. The run up to this season see’s a number of positive changes to championship, the biggest since its inception in 1982; The aim of which is to provide Drivers and Spectators the best value for their money. The 2012/13 season sees the introduction of the JB Buggies, an ultra quick tubular framed 600cc powerhouse. These Buggies have made their way onto irish shores from Portugal, initially appearing in Autocross events across Ireland, this season sees them crossing over into Rallycross. Joe Cullen Racing are among the many competitors due to take part in this years championship with the buggies, which provided an entertaining show this year at the Bavaria City Racing event in Dublin.
The championship merges rounds from the end of this year into the next years championship, this marks a move for the championship back to a single year championship, as a result there are 9 rounds, of which 6 count towards drivers final championship points. One of the biggest changes to the championship will see the Superfinal removed for the season, instead for this years championship there will be only class champions, this will mean drivers score their points in the A Final of each class final; As a direct result of this change drivers up to 16th will be eligible for points based on their finishing position in the finals. The format for Finals has also changed, previously the fastest car from the D final would be promoted to the back row of the C Final, for 2012/13 this has been changed and the fastest 2 cars from each final will make it onto the back row of the next final. 8 Cars in total Qualify for the D Final and 6 for the C, B and A Finals.
Driver conduct will be under strict scrutiny this year, drivers who gain points on their license can expect double that amount to be subtracted from their championship points, for example if a driver is endorsed with 2 points a total of 4 points will be deducted from his/her championship points.
