Donegal's Barry McGill has moved into a clear lead of the 2012 Sligo Pallets Border Rally Championship after securing class victory on round 4 of the series, the Mourne Rally organised by Newry and District Motor Club. Guided by regular navigator Derek Heena, they took a comfortable class win as well as 16th overall. Mac Kierans leads the navigator section despite his absence from this event. Border Championship sponsor, Andrew Mullen & Elaine Doherty took to the stages with their Mitsubishi Lancer Evo9 and mounted a strong challenge for overall honours. An intense battle developed with the Mk2 Escort of Drew Stewart with the lead changing hands regularly during the day. Despite setting fastest or equal fastest times on 10 of the 13 stages, Stewart just had enough in hand to take the win, with Mullen/Doherty having to settle for 2nd place. Indeed if it hadn't been for a costly spin, the result could have been very different. However, the Sligo pair did receive the Sligo Pallets 'Drive of the Day' award for their efforts. Hugh McQuaid/Chris Melly picked up some useful points in their class 12 bid with a 14th overall finish and 3rd in class, but 1st among Border Championship registered crews in this class. The Championship resumes with the Sligo Stages Rally on Saturday 7th of July as the battle for the 2012 Sligo Pallets Border Rally Championship heats up!
The current class leads are:
Class 2 Adrian Cannon/Paddy McCrudden,
Class 3 Pakie Duffy/Matthew McKenna,
Class 4 Andrew Mullen/Elaine Doherty,
Class 6 Joseph McGonigle/Ciaran Geaney,
Class 7 Roger Kennedy/Wendy Blackledge,
Class 8 Niall Maguire/Enda Sherry,
Class 9 Barry McGill/Derek Heena,
Class 10 Patrick Kiernan/Darren O'Brien,
Class 11 Anthony Hand/Emmet Sherry,
Class 12 Arthur Kierans/Mac Kierans,
Class 13 Michael Conlon/Martin Byrne,
Class 14 Camillus Bradley/Crawford Henderson,
Class 15 David Leonard/Darragh Mullen.

The planning for the 2012 Sligo Stages Rally is well underway, as Clerk of the Course for the second year, Paul Kiely and a dedicated committee have been busy in preparation of the July 7th event. In the selection of a three stage loop he was very conscious to keep the competitor interest to the fore, while taking into account spectator access. All of the approximate 145km of stages contain a selection of challenges while being aware of encompassing a compact loop around a central service .While some of the stages include sections of real classic Sligo Stages territory ,a series of deviations can add their own individuality to the selection.
The event, as in 2011 is running on a Saturday, therefore the ceremonial start in the town centre will take place on Friday evening. Last year’s Ceremonial start on the banks of the Garavougue River was electric, as the cars snaked across Rockwood Parade to cross the ramp and this year is expected to be even better. The event proper begins on Saturday morning with the first car leaving parc-ferme at 8.45am.
The provision is for a starting field of 151 crews and this year the C.O.C has reintroduced the classes for both Junior and Historics .
The Club is delighted of the continued support of its two title sponsors again for this year, Sligo Park Hotel who have played host to Sligo Stages since its inception and Quinn Body Repairs and Recovery who are in their fourth year of supporting the Stages.
The event is round five of the, Sligo Pallets Border Rally Championship.
Regulations are available for download from the club website, with entries opening on May 28th . Closing date for entries is June 28th.
