Strong Entry for ALMC Spring Endurance Trial

Posted: February 13, 2012 3:29 PM

ALMC Motor Club's spring Endurance Trial which takes place on Saturday the 18th February has attracted a strong entry with many of the now regular trial competitors returning to the event along with a number of debutants. The event is based at the Luttrellstown Castle Resort Golf Club in north Co. Dublin with the nearby Luttrellstown estate playing host to a series of trials including the night trial which will round off the event on Saturday evening. The event will feature some of the more popular trial venues from last year and will also include new trial sites in Collon, Slane, Navan and Dunshaughlin with competing crews returning to Luttrellstown later that evening.

Entries for the event are filling up fast with the club expecting to start a maximum of seventy cars on the day. Last year's winner Eamonn Byrne will not take part this year as he is attending an Autotest event in the UK therefore leaving open the opportunity to one of the other hopeful crews. Piers MacFheorais in his Mazda MX5 with Ian McCulloch alongside will return to the event along with Karl O'Donoghue and Padraig Farrell in their Rover 200. Other notable entries include a number of Rallycross regulars Dermot Carneige who has teamed up with Paul Bosdet in a Ford Escort MK1 and George Treacy who with George junior will take to the trials in the ex Noel Devlin left hand drive Skoda Felicia. The Retro crew of Ted and Karen Gaffney have also entered the event in their Volkswagen Golf GTI with Ted's son Glyn joining forces with Alan Dolan to take part in their Toyota Celica. A number of ladies will do battle on the event with circuit racer turned Auto-tester and Endurance Trial regular Patricia Denning fielding her Toyota Starlet with former stages co-driver Joe Downey taking up the navigators seat. Lyndsay Doran fresh from her role as CoC for the New Year multi venue Autotest will take to the wheel of her Toyota Starlet with guidance from Barry Treacy. Noel Devlin CoC of the club stages rally will compete in this year's event having played an important role in the running of last years, he will be joined by stages event secretary Deirdre Gallagher. Photographer and well known historic rally driver Frank Fennell has entered in his Mercedes Benz 220 Seb Coupe, he will be accompanied by retro regular Frank Hussey, while former Billy Coleman award winner Robert Barrable will swap his Skoda S2000 for a Toyota Starlet for the event hoping to build on his success at last years event. The event will start at 11am with scrutiny and drivers briefing taken place prior to the start The crews will then head for the tests with a lunchtime stop scheduled for 1.30 followed by an afternoon packed with tests spread over counties Dublin, Louth and Meath with the crews returning to the tea stop location prior to their run through the night test. The first of the competing cars is due back in Luttrellstown at 8.45pm with results and prize giving scheduled for shortly after 10pm.

ALMC Motor Club will return to Luttrellstown Castle Resort Golf Club on Saturday the 18th February for the now annual spring Endurance Trial. Following the success of the event last year and the growing popularity of Endurance Trials in Ireland ALMC will once again kick off the Endurance Trial calendar with a challenging and interesting event for competitors. The event will visit some of the more difficult tests which featured in last year’s Trial while visiting a number of new locations with the event ending in a run through the Luttrellstown Castle test which will be the longest of the day under the cover of darkness. Clerk of the Course for the event is Raymond Scullion who will for the first time take on the responsibility for the event, "this year’s event will be even bigger and better than last years and while there will be some of last year’s tests included they will all have some subtle changes so that last year’s crews don't have any significant advantage. We will also be running new locations around Collon, Slane, Navan and Dunshaughlin and of course the night test in Luttrellstown, which I believe will play a significant part in deciding the overall winner of the event" commented Ray.

The event will start from Luttrellstown golf club at 11am with scrutiny and drivers briefing taken place prior to the start also at the club. The crews will then head for the tests with a lunchtime stop scheduled for 1.30 followed by an afternoon packed with tests spread over counties Dublin, Louth and Meath with the crews returning to the tea stop location prior to their run through the night test. The first of the competing cars is due back in Luttrellstown at 8.45pm with results and prize giving scheduled for shortly after 10pm.

Entries are now open for the event and will close on the 9th February, with the number of entries restricted to 70 competing cars it is likely a reserve list will be created long before the closing date, similar to the two ALMC Endurance Trials last year. The entry fee is just €185 which includes standard rate IRDS/BRDS insurance and a €30 crew personal accident insurance; the club are offering a discount of €7 for entries from competitors aged 16 or 17. Cars from classes 1 to 5 are eligible for the event which range from navigation trial cars up to 2000cc to front and rear wheel drive retro type cars, with the overall winner being decided from class 1.

"The popularity of Endurance Trial events has really grown in the past twelve months and based on the number of entries we have already received we will most certainly run the maximum number of cars. I would encourage anyone who has not experienced Endurance Trials and is interested in getting involved to come along and help out on the event where they will get the opportunity to experience the event while learning about this low cost form of Motorsport" said CoC Raymond Scullion at the recent launch of the event.

Full regulations and details of the event are available on the ALMC Motor Club website

Plans are well underway for the first ALMC Endurance Event of 2012. Once again the event returns to Luttrellstown Golf Club as HQ and will tackle the 9.5KM "loose and slippy" selective a number of times, the final run (which has a killer twist!) will be over it in the Dark.
