Round 8 - 2012 MSA Asphalt Rally Championship
Posted: September 25, 2012 11:43 AM
Already crowned as the REIS – Get Connected MSA Asphalt Rally Champion, 2011 Patriot Stages winner Damian Cole starts this year’s event in the hope of a repeat performance in order to give James Morgan a fighting chance of back-to-back co- driver titles. Morgan has been absent from a couple of the earlier rounds of the Championship and now needs a top score on the Caerwent Training Area to overhaul current leader Patrick Walsh who will not be present on this occasion. Anything other than top marks will force a showdown on the final round of the series on the Otterburn Military Ranges in November.
So, while Cole/Morgan are the defending champions, the 2010 Patriot Stages winners Simon Mauger/Brian Cammack are also making an all-too-rare appearance this year. Mauger’s previous giant-killing acts in his Ford Escort MkII are well documented and, once again, his challenge should not be underestimated. Not only will he have an eye on another victory but he will also be chasing Millington Escort Challenge points.
Pete Rayner/Richard Bonner (6th overall last year), Kevin & Charles Tappin and Ian Kenvin/Ian Meakin will be out to derail Mauger’s charge, while Richard Merriman/Kath Curzon will be concentrating on getting their T90 to the finish in order to qualify for the Millington Darrian Challenge awards.
One of the Championship classes that is still to be sorted this season is B13 and, in the absence of current leader Richard Clews, there is bound to be a flurry of activity as time begins to run out. Chris Daykin/Dan Megannity (Subaru Impreza) are just a few points in front of Chris Jones/Ashley Trimble (Ford Focus STI) and, although they have only contested two events so far, Bob Fowden/Jason Sugden (Subaru Impreza) have scored maximum points on both occasions.
Making a rare appearance this year are Mark Jasper/Don Whyatt in the former’s MG Metro 6R4, while the ranks of B13 are swelled still further by Phil Turner’s Impreza and the Mitsubishi Lancer of Steve Hollis/Tim Currie.
Already confirmed as the MSA Asphalt Group N Champions, Rob Tout/Dan Holley are back in their Lancer EVO9 – a good result here could elevate Tout into the Top Three overall to join Holley who is already there! Finishing behind them on the Mewla, Wynne Watkins/Sherryn Roberts (Impreza) will be out to reverse the order this time!
Although the AB Motorsport Peugeot Challenge has already been decided in Tim Daltry’s favour, ahead of Craig Jose, the final look of the co-drivers’ table is still to be determined. Nigel Hewett (Jose) leads Emma Morrison (Daltry), but Kev Harbour/Dave Tortoishell are also heading for Caerwent and could easily upset the form book!
Matt Beebe/Paula Swinscoe lead the BTRDA FWD Challenge in their MG ZR and, whilst their domination may remain unchallenged after the Patriot, a whole host of crews will be out to rain on their parade, viz :
