Round 6 - 2011 Midlands East Rally Championship
Posted: October 17, 2011 12:41 PM
While Danny Barry and Gordon Noble were victorious in the 2011 Germaines of Baltinglass Mini Stages Rally in their Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 10, their advantage of almost two minutes at the finish did not reflect the close battles they fought throughout the event to secure the win. They were joint fastest on the first stage, Spinnan's Hill, with Roy White and Martin Brady in the MG S2000 Sport, but the latter crew then retired a short distance into stage two, Grangecon, with a blown engine.
That left James Stafford and Amy Ryan in their Darrian T90 as the closest challengers to Barry and Noble, nineteen seconds down after the opening loop. Tommy Doyle and Liam Monaghan were third in their Renault Clio R3, a further 22 seconds in arrears, and four ahead of Thomas Fitzmaurice and Fionn Foley (Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 9).
The second loop over the same stages saw Stafford narrow the gap to Barry to just seven seconds, the smooth Grangecon test well suited to his low-slung Darrian. Fitzmaurice moved ahead of Doyle, but only by one second.
Stage five saw Barry add a further second to his advantage, leaving Stafford eight behind going into the last. Stafford's challenge ended a couple of kilometres into that final test, when the Darrian's clutch failed, leaving Barry home free. For the Enniskerry man, this success marks his second Baltinglass win in a row, having also taken victory when the event was last run, in 2009. With Stafford failing to finish, Fitzmaurice claimed second place. The challenge from Doyle ended on the penultimate stage when he put his Clio R3 off the road.
Trevor Culbert benefited from the retirements ahead to climb to third place in his Ford Escort RS, he and co-driver, Ray Fitzpatrick finishing as the top two wheel drive crew.
Paddy O'Dwyer and David Byrne from Wexford took fourth place in their 1600cc Vauxhall Nova, with the fellow Nova crew of Mark Kennedy and Ian O'Leary, also from Wexford, rounding out the top five.

The Garda Síochána Motor Club has attracted a strong and varied entry for its Germaines of Baltinglass-supported Mini Stages Rally, which will take place this Sunday (October 16th). The interest in the 2011 event is in stark contrast to last year, when the rally had to be cancelled due to lack of entries. The resurgence of the GSMC Rally can be attributed, certainly in part, to the expansion of the Mini Stages format from four to six stages, with the extra competitive mileage being provided for a reduced, rather than increased, entry fee.
Over 100 crews will take part in the Garda Rally, and the top competitors will be in action in a wide variety of machinery it is Danny Barry, the winner of this event in 2009, who is the top seed in his Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 10. The Enniskerry man will be co-driven on this occasion by the experienced Gordon Noble, from Omagh, who served as Clerk of the Course for the most recent running of the Rally Ireland WRC round. For Barry, the GSMC Mini Stages serves as his 'home' rally, and will require considerably less travelling time than the Monte Carlo Rally, the Canary Islands Rally or Rallye San Remo in Italy, just some of the far-flung events he has contested over the past couple of years.
Former Irish Tarmac Group N Champion, Roy White, is the number two seed in his unique Ford Duratec-engined MG S2000 Sport. The MG started out as a manufacturer-backed machine, but the famous British marque later ran into financial difficulties and support for motorsport programmes dried up. The original engine proved problematic, so White chose to convert the S2000 car to Ford power, and returned to competitive action at the Raven's Rock Rally last July after a three year sabbatical. Clonmel man White will be co-driven by Martin Brady.
Number three seed, James Stafford, from Wellingtonbridge, Co. Wexford, is also a past winner of the GSMC Mini Stages, and he will be navigated in his Darrian by Mary Ryan. Renault Clio R3 pilot, Tommy Doyle, seeded at No. 4, is another driver who has competed throughout Europe over the past couple of years. The Longford man finished third in this year's Rally Northern Ireland, and has been selected as a finalist in the Pirelli Star Driver shoot-out. He also won the 2011 Rally New York, in a Mitsubishi Lancer.
The remainder of the top ten includes drivers from all over Ireland, such as Group N frontrunner Thomas Fitzmaurice (Kerry); Mark Courtney (Meath), who has led the GSMC Mini Stages in the past; David Condell (Carlow), the winner of the Heartlands Mini Stages in Laois earlier this year and Damien McCarthy (Cork), victor of the recent Imokilly Rallysprint.
The Germaines of Baltinglass GSMC Mini Stages Rally 2011 will consist of three loops of the Spinnan's Hill and Grangecon Stages. The rally will get under way at 10:16am on Sunday morning when first car leaves Parc Fermé at Scoil Chonglais. A twenty minute service will be permitted before the first stage commences at 11.00am. There will be further Services, located at Whitestown Quarry in Baltinglass, after stages two and four. The winning crew will arrive to the Finish on the Main Street in Baltinglass at 5.00pm.
The Germaines of Baltinglass Mini Stages Rally 2011 marks the final round of the Loughran Signs Midlands East Rally Championship. The Midlands East title will be decided between Vincent Collins, who has 58 points, followed by Pat Bellew on 56, Mark Nangle on 53 and Barry Mahon, 51.

