2012 P & R Benn Greystoke Stages Rally
Posted: July 13, 2012 2:59 PM
Supporting the Motorsport Industry Association (MIA) ' of which M-Sport Managing Director, Malcolm Wilson, is a board member ' and National Motorsport Week, M-Sport auctioned a once in a life time co-driving experience last week to raise over five hundred pounds for the Motorsport Foundation.
With three passionate rally fans battling it out for the rare opportunity to sit alongside Wilson in his historic Ford Escort Mk2 at this weekend's Greystoke Stages, the winning bid was placed by Dave Nicholson ' a Cumbrian local from Cleator Moor.
The Mk2 Escort is a favourite amongst die-hard rally fans and has enjoyed considerable success in its long and prestigious history. Continuing its predecessor's unbeaten run on the RAC Rally ' winning every year from 1975 to 1979 ' the model claimed victory on a number of events around the world and transported Björn Waldegård and Ari Vatanen to the WRC Drivers' titles in 1979 and 1981 respectively.
Wilson's Escort Mk2 was built in 2008 for the end of season, historic Roger Albert Clark Rally ' an event which Wilson and then co-driver John Millington won with 14 stage victories. On only its third outing, the car was used as the double zero car on this weekend's Greystoke Stages with the lucky auction winner navigating two tests through the forest tracks.
In a twist to the tale, Nicholson forfeited the opportunity to sit alongside the former British Rally Champion in favour of his wife, Tammy, on the occasion of her birthday.
Speaking after the experience, Tammy Nicholson said:
'That was fantastic, and I didn't scream once! The noise of the car was amazing and you don't realise just how fast these guys go until you are actually sitting there. It was such a fantastic opportunity that I will always remember.'

Wigton Youth Station is an established youth provision within a small rural market town in North Allerdale. Their overall aim is to provide every young person with a positive experience of youth, encouraging them to reach their full potential and become valued and active members of their community. They currently deliver a varied range of positive activities to young people aged 11-19yrs who are socially disadvantaged and disengaged from their communities. They are the sole providers who are addressing this need and gap in provision in Wigton. Their inclusive programmes aim to ‘reach’ and ‘engage’ with as many young people locally to encourage participation and demonstrate the benefits of reducing disadvantage.
The Youth Station has been invited by the West Cumbria Motorsport Club to take a group of young people to the P & R Benn Greystoke Stages Rally ,on Sunday 8th July at Greystoke Forest near Penrith, to see what is involved in rallying and what the crews have to do to achieve the thrill of being involved in this form of motorsport. The invitation has been extended as part of the clubs involvement in National Motorsport Week an initiative driven by the sports governing body, the Motor Sports Association (MSA).The young people will be greeted by a representative of the organising team and after a short safety briefing will be invited to walk around the service area, meet some of the crews before going to spectate at a safe vantage point. This particular venue offers an action packed day for all those who participate and without question is a unique opportunity for the young people.
Angela Bicknell, Centre Manager at the Youth Station, said
'Our thanks go to the organisers and competitors of this event for their invitation and we look forward to the day. We are sure when the young people see what is involved it will help with their ambitions and aspirations for the future'.
Roger Fisher, Clerk of the Course for the rally added
' To compete in rallying even at the level that we organise requires the competitors and their support crews to work incredibly hard, put in long hours, show commitment and dedication. We hope that if some of that rubs off on the young folk of Wigton we have contributed a little to their future.'

Following successful charity fund raising at the 2011 Greystoke Stages the organisers will again be supporting a charity at the 2012 P & R Benn Greystoke Stages Rally in July.
As in 2011 the chosen charity is the Motor Neurone Disease Association North West Cumbria branch and volunteers from the association will be marshaling the spectator car park with voluntary contributions sought from those using the car park to swell the charity's funds.
There will also be buckets to accept donations at signing-on and in the service area.

Organisers of the P & R Benn Greystoke Stages, to be held in Greystoke Forest near Penrith, Cumbria, on the 8th July 2012, are determined to provide competitors with first class value for money rallying.
To keep the rally entry fee down as low as possible, to ensure quality facilities and documentation and excellent stages the organising team are most grateful to P & R Benn for their continued backing but have now gained more sponsorship support from local Cumbrian businesses.
Goodfellows Tyres of Cockermouth have pledged their backing for a second year as have Stamper & Co Accountants from Beckfoot near Silloth. High Hill Garage, Keswick will again be supplying the event trophies .
Additional new backing has come from a number of West Cumbrian businesses who will be support sponsors for the rally and to date AS Design Cumbria from Cleator Moor, The Hundith Hill Hotel near Cockermouth, Central Motorcycles of Whitehaven and Mitchell's Mini's of Bigrigg have come on board for the first time.
One of the first ways that this sponsorship will be passed on to the competitors is with the confirmation that the entry fee this year will be kept to just £310 for some of the best quality stages and organisation. Further support will result in there being more new features introduced both before the rally and on the day and more news will follow as this happens. Keep a look out on the event website

The organising team from West Cumbria Motorsport Club are delighted to announce that the 2012 P & R Benn Greystoke Stages Rally will again be running in Greystoke Forest near Penrith, Cumbria on Sunday 8th July 2012.
Event officials are massively grateful for the continued support given to the event by Paul Benn and his Cockermouth based rally preparation business and Paul himself is pleased to be able to give this superb forest single venue rally his backing saying ' This is a great rally for us to support, it's organised by the club I am a member of and at a venue that I know so well and provides competitors with not only a fantastic days rallying but with good company and good craic'.
Following on from the success of the 2011 event Clerk of the Course, Roger Fisher, said ' We will be looking to get maximum stage mileage out of the forest for our entrants and provide them with what we hope will be one of the best value for money forest events in the North West calendar'.
The event will feature approximately 38 stage miles on the good quality Greystoke tracks which are maintained by M Sport without whose assistance the rally could not go ahead. Competitors from up to five northern rally championships are expected to take part so there should be a high demand for entries.
More news and updates will be posted on the event website, www.greystokestages.co.uk and regulations should be available in April to enable crews to submit their entries early to ensure they secure one of the coveted starting slots. In the meantime put the date in your diary and start counting down to Greystoke 2012.