Enniskerry’s Danny Barry, the winner of the Garda Síochána Motor Club’s Mini Stages Rally on the last occasion it was held, in 2009, has confirmed that he will take part in the 2011 running of Baltinglass event, on October 16th. Barry, who had rallied extensively across Europe over the past couple of years, will make his bid for a second Baltinglass victory in the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 10 which he debuted on the recent Wexford Rally. There, he was fastest on two stages and challenged for a podium position before a mechanical problem confined him to fourth place in the final reckoning.
The Clerk of the Course for the Germaine’s Hotel backed GSMC Mini Stages Rally, Pat Lordan, reports that interest in the event is strong among competitors.
“I spoke to many crews at the Wexford Rally, and a good number indicated that they hoped to take part in Baltinglass, subject to their cars finishing Wexford intact. There was even some interest from the Welsh contingent, and they were going to look at the suitability of ferry crossings. We have received fifty entries so far, and I am asking other competitors who wish to take part in the Garda Rally to get their entries in as early as possible.”
The GSMC has also announced that the deadline for accepting entries at the early rate of €365 has been extended until Thursday next, September 22nd. Thereafter, the Entry Fee will be €399.
Regulations and Entry Forms for the Germaines of Baltinglass GSMC Mini Stages Rally 2011 are available to download from the club’s website, gardamotorclub.com, and also on rally.ie.
The Germaines of Baltinglass Mini Stages Rally 2011 marks the final round of the Loughran Signs Midlands East Rally Championship. A four-way battle for the title will be decided on the GSMC event, with Vincent Collins in his Class 12 Ford Escort RS leading the standings on 58 points, closely followed by Pat Bellew on 56, Mark Nangle, 53 and Barry Mahon, 51.

The Germaines of Baltinglass Mini Stages Rally, promoted by the Garda Siochana Motor Club, is set to return to the Irish motorsport calendar on Sunday, the 16th of October, 2011, and the organisers are implementing a number of new measures to enhance the event, both from a competitive element and in the way of practical assistance to those who choose to take part.
The GSMC Mini Stages Rally will consist of six stages in the Baltinglass area, totalling approximately 120kms, in the format of two stages run three times. The planned route features particularly low road kilometres. Previously, organisers of Mini Stages rallies were allowed to run only four stages, but Motorsport Ireland has latterly permitted that such events may be extended to six stages.
The Garda Siochana Motor Club is providing a financial incentive to crews to get their entries in early - those who submit their entries by September 5th will charged a reduced Entry Fee of €365; thereafter the fee will be €399. The organisers have also addressed an issue in relation to Reconnaissance Sign-On, which competitors have raised.
GSMC Mini Stages Rally Clerk of the Course, Pat Lordan, explains:
“This year, the Reconnaissance Sign-on times on Saturday morning will be extended to facilitate crews travelling from other parts of the country. Sign-On for crews from Wicklow and surrounding counties will be between 9:00am and 10:30am. The Signing-On for crews from other counties will be between 11:00am and 12:00 mid-day. This will facilitate those who are travelling some distance, so that they do not have a very early start on Saturday morning and will still have plenty of time after signing-on to get in their three recce runs over the two stages.”
Regulations and Entry Forms for the Germaines of Baltinglass GSMC Mini Stages Rally 2011 will be posted on the club’s website, gardamotorclub.com, and also on motorsportireland.com, rally.ie and elsewhere online.
The Germaines of Baltinglass Mini Stages Rally 2011 will be the final round of the Loughran Signs Midlands East Rally Championship, which is currently led by the Class 4 crew of Mark Nangle and Nollaig Breen.
